  1. I'll be hunting with the bow this evening. I don't have plans to hunt with the gun until the end of the month. Good luck to everyone that will be out for the opener today!
  2. Single digits here. Supposed to get up to 15 this afternoon with the winds subsiding finally. Got some nice videos from my cam last night. I'll be in my blind this afternoon.
  3. 26 hours of plowing. I'm done. I officially hate snow now.
  4. This thread title should be changed to the Alden Reunion Thread.
  5. It just goes to show you that even even on a windy nasty day, they still have to feed. And it's usually somewhere out of the wind whether it's in a hollow, behind a house, or anywhere that there is a lee.
  6. Here's a vid from Staten Island today during the storm.
  7. I don't think so. It'll be windy and cold for the next 2 days and when it opens on Sunday, they're going to be very hungry and easy to track. Not to mention probably herded up pretty good. Aside from having to trudge thru the snow,, I think it's going to be a pretty good first week.
  8. We have plenty of heavy equipment with some big plows to get it done down here. I've been going since 6am. This pic is one of the harder spots to keep clean. There is open a farm field on the left and the wind whips in right off the sound causing some pretty big drifts in the road. Once the snow stops, the town clears this spot with a giant truck mounted snow thrower. This pic was taken at about 1:45 this afternoon. I was not plowing this road, but just using it as a turn around for an adjacent road.
  9. I saw the big mike at dicks but I went with the Ameristep because it was a bit smaller. I didn't want it to stand out too much.
  10. No problem. I had a feeling it wasn't going to work. I had to put a fresh set of batteries in my cam anyway and I doubt I would have been able to find any clothes pins out here today with the holiday.
  11. You're right. It didn't work. Way too cold. I'll pick up some clips this week. I probably won't put them on until I hunt it again. Thanks for the tip.
  12. Ok. No problem. Just figured that I'd throw it out there. Maybe there's a member that can help you out. Good luck.
  13. I'm not sure how the ducks are right now as a lot of the backwaters are freezing over, but they are doing a number on the geese right now. Call Steve from Elite Outfitters if you don't get any offers.
  14. They did find a leak, but I don't think that's why you need to check your deer in from those locations. The groundwater runs south and Brookhaven State Park is north of there. Wildwood is several miles NE of the lab. I'm pretty sure that the biologists age and weigh the deer to determine the condition of the herd. I'm not sure but I think all deer taken on state land must be checked in during archery. During gun season, the defineatly need to be checked in from all state land.
  15. It could have been a lot worse. At least you were home and noticed that the heat went out. I've seen it where people leave town for the weekend and come home to a real mess. At those temps and some wind, it won't take long to start freezing pipes in your house. Glad that you got it all worked out.
  16. I think what I'll end up doing is duct taping the windows shut on the inside for now. I'm sure that the cold temperatures have increased the noise of the fabric. I'll probably only hunt out of it 1 or 2 more times this year, so I'd just rather leave it up for now as time is running out before they start dropping their horns. Hopefully they get used to it being there before too long. Since this was my first blind purchase and kind of spur of the moment, I really didn't know what to look for or have much to choose from. At least it wasn't too much $$. I'll look into some other blinds at some point during the off season. I'd really like to get another one that is more suitable and quiet during the late season. Thanks for the replies and Happy New Year!
  17. What kind and model is it? Was the fabric still silent?
  18. Does anyone have first hand experience using their pop up blind in extreme temps like 15* and colder?
  19. Would the Ameristep with the silent windows be The Crush blind? I couldn't find any info on the type of material used on that one.
  20. I read some reviews of the Primos and it said they were noisy. The Ameristep Caretaker that I bought has a Durashell fabric. Will this fabric be less noisy in warmer temperatures? I guess I can bring it home and thaw it out, but I'd rather not. I'd rather leave it be for a week and let them get used to it. But if it's going to be noisy even during the early season, I'll just order something with a different fabric.
  21. What brand of pop up blinds is everyone using, and is the material quiet in extreme cold weather? I just bought my first blind. It's an Ameristep blind. I hunted out of it tonight and the temperature was 12*. The fabric seemed very noisy in the wind. I secured all of the windows that weren't being used, but they still seemed to flap. I was very close to a bedding thicket and I know that they heard it. It sound like a tarp flapping in the wind. Im just curious if I should return it and get a better quality blind, or is this normal for the extreme conditions?
  22. I didn't see the big one tonight, but I did see 6 does and a very nice 8. Even though I tucked the ground blind into the thicket and brushed it in, a few did know that something was out of place. I was also less than pleased about the noise that came from the window flaps in the wind. It is an Ameristep blind and I did secure every window but they still made noise. Are they always noisy or was it from the extreme cold? I know that the deer heard it in the thicket, as they were not downwind. I'll leave the blind in place for now and let them get used to it. I probably won't get out again until next weekend.
  23. Maybe because they are both state parks. Other than that, I have no idea. I don't hunt any state land.
  24. So I got plenty of pics between last night and this morning at my new spot. I stopped by there to reevaluate the situation on where to set up. There is no place to hang a stand, so I ran to Dicks and bought a ground blind. I set it up and brushed it in. Normally I would be very concerned about scent from a new blind, but where it's set up with a good NW wind, I'll be in good shape. We'll see how it goes tonight.
  25. I do as well. I just moved one to a new spot last night and got a parade of bucks and does all night long. I'll be on stand there this afternoon. I really love these new cell cams. Hopefully my new cam that sends video shows up from Phade this week.
