  1. Holy Chit!!!! You do really want a "track" driver <<<<a play on your title. You need a bulldozer to carry that around. Just like a self propelled howitzer. My 375 all up AND my 270 win with a red dot( but no ammo) weigh that much...... TOGETHER! LOL Anyways, as a lefty you are a touch limited to some choices in a bolt gun. But common calibers are availible in several makes; Rem/Savage/Ruger et al. Put a 3-9x40 or 50 on top for a couple hundred.........go kill stuff.
  2. Thats pretty damn cool Elmer. I had a Leica spotter 62mm APO here for a few weeks once upon a time. Planned on using them to digiscope pics on a trip. But I didn't get the adapter in time and the spotter didn't come along in the end; and they went back to the demo bin at a optics dealer. I wish i could justify owning one, or Lieca rangfinding bino's. Good stuff.
  3. You just wanted to show off them spiffy Swaro binoculars with that picture. I have a Nikon 660 that works pretty good. After about 400 yds you need a hard target for them to work good; but anything shorter is ok.
  4. Yep.....them Swede's in the Norma factory have magic pixie dust to splinkle on WBY ammo.
  5. I love this quote, if it doesn't fit perfect in this thread right now; "Those who fail to understand the elementary physics of ballistics often misinterpret the configuration of barrel and the line of sight and assume that something "special" happens to the bullet during its flight."
  6. Oh.boy.....where to start with that mess. Do some basic reading...... http://www.chuckhawks.com/bullet_trajectory.htm Go to any other ammo company.....they provide the choice of zero; usually 100 or 200 yd zero. It has EVERYTHING to do with it.
  7. Thats a 300 yd zero on the chart. Most use 200 or 100. Apples to oranges.
  8. Not sure either where who's contracting the mark v's...... Back to the OP's questions...... 300 yds is realistic for most cartridges to shoot well without beating you up or costing you a ton for ammo. As to what to pick? If you are going to hunt it on the carry, I like to avoid a heavy wall barrel (stuff labelled like varmint/police/sniper) at the end of the day a 10 lb gun makes your arms feel like they are dragging the ground. Handle a few, see how they feel in hand. Much of this is subjective for the individual shooter; most modern medium priced guns all shoot great.
  9. Cause its just easier to have HOWA 1500's labelled for them? LOL. Had a German Weatherby that was not a pimp gun; tupperware stock double set triggers, claw mount Swaro in 300WBY......was a hell of a shooter, and not all that bad to look at. Traded it off. I have a 300WBY barrel for one of my Blasers now......lots of 270WBY happy owners out there. Fun cartridges, fast and flat. But not what I'd start out with for this OP. Buy a Remmy, 270Win,308,3006,7/08 etc, and remember to save up a little to get a decent scope on top in some good rings. Go kill stuff.....
  10. Actually Canada repealed its long gun registry. Just sayin'
  11. Does that bring back memories..... Can't believe that is still running.
  12. Welcome to the board. Always good to have another tree rat assassin around.
  13. Dang, you ever handled any of Lawdwazs', or some of mine, you'd think they were feathers in hand.
  14. You have to start factoring in stock design and gun fit....... A friends 270 lb twenty year old thinks my 9+ lb 375 is some kind of cannon. But I shoot it well (at 145); because the stock is custom for me. He has to press the stock really hard to get a good sight picture and the length of pull too long for his bulk. I shoot lighter than average guns and for prctice or bench work I have removable breaks and one has a screw in recoil reducer at 13 ozs that takes about 5 minutes to change. A good crisp and light trigger also helps. Having to keep squeezing, anticipating that a shot will go off, its poor for accuracy also. In the field when shooting I don't even think of the recoil in a shot.
  15. Looks like they are limiting to 200 permits for shotgun according to here; http://nysparks.com/parks/133/hours-of-operation.aspx If you go to DEP website; they are closing 2 areas to gun and making them bow only. IIRC those are both down that way. Maybe another option. Wonder how their deers numbers are doing? Must be looking to take a few more with adding a gun permit. You ever apply to hunt at Olana on that deer herd reduction program?
  16. Well done on the training and pics! Cool stuff.
  17. My dad is making a spread sheet of the cost factors in buying 120 bricks right now.......you know the benefit ratio of purchase price vs delivery or multiple trips of picking them up. Good at making a months analysis for 2 days work. I have a bunch of jobs going here anyway; I absolutely have to get back to Africa next year......and tying into this thread..... I'm sick of working to pay frickin' taxes and insurance. Sell some stuff and come along.
  18. Don't want those folks upstate to feel left out..... Orleans county is a perennial leader for taxes paid vs. home values. GO NY TAXES.....YIPEE!
  19. 'Other than waterfowl as required; why would you shoot steel on turkey or small game?
  20. I shoot an 870 with a Improved (IC) and several slugs do as good as needed for under 100 yd shots.....but are better for under 75........Brenneke slugs are very good. Sometimes you have to experiment a little; smoothbore slug guns often have their own sweet spot for load and choke. Another option is a rifled choke; you can use both conicals and sabots in these. Your smoothbore will not do well with sabots.
  21. Wow.....thats totally unacceptable in this day and age. I would be pissed. JMO Honest I have never heard or seen all that great of work from Pepi. YMMV
