  1. I understand that state and federal law processes are separate.. I was just wondering if the procedure might be the same
  2. One only needs to be true to himself and to God... with that everything else falls into place...
  3. I'm not sure that's what it means either... I'm wondering if construction of a bill is again just something to justify the senators paycheck and really isn't needed... I'll bet if there is a possibility that money will somehow be involved..(fines and such) the state wants to make sure they are in the loop by making it a legislative issue. Just speculating though.
  4. I was just thinking that I went to a Montezuma focus group meeting about a month ago to brainstorm ideas about deer hunting and population control on the refuge. I remember them saying that no matter how good the ideas or what solutions they came up with.. all of it would have to be cleared by the federal government... they had to submit a proposal first and it would have to be accepted before it could be implemented. The process they said could take a year to get through if it got through at all.. maybe that's how it works.. the DEC comes up with the proposal based on their research and public opinion and they have to submit a proposal to be accepted by the state.
  5. I'm thinking the DEC wouldn't go through all the trouble of canvasing the public if they didn't have a say in new regulation changes. Politicians get involved I think because they need to make it look like they are doing something to earn their paycheck.
  6. I don't believe they do... instructors pick their own dates and times... I'm sure they give notification to the state that they're having a course..but to my knowledge there is no list kept by the DEC that the public can refer to... in fact I believe the individual instructors handle everything themselves in their local area... advertising, sign-up and everything... some even have to use money out of their own pockets for some of what's needed for their course... that's what I get from the fellas at our club that put on the courses... we do two courses a year.. usually in the early spring before turkey season and late summer just before deer season.
  7. Couldn't care what the senator thinks about AR's.. least important issue facing hunters right now... rather see larger efforts by senators dealing with repealing the SAFE ACT...
  8. I think the DEC knows that starting early will always equate to more deer killed and that is their sole intention... even those who don't find it ideal hunting that early will probably find time to hunt.. again that is the DEC's intention.
  9. That's great you may be in the 1% that do actually think about it when you pull the trigger... and I agree " fill those tags"... my point still stands that most hunters, regardless of how many tags they fill, care little about population control when pulling the trigger. Whether they have learned it or not I contend that the motivation has nothing to do with that thought process and everything to do with filling the freezer or hanging a buck on the wall... how many get DMP tags but pass on doe early in the season to shoot bucks only to have tag soup at the end of the year?... if they were concerned about population control they would shoot deer in the order God sends them. I am not stating what is right or wrong.. just what is.
  10. Right, but the Brits only had one shot as well... we'll be up against a bit more firepower this time... I like a good challenge though..lol
  11. I'm gonna stock up in Harrisburg PA this year at the sportsmans show... fortunately I have more than enough traditional black powder ammo to last me a lifetime... just have to fight the revolution one shot at a time..lol
  12. My good friend Dave just finished his self made longbow... he talked me into doing one... we already make the arrows... its a long process.. probably even longer for me with my limited free time... most of the work is done with a draw knife, rasp and sandpaper..but Dave is preparing to start building bows as a hobby so he'll have a nice little setup where I can go to work on mine. Honestly never thought of documenting it from the start of the bow, but that is a great idea. Maybe even film it.
  13. My favorite hunting stories to tell are about how as a young kid hunting with my dad... the clothing we had back then was nothing anyone could call warm... my father use to make me sit for hours and for many years I spent more time freezing to death than doing any real hunting... yet for some reason I never lost that feeling of being excited about going hunting with my father... I always tell these stories to the young fellas that come to camp complaining that they were really cold that day hunting... as they take off their Under Armor, fleece outfit, 1200 gram Thinsulate Gortex boots, and heated socks while pulling hand warmers out of their pocket.. I respond with a laugh and a " You don't even know what cold is! Let me tell you a story about cold." LOL
  14. I am not a stand hunter... and it doesn't feel like hunting to me when I'm in a stand.. but I would never deny that it is hunting... my opinion is based on my lack of the patience it takes to be a good stand hunter... whenever a hunter enters the woods with the intention of harvesting any animal he is hunting... whether it be in a stand, behind a blind, or in foot pursuit of that animal. Many successful stand hunters put in their time and are quite successful because of the time they have taken to choose stand location, placement, height etc. Hunting is any legal tactic that is affective for taking down whatever game you are hunting... your choice of legal hunting tactic has little to do with hunting ethics or how genuine a hunter you are. Being a deer killer is merely a part of what we all have to be to get to the reason there is hunting in the first place. I think the whole idea of deer conservation and population control is to kill deer.
  15. 99% of hunters are not thinking about population control when pulling the trigger... even the meat hunters have little concern about population control when filling tags... most really like the idea of having so many deer.. it makes filling the freezer easier. Having said that.. those same 99% of hunters suddenly become conservationists and proponents of deer population control when posting on any forum.
  16. LOL.. I don't even know what they were selling.
  17. Saw the logo... just didn't get the feeling from the video that I was being sold on anything but the passion... if that was an ad for gear it was a good one with a better message about how hunters should look at hunting.
  18. Never had a deer take more than 4 days... certainly never had one take 2 weeks.. my butcher did over 600 deer this year and has a small family operation. 2 weeks seems a bit long to me.. especially for someone who is a friend. But, you never know what kind of extenuating circumstances are involved
  19. I didn't see the ad angle at all when watching it... all I saw was the message about a love and passion for the experience and challenge of the hunt
  20. I'm working on that as you speak... self made bow and arrows... gets me to a whole knew level of excitementabout hunting.. took my biggest muzzleloader buck ever this year tracking with my T/C Hawken loaded with patch and roundball... my favorite hunt ever as well.. just wouldn't have been the same for me with rifle or shotgun... even the 2 1/2 hour drag by myself didn't take away from the accomplishment and satisfaction I got from the challenge of using traditional equipment. The only thing I can imagine better is what you described.

  22. Not at all to take away from your deer hunting method, but I have never wanted to know the where and when part of deer before the season.. the challenge and the fun for me now is going into the deer season with no info about the place I'm hunting... I love doing all my info gathering during the season.. I'm not saying this is the way to hunt for everyone, just how I like it... some would say that I am making it very difficult for myself to get a buck... and I would agree with them, its a very tough way to hunt... but that is how I keep up my passion for hunting, by challenging myself to the extreme... so, although I think trail cam pics are cool.. I don't use them.. and although hunting on or around food plots are affective.. I don't plant them....Usually I don't even hunt with what most guys consider modern weaponry..LOL.. I don't even care to now what kind of bucks are in the area... I like the pure hunting experience from start to finish... I have been fortunate to be successful in harvesting a buck most years... but it isn't about just harvesting a buck for me, its all about the experience... and for me personally, the tougher the experience... the greater the satisfaction of the hunt.. my stories are seldom about just seeing a deer and shooting it... my hunting stories start long before I see a deer, kind of like a mystery novel where the exciting part of the book is gathering the clues leading up to solving the mystery... but doing it all in the same day. Sometimes I get the bear, sometimes the bear gets me... but successful or not.. the story is always exciting!
