  1. They have probably experienced the sound of the chainsaw before and associate it with the food source
  2. I agree.. in this case though I think all they need to do is to tell more about what you CAN do along with what you can't do. A couple extra words would have done the trick quite easily.
  3. I agree.. a good shot behind the front shoulder in the ribcage area usually leaves a plenty good blood trail.
  4. I kind of agree.. I'm just not sure that these kinds of hunters make that big of an impact as far as deer taken at this point.. and although we might lose him as an in the woods ally.. he would most likely still be a supporter of hunting even as a non participant.
  5. I wonder if you can use a bow in the shotgun only areas adjacent to rifle areas on the second Sunday after lent?
  6. Its easy to make sense of it when you keep adding words that aren't in the original statement.. so far you have re-written the actual language a couple times to make your point.. which actually has been good for making my point.. thanks
  7. The OP copied and pasted the law exactly as written directly from the DEC website... Like I said before... just because you and I are familiar with hunting furbearers and know the law doesn't mean it was written clearly enough for all hunters to understand (which it wasn't)
  8. I really think that anyone that is willing to bail that quickly would have been out soon anyway... regardless of any regulation changes
  9. When I come home from hunting my wife has a kiss and a nice hot meal ready for me... that is the extent of her being involved in hunting with me... ever. Like wooly it just isn't something I can imagine enjoying... fortunately she's ok with it too and just wants to have the venison, which she loves!
  10. Like always a tasteless pic and statement like this shows up without the idiot having the b@lls to show his mug in the pic with the deer... tells me that he knew it was tasteless and didn't much care and certainly didn't want any real hunters to know who was behind the classless statement. I'll bet you he was puffing his chest pretty good in front of his also idiot buddies who, I'm sure, thought it was funnier than hell. What's really bothersome is it might have been an adult or even a father and not a young kid that did it...
  11. Not sure there would ever be enough man power to have an ample amount of check stations throughout the entire season. which means that some hunters might have to travel long distances just to check in a deer... probably not practical for Hunters or the DEC.
  12. It says CAN and EXCEPT during all parts of deer season in the same sentence... and as you just said.. "This is why people are getting confused".. that was my point and still is... the way it is worded is confusing to a lot of hunters. The rest of the sentence even put with the first part only says you can't use large caliber rifles in non rifle areas... it doesn't clearly say anywhere that you can use them during deer season in rifle areas.
  13. Like Doc I won't ever quit until I physically can't get in the woods any more... you're not going to lose the hardcore hunters because they're hardcore and you won't lose the weekend warriors because they only hunt a limited amount of days anyway and probably only take one buck, if that, anyway... what will happen is that there will be a decrease in hunters taking bucks during seasons outside of bow season due to the fact that if you get a buck with bow you'll be done hunting bucks for the year... you may however see a huge rise in the number of does taken by those who take their buck early and still want to be in the woods hunting. Or maybe even see waterfowl hunting on the rise by hunters that always made the choice to buck hunt instead, but already took their buck early and now have the time to hunt waterfowl.
  14. I already know what the law is and you know what the law is.. you still don't get that from the way it is written... especially if you are new to hunting furbearers... and you still can't underline a part of that statement where it says that you CAN hunt coyotes during deer season. You may hunt furbearers with a rifle chambered in any cartridge, except that during any open season for deer - including archery, muzzleloading and regular seasons... this is the sentence.. not the one you underlined. Here is kind of what you did with your underlining: You can kill all mammals during an open season for that mammal, excluding humans.
  15. Still would like someone to underline the part that says you can use any rifle during deer season... it only states that you cannot... nowhere does it say you CAN...as written.
  16. I've never hunted with anything but primitive muzzlerloader with patch and roundball during the late season...never even shot a modern inline... it would be nice to hunt into January... even a doe only season would be great... it'll never happen but nice to dream...
  17. Tooth dissection can be done anytime as long as you keep the jawbone.. it is the only sure way to know the true age... tooth wear is very good but the type of food that the deer are eating can make a difference in the tooth wear possibly giving a less that accurate reading after 3.5 years
  18. My friend hunted it earlier in the season with bow.. he talked to the park rangers who were very helpful... there are some areas outside the parks that are public land and able to be hunted with the permit. The only access problem he had was some of the tough terrain... parking and such I don't know about with all the snow.
  19. I'm pretty sure that there are portions of the focus area that allow shotgun as well as bow
  20. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/82382.html
  21. There is hunt going on in southern NY into January... more of a population control.. doe only in most areas.. I'll see if I can find you the link on how to get registered to hunt the area.. I think it is bow only as well.. but I heard there are lots of deer.
  22. Be terrible if these things multiplied to great numbers here in NY... they are big eaters.. a big population of them would cause a real problem competing for food with deer and the other animals. With habitat dwindling in parts of NY the whitetails would definitely be affected by that competition.
