  1. That will be John Dewey's education system at work. Thanks John
  2. Although I use cams,I find they are no replacement for live observation of patterns and movement. Cams for me simply supplement or confirm what I see with my peepers. Randomly dotting cams about the place invariably results in inconsistent pics and information.
  3. So I just spent a little while on shot simulator recreating the angle on last Monday's Buck that ran a half mile after I bumped him. I even slightly exaggerated how high and far back the entry wound is, and yet it is telling me I double lunged the beast. Baffling.
  4. To the coffee drinkers...is there no concern about the smell tipping off mature Bucks?
  5. I've managed to get things down to a minimum. I use the small knight n hale rattle. It is compact and weighs nothing. Not like the old stick rattle bag. My heat seat clicks onto the front of my pack while walking, so no need to carry that. In my pack is t-paper, knife, maybe a spare hat if I get rained on, and headlamp, spare batteries. Everything else fits into coat pockets. If going to the Big woods, I will add compass and general survival gear.
  6. Found a rather big deer bed right under my late season snow stand. It is the closest to the house. Last night, after I got grainy video of what seems to be Big Boy, a 6 yr old 10 pointer I was chasing the last 3 or so seasons, I decided to go check one of his traditional rub zones today. It was barren all season. I figured he was gone. Well...I found one 5 inch diameter hemlock which fresh rub scrape marks on it. He has rubbed up a bunch of Hemlocks in the past. I think he might still be in the running. Gonna put a camera by the bed and see what turns up. This is an exciting development. I have a feeling old age is catching up on him and he has reduced his range.
  7. How far in each direction did you look from the last puddle? Did there appear to be a trail of disturbance in the leaf litter going in any direction? Do you know if there is water or lower ground in the area?
  8. John Eberhart talks about the fact that some plots of medium size, say 40 acres, may only have 1 corner where regular action occurs, due to food and bedding locations. It can take a while to zero on on such areas. We have had surrounding house construction in recent times. This has also dramatically effected patterns.
  9. Just as with property investment, it is all about location location location
  10. It's quite normal, even on private plots made up of timber. If you have field/farm access, I would expect more sightings. I have had just one Buck sighting from stand this year, even though deer are around. I have seen doe just twice. Weird year.
  11. You could have mail and pizza delivered to that location
  12. Ya think this guy found my camera? I placed this close to where my Bow Buck entered the property last Monday morning. In one night I have 3 different Bucks coming and going, night n day shots. This leads into the neighbors, who clear-cut a couple of seasons ago and basically made a deer haven. I have a stand I need to now immediately move. I just found a honey-hole.
  13. I get stone cold killer-like. Same if I ever get into a street fight, which used to be a lot for some reason. I don't get the jitters. Not much help, I know, but I turn into a hunting computer machine. It was the same for my first ever deer. I should have been in special forces.
  14. Tagged out for Bow Bucks, but I will be doing some light scouting and trespasser patrol this morning...after coffee...maybe two
  15. So I just moved some cams into the Buck Kill zone area from Monday, and pulled a couple on the way back to the house. The poor quality night shot is by a scrape I discovered last week. This is from Nov 1 . I dare not hope to think it may be Big Boy, the 6 yr old 10 pointer. Hard to tell. but from the back, in the video, the rack looks to be the same shape as his. I will keep close tabs on this camera. The community scrape in the Kill Zone is getting a lot of traffic it seems, but I had pulled the camera, and so just now put it back. The smaller deer is from my neighbors. This appears to be the only Buck in their woods:
  16. Just saw a nice 8 point on his feet under the 219 going South of Buffalo, near the entrance to the 90.
  17. I am waiting for gun now at this point. I have a camera at my neighbors, couple of miles away to check after a couple of weeks there. Be interesting to see if any deer turned up at all. I will be moving my stand to better cover the access from a neighboring clear cut zone with heavy cover, where all the Big Bucks hide out in.
  18. Well...the Buck I shot last Monday was chasing and bellowing after a mature doe. Only the second time I have personally observed mature Buck rut activity. It was pretty awesome.
  19. My bow is set for 25 yards. I shot my Buck at 35 from about 16 feet. I aimed as I would for a target on the ground at 25 yards and In fact hit a tiny bit higher than desired. I was surprised by that, but at 35 yards from 16 feet the angle was pretty flat.
  20. That's how it was for me. I had settled on a weird 2 pronged freak as my deer of choice. It all changed in a matter of minutes one cool morning.
  21. I'll be honest, I do not wear a back tag most of the time. If only because I have no intention of punching rain holes in my gear. I carry mine in a breast pocket usually. But smoking and wielding an implement at the same time does seem to detract from the seriousness of the pursuit, irrespective of what he may be after. Maybe he was just building muscle for a future season, hefting the bow about for an afternoon?
