UpStateRedNeck replied to wolc123's topic in CrossBow Hunting
Very much looking forward to this. Going to be a loooooooong wait this week. -
Down at the waterfall crossing pinch point, 600 feet up, or 400 feet down from the nearest access. Damn stream is LOUD.

Congrats! It's a damn good feeling when you find one. All that anxiety when you're tracking just lifts!

How much did you spend this year preparing for the season?
UpStateRedNeck replied to Core's topic in General Hunting
Gotta be over 4 grand. 2 crossbows, new pants, pack, property taxes, and a forestor to mark 3000 or so trees on my hillside property. Oh and another ladder stand. -
Helluva lot of deer in the fields on the drive up in 4H. Spooked a doe in the field a few hundred yards from my stand on the way in. Gonna sit til noon.

My wife thinks i have some sort of problem. Dunno what she's talking about.

Full camo, I wear orange while moving during gun season. I find I see alot of cool non-deer related stuff when sitting in full camo. Owls, hawks, foxes, and most recently, ALOT of bear. I do agree that camo for deer isn't that essential, slow smooth movement does way more.

She's constantly running around in my best hunting area. I really doubt it's helping. And ewwwwww IPA'S.

Kicked up a fat doe on the walk in, looked like she was headed from some pines up top down the side of the hill. Hoping this wind lays down a bit in the next hour......

17, missed leg hair and went long on liver
-
Yeah, saw that today. Made me quite sad. Taking tomorrow off, and I'll do Sunday. If things aren't picking up by Sunday I might wait another week before taking another day.
-
Are you going in at first light? If so maybe wait an hour or two. Does not apply to chase/rut activity.

CENTERPOINT SNIPER 370 CROSSBOW REVIEW
UpStateRedNeck replied to TheFieldArcher's topic in CrossBow Hunting
Yeah stock scope. If it had a crosshair for 60 I'd feel comfortable taking that shot, after goofing around it was around a 14 inch drop 50 to 60 but still consistent. -
CENTERPOINT SNIPER 370 CROSSBOW REVIEW
UpStateRedNeck replied to TheFieldArcher's topic in CrossBow Hunting
I took the dive on 2 of these (one for my dad) this year! Went with the black eagle executioner bolts and rage 2 blades. I must say I'm impressed, once they got dialed in they are tack drivers. Cost about 900 to set up 2 of them, including a target to keep at the cabin for unloading. I'd be really curious to see how the trigger replacement goes, damn thing is creepy. This picture is at 50 from a sandbag bench rest. -
Every time I look it changes. Noreasters offer a unique wind to hunt out of, and the deer always come out to feed hard when one rolls in...... and I have to take my kids to a stupid halloween parry at my yuppy friends house. Oh well, here's hoping they'll be running around on Sunday.

Is losing deer an inevitable occurrence?
UpStateRedNeck replied to zeus1gdsm's topic in Deer Hunting
Biggest buck I've seen in the flesh, drop tine, real slob. Shoulder shot with bow. Arrow never came out, tracked til 11 pm, then brought in a dog the next day. 3 miles, no deer. Saw beds all season that had rusty blood in them on that shoulder. Still feels shitty. -
Who carries a handgun while hunting?
UpStateRedNeck replied to pitweiler's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
On the way in last night I saw a state trooper car at the farmhouse, so I stopped to see what the hubbub was. I guess our neighbors had their trail cameras all stolen and the officer was talking to my aunt and uncle by marriage. I mentioned I was on my way out to the stand (pretty obvious in full camo) and had my 10 mil on my hip. Dude didn't say a word. I get that it's technically a fine, but like many things they just have better things to do. I do think an encon officer would probably ticket me. I just think it's worth the price if I get caught. I feel alot better in pitch black walking a mile through bear territory back to the quad. To each their own! -
I'm seeing 3 inches of snow Saturday and another inch on Sunday! Couple that with the full moon, the first cold October we've had in..... God knows how long. Must..... get.... in.... woods..... According to the lunar calendar, which I don't really subscribe to, and will the chase be on?

Real windy up top, sitting on a minor ravines crossing down off the top of the hill, out of the wind. Kinda.

Who carries a handgun while hunting?

Sig Sauer P220 10mm Hunter. 180 gr sig v crown. Too many bears and only 1 of me. -
Another frigging black bear last night, stopped 15 yards downwind, sniffed the air, and slowly looked up at me. Then it started creeping forward! Its possible I showed it a sig sauer and asked it if it really, really wanted to do that. It decided to amble off, but at no point did it act like it had any reason to be afraid of people. This one was full grown, I'm guessing a female around 200 pounds? It's a little mind blowing how many of them seem to be around.
