I've messed around with the ammo quite a bit. I've had the gun for for 3 years now, and I've put probably 3 or 4 hundred rounds through it. It likes the Winchester X 150 grains the best. It despises the Hornady's for some reason. I shoot decent groups when I rest my left hand, but unless I'm concentrating on holding the barrel really firm with my left, the high poundage and long pull on the trigger (yes I know to squeeze not jerk) moves it down and right. I shoot much better with a light trigger. I need to test it, but I think it's at least 6 lbs, probably closer to 8. I've also heard that the 700s respond really well to hand loaded rounds, anybody have experience with this?

I'll tell you what I did shoot, (and loved) was a bushmaster 450 this past weekend. The dude had put alot of time into it, trigger was perfect. Was making cans dance like at 100 yards. Well, it was making them dance once or twice before they disintegrated. But I was definitely not pleased with my groups at 100 with my 308. Thought it was just me until I picked up that thumper and started destroying things. Kick wasn't that bad either, but I could feel the entire rifle compact on itself each time I shot.

I have heard (ala F&S) that the trigger is mushy on the scout. And for the money they are asking for it, I'll concede your point Steve. I guess the light weight? As a dude carrying around 240 lbs, plus usually 20 lbs of gear, an extra lb or two is un-noticeable. I like the idea of the ring sight in the back, it was more of a very intrigued drool factor.

#1) Heck yeah, let me know how it is. I'm particularly curious about those aperture sights for brush. #2) I was going to get a Marlin XL7 for my deer gun because Schohaire went rifle the year before, but I saw the 700 with a Vx-2 already on it for under 600$, very very slightly used and couldn't pass it up.

I can compensate for the "right pull" by holding her real tight with my left hand, but it goes against everything I've been taught about shooting, and I hate it. Also Elmo, in that other topic about Dick's you spoke of the Ruger Scout. Drool factor 9/10. I'm regretting the 700 purchase a little bit after my buddy this year got a Weatherby 308 sub MoA with a VX-2 scope all set up for under 800 bucks. Makes my heart throb when I look at it.

Not an unlikely outcome! I should probably measure my finger travel sometime.

I did some internet searching, and theres a few people around who say Remington's been putting in their triggers in with alot of poundage, and alot of travel lately for law suit prevention. And also been using cheaper parts.

Any of you fellas ever lighten the poundage on a model 700? I'm hoping that the 700 (about 4 or 5 years old) has an adjustable trigger on it. After shooting a bunch of different rifles this weekend, I've come to the conclusion that my trigger is set to probably 6lbs +. I'd love it to be around 3.5 lbs.

Never had to cut a throat, but I've seen the knife in the heart, and it sounds like that is the most effective way to end their misery. I have been very fortunate, for the past 13 years and haven't had a messy kill since I was 18. I remember, very poignantly, the look a doe gave me right before I gave her a 12 gauge round to the cranium (and made a huge mess out of my hunting clothes). I imagine most of us have seen at some point. "Why the %^&* did you do this to me?" Look. Hated it. I still hunt, and while I'm a little de-sensitized to it, I think it gives us as hunters a higher appreciation for life, and our oppurtunity to live it. Even the big buck kills where I'm absolutely AMPED about my success, I always feel a little sad. I can tell you if I catch up with the big boy I've been dogging for 3 years now, and take him, I'll probably sit down next to him and feel pretty sad that I'll never see his big self cruising through the woods we've shared for at least 4 or 5 years now.

My scare came when I was like 14, hunting Turkey alone with old mossberg. I had it idly pointed at a hillside to my left and then just idly pulled the trigger (thinking in my head that the safety was ON and there wasn't one in the tube) BLAM. Excuse I'm looking for Ray Finkle................... and a clean pair of shorts.

2 years ago I had a great snowy owl land about 20 feet from me. She did a full 180 with her head a couple times which was fun to see. After a bout 20 minutes of watching her I waved, at which poing her eyes from ()v() to OvO before flying away about 100 feet, and higher up, and then spent 5 mintues pacing back and forth trying to figure out what the eff I was. That's the sort of thing you see when you can wear full camo in bow season without fear of being plugged by an idiot.

On days where it's cold, and I'm going in for a looooooooong sit (like tomorrow), I bring a thermos of coffee, and a thermos of chicken soup. It makes a huge difference in the long haul for how comfortable you are. Just be ready to let fly from your stand about once every 20 minutes!

Leupold VX-2. Sight it in, never touch it again, good night nurse. Also will gather light like CRAZY early in the morning and late in the evening, and will be able to make out details at hundreds of yards WAY before your eyes and/or binocs will.

Wouldn't be surprised if it was them. They knew they got caught and came back to take the evidence more than likely.

Gawd they are rutting hard right now. I regret taking the previous week off instead of this past week. I'll post the pictures later, but man they are in every single night in the new spot I found. I have like 100 videos too. Including one of that big 9 coming right up to and snuffing the camera. How does everybody post videos here?

With the bow..... if I can see the pins and my peep, then it's pretty light out. Alot more cautious with firearms though. Fortunately my Leupold VX-2 is about 3 times better than my binoculars for counting antler points in the 1/2 light, and about 8 times better than my eyes. Definitely always wait until colors are pronounced, but I've never had a shot at first light anyway.

What in the.......... that particular animal should probably be eliminated from the genetic pool.

Opening day, my .308 and watching a big patch of field and woods. After that I will probably be coming the side of the hill dragging the Mossberg around. I will take that gun in the woods every single day of the week over a rifle with a scope. It's a murdering machine under 100 yards.

yeah you're probably right, I was 17 so I might not be remembering accurately. Maybe it was a partial? He was dropping pieces of guts and skin, I remember that much. I just kept dogging him, and he eventually just dropped, conveniently much closer to a logging road than where ishot him.

Been hunting whitetails for 15 years, and I have never lost a deer. I've clean missed some! But never lost. My first big buck I hit with a 12 gauge right across the gut, severing his femural artery and proceeded to chase him for 3 hours until he bled out, without letting him lay down and die. Not too smart, but effective.

Taken 2 Does, had one shot at a 6 point early in the season. Seen lots of deer though, they are still apple crazy.
