How could you be positive before the buck turned it's head? Without seeing both sides you can't be positive... so the DEC is making hunters look a little longer at a buck before killing it... that is making responsible hunters out of hunters with itchy trigger fingers... the poacher comes from the hunters lack of responsibility, not the law. The law is very clear! Maybe it will create more responsible hunters out of all those irresponsible hunters you keep saying are taking over the woods. And, you know that I'm not talking about the deer you didn't shoot, I'm talking about the ones that get shot because the hunter didn't take the time to "positively" indentify his target.. that is not a mistake or an accident.

More like ridiculous!! lets see.. 8000 youths hunting on youth day.. and 1 million deer... I didn't hear, but is the bag limit that day 100 deer per hunter? -
Like any food.. preparation is key.. cooked properly bear meat is excellent... but there is a difference between a dump bear and a bear that feeds on natural foods. They definitely are what they eat.

Sensible like creating a law that bans jumbo soft drinks... LMAO... YEP.. thats time well spent on the important things.. you really have to start reading your posts before you click the post button... maybe he should ban only the soft drinks that hold a gun to those helpless individuals head and force themselves down their helpless throats.. those bastard soft drinks!!! Something really needed to be done about them.... I mean .. there isn't anything else happening in the city that can be as important as a pushy jumbo soft drink... you can't even walk by a convenient store without one trying to jump off the shelf into your mouth. -

I didn't read any of that.. sounds a little like grade school to me.
-
I didn't read anything that said he thought he was better than you... you're the only one that says he is better... sounds like you want everyone to have your attitude about hunting... you want him to give you slack about the way you hunt, but you aren't willing to give him the same slack for the way he sees hunting... I don't recall him resorting to calling anyone a jackass either... No more arrogant than your posts sound or Doewhackers posts, or any of our posts for that matter.. just another strong opinion. One that I don't entirely agree with.. but still his opinion...
-
I agree.. it isn't easy when your moving through dense cover.. thats where responsiblity come into play... you don't know if it's legal until you have identified it as such... shooting at an animal that you are not positive of is not a mistake.. that's the only point I'm making. My point is that no hunter kills an animal by mistake... they kill it by choice... and making a choice and killing a deer that doesn't meet legal standards has nothing to do with the DEC trying to make hunting harder like Doc thinks... it has everything to do with a hunter not wanting to take the time to be certain he's taking a legal buck.. again that is the point I have been trying to make.

A great idea to educate non-hunters or even anti hunters on the importance of conservation.. not sure its a good way necessarily to grow hunter numbers.. but I'm all for educating anyone on conservation.

nothing like deer leather!

Why not try to do a little of both? You're in the woods anyway... and I'm sure you aren't going to just let that big eight pointer walk by you if he happens along before a doe
-
The key is getting their interest first I think.. once you have their attention the message sinks in much better.. kind of like many of us getting more conservation conscious as we get older... if they don't get some excitement out of it they are probably going to be less interested in its importance... be nice if it worked the other way around, but I'm not sure it does with youngsters. After I had my kids hooked it was easy to talk about all aspects of hunting, conservation, ethics, etc. in more depth... that's what we would do when we weren't actually out hunting, but home talking abouta new common interest we could share.

We all have our limits.. I've reached mine.. I'd shoot this buck without a second thought.
-
Just that you're making a blanket statement about what hunters can and cannot do... I am saying that I can pic out the legal buck every time if the antlers are visible.. if not visible I don't shoot.. it can't get any simpler than that... I hope you don't think that I believe there aren't fellas out there that will shoot a deer "they" say is by mistake.. I am just saying it isn't by mistake... that point I think can't be argued. The onus is not on the DEC to make hunters responsible.. they just make the rules and its up to hunters to do whatever is necessary to adhere to them. If you're saying that there will be irresponsible hunters that will shoot the wrong deer.. then I am in agreement with that.
-
Put some pics up doc.. I'll pick out the legal buck everytime.. don't care what the head orientation is...
-
Doc.. even broadside, head sideways it is not difficult to count 5 points on a deers head in any configuration... thats is all you need to count to is 5... again.. the idea is to protect yearling bucks... so that should be the objective for the hunter.. the DEC like I said has done nothing to make anyone do anything... they simple altered a regulation for the protection of yearling bucks and it is the resposibility of every hunter to adhere to that law if that is the law... period... a hunters lack of counting ability or resposibility is not an excuse for not adhering to the law.... There may be deer rotting in the woods.. but that is not on the DEC that is on irresponsible hunters not willing to be clear of their target before shooting.
