  1. He may be a "junkyard buck" but that old Roman nose tells me he has been around for a while. Can't say for sure but I will bet he is an older buck on his way down as far as antlers go. GREAT VIDEO!!
  2. To all my friends here and especially Luna' This is the first time in 37 years that I have not shot a buck and probably over 50 years since I went without fresh venison in the freezer. It was still a great year for me. Spent some time in ladder stands, some in ground blinds and even a little time sneaking around the back forty. To all that filled their freezers, congratulations, to those like me, find a friend and raid his freezer but most of all to all of the guys and gals on hear, my wishes are for a safe, joyous and happy holiday season and to Luna, you are my favoriteSee all of you next year, Poppy
  3. Deerstalker, I have used the 7.62x39 (mini 30) for a few years now. Mine is in a CZ 527 bolt action. The only ammo that I have used is the Federal Fusion, both the regular Fusion and the Fusion MSR. Very accurate in the 527 and last year one of the largest bucks that I have ever shot was taken with the 7.62x39. The range was about 150 to 160 yards, a front quartering, deer went 60 yards and piled up. Great exit wound and good blood trail. My 527 is rapidly becoming my favorite deer gun.
  4. Lina sure has a a fan club and it is well warranted. Get job both of you. I wish I had the opportunity to see her work in person. I am still waiting for the announcement that autographed pictures of Luna will be available. Poppy
  5. Hi Thug,

Sounds like your day was a great one, but let's see, son gets nice buck two years in a row, two BIL's get bucks today.  Am I missing something here.  I guess I have to nominate you for camp cook again.  Just kidding, congrats to all of the successful, especially your son.  It is great to see the young ones stepping up and getting involved in our great sport.  Again welcome back to Columbia County.

P.s.  My day, sat for 9 hours, never saw a deer.  A few shots, but not many.

  6. Got my 4y, but things are not looking great here on the farm. The beavers moved in, flooded a large portion of the wooded area. Contacted DEC, the dam is on adjacent land whose owner does not want it destroyed, so no permit. Suggested allowing trapping. Have done that for several years, but now the backed up water is very deep so trapping will require a boat or canoe. Hey Thug, glad you are set, look forward to hearing from you in the coming weeks. Poppy
  7. Hey Thug, Let's see; 1st day son gets a 6 pointer, later on wife gets a 6 pointer, it only seems fair that you get one also. It has been very quiet here on the farm. Very few deer seen, I only saw 5 all season and now it looks like my season is over with. Got sick Friday night, raspy cough, stuffed up sinuses, coughing up lots of nasty looking stuff. Pretty sure it is pneumonia. Will head to my doctor tomorrow, but regardless of what he says, the wifey is not going to let me outside until I'm better, unless it is take her shopping. I enjoyed tracking your season and again congrats to your son. I will look forward to some more good reads from you next season. Stay healthy and have a great holiday season. Poppy
  8. BigGuy, I know this is a little late, but for future reference, Shuey's does a good job. He is located on Ben Ganson Road in the Town of Ghent. Also, Alan Briggs, who is located in Columbiaville. He is a little farther away, but he is the one I use and I have been very satisfied. His number is 518 821-0012. Poppy
  9. Congrats, A great buck for sure. You certainly earned that one after all of the tracking you and Luna did. Again, I enjoy your stories and pictures. You know, maybe with Luna's fan club, autographed pictures of her are warranted. You certainly are a hunter's hunter.
  10. Thug, Great story and more importantly the greatest of great memories. Yes you may have created a monster, but it is hard to beat having him as a life long hunting partner. Again great job by both of you and maybe you should ask everyone for a camp apron for your next birthday. Happy Thanksgiving, Poppy
  11. It worked for me. Beautiful buck. Let's hope he visits you in the daytime. Good luck & shoot straight. Poppy
  12. Thanks guys, I thought my 69 year old eyes had finally kicked. Great forum and greater members.
  13. Hey Guys, Great bucks and I am sure good stories, just one question; where is the harvest thread? I have looked and looked but cannot find it. HELP!!!
  14. For me it is a CZ 527M carbine in 7.62x39, 1.5 to 5 Thompson Center scope, 123 grain Hornady ammo, a hot thermos of coffee and a comfortable tree house with roof, windows, carpeting and a comfortable chair.
  15. What great stories and pictures. Can't help but wish a dog of that character was mine. Keep the stories coming. Go Luna, go.
  16. Mine would be my CZ527 Carbine in 7.62x39, 1.5 - 5 scope, 123 grain Fusion ammo, sitting in my pop up blind in the hardwood forests of 4Y.
  17. Congrats to you and your family. Hope this doesn't mean no gas money for Columbia County deer hunting trips. Please give her my best for a job well done. Poppy
  18. Per MD, "Can't Believe Its Not Butter". I wonder what he uses?
  19. JoeHunter, As a veteran of the Vietnam Era, Brown Water Navy, I can understand how you may be biased based on the previous uses of that round. I commend and thank you for your 30 years of service to our great country and from one vet to another I will always defend your right to have those biases, but the original question was "Does anyone use a 7.62x39 for deer hunting". All that I was trying to do was provide some info to that question. As for thin skin, I was not upset with you. You expressed an opinion that I felt required an answer. As for our differences, be thankful for all of thee veterans that served to ensure that we can express our differences freely and openly. Again Happy New Year and may your 2015 deer season be as enjoyable as mine. Poppy
  20. Hi JoeHunter, Let me tell you what kind of man would use the "Commie 7.62x39". I am nearly 70 years old and still hunt the old fashion way, walking around. I have back and shoulder problems which mandate that I use a lighter weapon, with very moderate recoil. Did a lot of research and found the CZ 527M carbine in a caliber that mimics the CARTRIDGE THAT HAS KILLED MORE DEER THAN THE '06--THE 30/30. Using this 5 3/4# carbine, with little or no recoil allows me to continue to hunt after more then 50 years. I have had '06, 308, 243, 6.8 SPC. Yes they all kill deer, but those shot with the 7.62x39 are no less dead than when shot with any other caliber. I know the limitations of my weapon, I practice year round (Yep, "Commie" surplus) and pick my shots very carefully. I don't take 300 yard shots at running deer, I must use my hunting skills to get within that proper range. Don't want to start a whizzing' match, just want you to understand that everyone's personal situation is different, whether health, financial or whatever. Please don't criticize a person's action until you know his/her circumstances. Happy New Year and may your 2015 deer season be as enjoyable as mine will be. Poppy
  21. 49, This year I used my new CZ 527M in the 7.62x39. I was able to take one deer with it and it worked very well. About a 175 yard shot using Federal Fusion 123 grain ammo. My rifle also shoots any military surplus that I have tried very well. Use it, enjoy it, just be very sure of your shot placement and range. Good luck.
  22. To both of you, good job, don't look back, only straight ahead. For me just had my 10 year smoke free re-birthday
  23. Hi Thug, Well I also went deer less as far as my buck goes. Did get a small doe for camp meat. Also had the unfortunate task of finishing off beautiful 8 pointer with a 20" inside spread. Another hunter had hit it and when I jumped him his intestines were dragging on the ground. Never smelled anything so bad in my life. I left it in the woods, but will go back at sometime to harvest the antlers. As for your tag soup, I have a 4T doe tag and my buck tag to contribute. I think it will add a little northern cuisine & taste to your soup. As I said before it has been great chatting with you and I hope we can meet up some time in the future. Happy Holidays to you and yours and just remember, most McDonalds are open late on weekends. Poppy
  24. I checked out my wife's, hers doesn't even have an agitator. Guess that must be my job!!!
  25. Hi Deerthug, Another week in the books. Had a rough Thanksgiving, lots of heavy wet snow and no electricity for 18 hours. Got in several short sits this week, not much moving. Best day was today when three does and a fawn came charging past me. Short time later two uninvited guests come by. Pretty well messed up the rest of the sit. Got the two "guests" headed back in the right direction and sat till dark. Nothing more. Got one more day to hunt, that is tomorrow. Family is coming up from LI Friday night so hunting is out until maybe last thing Sunday. If you get up, I wish you the best of luck and it has been great chatting with you. Best wishes for a safe and enjoyable holiday season. Poppy
