  1. The first sentence only says you can use any caliber rifle except during any of the deer season...The second sentence only says you can not use a rifle greater than .22 in non rifle areas... where in what is written does it say you can hunt coyotes during deer season with rifle? It doesn't... (remember this is how it is written, word for word, on the website and in the hunting guide).. that is the issue! I know what the law is, but it is definitely not clear here for all hunters to understand.. I don't see the words " It is completely legal to shoot coyotes with rifle during deer season providing you are in an area where rifle is a legal implement" anywhere... please underline that in what is written in the hunting guide or on the DEC website so I can see it
  2. LOL .. we must have been typing and uploading our posts at the same time...!!
  3. The best way to age a deer is by taking the root of a tooth, preparing a very thin stained slice, and counting the rings of cementum under a microscope – just like counting the rings on a tree.
  4. Wonder how many take a coyote while deer hunting thinking its okay? I think they mean you can't shoot a coyote with rifle in areas where rifle hunting for deer isn't permitting but it is written as if you can't shoot a deer with centerfire rifle during open deer season. I have had a bunch of hunters inquire so I went back and read it and can understand the confusion.
  5. Now if I add the word coyote? How many are aware of the law?
  6. You may hunt furbearers with a rifle chambered in any cartridge, except that during any open season for deer - including archery, muzzleloading and regular seasons - you may not possess a rifle larger than .22 caliber rimfire afield, during the day or night, to hunt wildlife, including furbearers in any county or portion of a county where deer hunting with rifles is prohibited during the regular deer season. Centerfire rifles smaller than .22 caliber are permitted.
  7. Took a day from buck hunting to fill a DMP tag on the last day of regular season... nice two man hunt planned by my good friend... his smile was priceless as he approached me after the kill... " I love when a plan comes together" were his first words to me then a hand shake... first hunt of the day and some venison to share... the deer was just a bonus to a great time hunting with a close friend.
  8. When hunting big woods late season sitting can be futile... the vastness and low deer density of the big woods makes waiting for a deer, especially a bigger buck, nothing more than a long wait... in fact you could be there the rest of your life and never see a deer... still hunting or tracking is most affective because the deer don't have to be moving for you to find one.. snow is best... but hunting cover near a good food source is a good bet as well. Bucks are conserving energy after an exhausting breeding season and don't move very far even if they move... they feed mainly at night... because they are conserving energy they tend to hold a bit longer in their bed late in the season and its possible to get the jump on one if you move slowly.
  9. Yeah I suppose you're right... maybe the only stage that doesn't fit me would be #1... although I do get a kick out of our winter muzzleloader league at the gun club... so maybe it fits
  10. yep.. I'm closing in on stage 6 then
  11. There answer also included that other states that have near 100% reporting do it both ways and come up with the same results. I left the meeting shaking my head in disbelief... I told them that there could be nothing as accurate as the real number from 100% reporting.. they just kind of shrugged their shoulders... so that's what we're dealing with in NY
  12. There are many factors that make my deer seasons all great... most of them spoken of already.. last on that list is taking a deer.. that would be a bonus to an already great experience.
  13. They must be good... a friend of mine went to get a pair and they were all out of 1000's .. all they had left were 400's.. which are probably fine if you aren't a sitter.
  14. I had a friend that got in a 4-wheeler accident and lost the use of his legs... he can't hunt like he used to... I think of him and my season doesn't suck anymore... good remedy
  15. I bought a pair of 1000 gr Field & Stream rubber boots at Dicks for 89.00.. they are very warm with one pair of good wool socks
  16. A lot of us at our gun club shoot flintlock during our winter league... I don't hunt much with mine because of how I hunt end up losing much of the powder out of the flash pan while tracking, but I shoot it quite a bit at the range. We shoot 25-100 yards regularly... very nice looking gun
  17. I use to think the same thing... so I took the time to ask some DEC biologists about the reporting situation... their answer was it doesn't really matter to them.. according to them their statistical method is just as good as actual numbers... seemed strange to me yet they were adamant about it and didn't see the urgency of having 100% reporting. It doesn't concern them in the least.
  18. Probably true.. the key word here is "dumb".. they are not necessarily dumber but far less experienced which means that they will do things that a big buck would never do simply because they haven't learn not to.. if they live long enough they will learn just the same and be just as hard to kill. But as a young buck they are far easier to fool and much easier to kill than an older deer. The truth is if young bucks had the same experience as the older bucks there would be far fewer successful hunters in the woods..
  19. I helped a buddy drag out his deer this year... we didn't notice any ticks on the deer... yet shortly after in the truck I had one crawling on my hand... same with a doe I killed a few days ago...been more the last few years than I've ever seen... during the early part of bow season I find them on me daily... ugly little SOB's
  20. I agree.. there never seems to be anything to substantiate the insurance industry theory. I would however believe that car-deer collisions may have an influence on the importance of population control, but farther than that I don't believe so.
  21. Exactly.. nobody is twisting the hunters arm here... the photos are submitted unsolicited... those who have an issue with giving up their info need not submit... FYI.. In a perfect world I wouldn't have a problem with submitting just a photo of the deer with no info, but the fact that its a NY hunting site is the reason I need to be sure the deer I'm showing are legally taken here in NY... the only way to get to that end and maintain the integrity of the site is to require the info I ask for... other similar sites show pics od a deer hanging in a tree without the info or the hunter with the deer... and nobody knows where the deer was taken, who took it, when it was taken, or how... or even if it was taken fair chase... and there is no way to verify the legitimacy of the harvest as it relates to the subject matter of the site...
  22. LMAO... I thought the OP was funny, but this is way funnier!!
  23. I apologize to the forum for having highjacked this thread for this nonsense... I'm done.
  24. From the email he sent me I think he's ecstatic... he doesn't seem to have issues.
