  1. What you fellas don't understand is that when you are seeing a TON of deer its usually because of over population!! That means too many deer for that area.. you shouldn't be seeing tons of deer... deer are suppose to be wary animals and make it a point to try not to be seen... if you're seeing deer everywhere its because they have no where else to go because there are too many deer. Hence, comes the term hunting.. which means to find deer.
  2. wow .. your lucky year! great job.. beautiful buck!
  3. I never understood why some guys change slugs when they are killing deer with the ones they've been using. (Well unless they change guns) I have never switched slugs in 35 years of deer hunting with my 870... If it ain't broke.. don't fix it!!
  4. I agree with doewhacker.. although my 870 is about 40 years old.. I have never used anything buck Remington 1 .oz slugs without any acccuracy problems or shocking power. Lead is the only way to go short range.
  5. Most of the clubs around New York require a sponsor to join.. The Mad River Club in the Tug Hill region is only $300 a year with about 16,000 acres of land to hunt and fish. I have been thinking of joining because the property is literal across the road from my camp. But, I'm new to the tughill area and want to pick some of the brains of the guys in the area first. I believe they have a website online
  6. Sorry guys, but there is no excuse for mistaking a person for a deer... ever! If you were walking in the woods with a fur coat and antlers tied to your head... I still wouldn't mistake you for a deer. The guy is very lucky that the boys is going to be okay.. Thank God.
  7. He threw the jaw away before I could age it.. but he didn't have the signs of a buck thats was past his prime if I had to guess by his body condition and features he was between 3.5 -4.5... its a common misconception that a big buck with not so many points is on the downward slope. Thats not how it works...He was just genetically destined to be a 6-point.
  8. Why is there an integrity of bowseason and no other season... thats always been my gripe about NYB is they only fight for bowhunters and not all hunters. Was a member long ago and did some business with them... I can tell you some stories about the INTEGRITY of some of the officers and members. Now that doesn't mean that I don't think there is a place for them, there are lots of guys that work really hard for them and they do lobby hard for bowhunting.. but they are extremely lacking when it comes to the overall hunter... just my opinion. By the way, after my past experiences with them, and some of the guys "integrity" I will never be a member again.
  9. Great story.. love a guy with conviction... good job.
  10. OMG Doc.. talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill! Now don't take that to mean I think mole hills ought to be mountains... they are perfectly fine as mole hills.. and no I don't want to make mountains out of mole hills which might make your hunting harder because they'll be too many mountains making it harder to get around. its just a saying.
  11. AR might make it harder to take a buck for a couple years but the buck population would grow in those couple years and they would start to see more bucks in the following years.. and much better bucks..
  12. I didn't say it didn't work at all.. the one buck rule isn't designed to protect young bucks.. just lessen the number of bucks taken... which will leave some young bucks to get older... most of the outfitters in Kansas and Indiana have a mature buck only policy in place
  13. Not a bad idea, but it doesn't protect young bucks
  14. ‎14pt 181 gross green score, 20" inside spread, taken with a shotgun in Wheeler, NY 11/26/10
  15. Its the wheeler buck...guys name is Tom Wheeler.. I talked to him about a story which I will have soon.. its legit
  16. picking out the biggest buck in the woods is easy.. he's the one with all the horn!
  17. Can't go wrong with an 30-06... you will have it forever and can use it for just about any big game.
  18. I've learned that at 51 my eyesight isn't as good as it use to be.. ;D
  19. Not sure if you're familiar with the Tug Hill Region but I don't plan on driving into camp until spring..lol
  20. Yes I do get a lot of days to hunt.. but I put in my dues for years when the kids were young... and never complained or used it as an excuse for not seeing deer or being against a regulation. I just hunted harder on the days i was allowed and made the most of the time I had i the woods. Don't get me wrong.. I'm not saying that a guy that has limited time shouldn't hunt.. he should just shut up and hunt..lol
  21. 5-10 days is a lot to me... i'm talking about the guy that gets out a few saturdays for a couple hours in the am and a couple before dark and we're suppose to alter all the regulations to fit his schedule. We all have to make choices... if i can't put in the time for hunting.. oh well.. I am just saying that I'm not going to use it as an excuse for not seeing deer and needing to change something about hunting. Nothing annoys me more than a guy thats been out twice and complains that there isn't any deer and then follows that up with "the coyotes must be gettin' 'em we need to shoot more coyotes"..lol
  22. the key word there is "wait".. waiting is not hunting in my opinion.. it's waiting. To each his own, but not my cup of tea and honestly I don't think a waiter is much of a hunter.. but he may be a very good harvester.
