LOL, That is a good point.. I think it's already extinct! "And here we have the original Levitt style home, the model of affordable housing, once plentiful but now exinct.."
  2. Dunno, Check out these guys.. an affiliate of pheasants forever.. http://www.grousepartners.org/
  3. I've been to Powderbourne Gun Club & Restaurant once. A member of another site I hit has a house in PA who turned us on to them. Nothing fancy, real easy going crowd. Owner himself cleaned the birds while we sampled the food.. Simple restaurant with really reasonable prices.. Had a great time, weekends get crowded/booked fast. Try for a Monday shoot, some of the big $$$ weekend warriors are terrible shots, and that means you'll see more birds! ;D ;D And although they have a alot of birds, they do run outsometimes, so don't book too late.. Anyone else go there?
  4. I know there is discussion for a new section, but why can't get the ball rolling here.. Let's keep this as a reference topic, and post comments in another topic in the section.. Powderbourne Gun Club & Restaurant 2071 Baus Road East Greenville, PA 18041 (215) 679-9860 Http://powderbourne.com/ 10 Pheasants mixed $160.00, Dog & handler was another $75 .
  5. Great Idea. You can even compile the info in a 3 ring binder for the season, and compile the stats afterwords when you have more time..

LI real estate taxes are killing farms & affordable housing, let alone hunting land.. It's too expensive down here..
  7. Don't worry, I think Mossy Oak just came out with a camo diaper, in 'Messy Oak Leaf' pattern..
  8. You cannot legally hunt brookhaven labs.. Years ago, guys did, it was a non-issue, everyone who wanted to know, knew why those parked trucks were there for. In today's environment, no hunting alowed on lab property.. Across WFP you can find spots to hunt.. Take a ride, make some notes on a map, then scout them on google.. Or just ride & remember where the trucks are parked! 8)
  9. First hunt there, it was slow.. As I was coming down in the dark a HERD of does came running though like a stampede and hung out like 10 minutes, feeding under me, in the dark.. I saw a huge buck 2 years ago there, midday on the prowl.. hung up 40-50 yards out.. I used to carry a quart urine jug, but that day, well, wasnt quite enough.. and as luck would have it, one of the biggest deer I've seen in the woods comes by & winds my stink. I now have a 2 qt apple juice bottle!
  10. I thought as long as the tree was not damaged in anyway, any stand was good.. I know of a few home mades on states land that are permanently there though.. someone even used a 'olive drag' painted alum extension ladder for one.. I have left a few stands out for the season, but secure the foot platforms in the upright position with the cable locks so they are unusable by everyone else without a key, or bolt cutters..
  11. Now, I know some of you are wondering "How is this hunting gear??" We'll I'll tell ya, sitting in the ladder stand mid day, eating a steaming hot meal make those frigid hours not so cold.. I have the PCS, personal cooking system. It boils a cup of water in a minute. It's a metal cup, with a neoprene cozy / handle around it, and a heat collector built into the bottom. Also included are a snap lid & a cap for the base of the cup to protect the collector. The cup twist mounts onto the base/burner assembly. Nothing special, the valve isn't that great at low flame regulation, but with some work, you can simmer the cup's contents. The fuel canisters screw mount onto the bottom of the base. Its a blended fuel, so it burns hotter the alky or propane for use at high altitudes/cold weather. When your done, you unscrew the fuel can from the burner, & store it in the cup with the burner for a compact package. Two years ago, I just toted cocoa, and bullion cubes, and a few water bottles on my adventures.. I was happy, but I felt I could enjoy this unit a little bit more.. Last year, I added Lipton Chicken noodle with EXTRA noodles.. I didn't even leave the ladder stand. I secured my gun, stood up, and fired up the Jetboil on the seat, then dumped 1/2 of the water into a thermal cup for cocoa, then added the Lipton's soup. Cooked it 4-5 minutes on low, then unscrewed the burner, popped it in my bag, then sat & enjoyed a hot lunch as the snow fell.. It was awesome & hopefully to be repeated many more times.. The downside of all this hot food enjoyability, is the fuel and a possible construction issue. If you cannot get fuel cans, your stuck. I usually have one int he unit, another at camp, and extras in the truck. The construction issue, isn't 'really' an issue. I've have found myself sliding down inclines on more than one occasion, usually feet first, on my @$$, unloaded gun held at port arms, & pack on my back.. and have destroyed some stuff from these 'rides'. I think you could potentially ruin one of these units if it's at the bottom of your bag. Knowing how I am, I secure the unit in the top of the waterbladder pouch in my pack. Riding high in the bag, no chance of me squishing it.. With a MSRP around $100, it's worth taking a little extra care in toting it.. Jetboil PCS Page Have a safe, warm hunt season this year, NYDeer
  12. bowhunting locally I usually go out alone, trips upstate I try to team up with a friend.. BUT if nobody is available, I go myself..
  13. Good move Wildcats, hopefully the karma will come back your way when needed.. You shoulda took a pic with the deer, the other shooter & yourself for the wall..
  14. I saw this idea on another site.. Hunters post up info they have about specific parcels, to help others out, and possibly get together with other members who hunt the same areas.. Not sure how to do it though, a separate forum section, or incorporate it into the regional section on where the land is located.. I have some DEC regional map books around, and many paper pamphlets from DEC as well.. I know some are available online, but not all of them.. NYS State Forests - Statewide By Region NYS DEC Places to go
  15. Thanks for the detailed reply. I'd rather know the real reasons why the skin mounts were so difficult for him to find than by what he went through.. He was just told, "No, we don't do them.", end of conversation.. I'll pass this info on to them.. Personally, I'd rather photo the fish, get a glass repro, and enjoy a few good meals!
  16. Some topics/ideas to consider before looking around.. What is your budget? Does that include a scope/case/ammo/sling? A new gun is obvious, but have you considered used? What type/style gun do you like? Bolt/lever/single shot/ semi auto? Metalwork blued high gloss, or matte? stainless? parkerized, or even coated with one of the new polymer coatings? Stocks, wood, laminated wood, synthetic/black? synthetic painted? Now my $0.02.. Hunting whitetails, I'd opt out of high gloss metalwork. Less reflection/glare & scratches wouldn't be as obvious.. Stocks, anything but a standard, nice piece of wood.. Not that I don't love seeing wavy wood grains, but laminated stocks & synthetics are way tougher.. Worrying about getting a scratch on your 'pretty' gun shouldn't be a distraction while hunting.. Caliber, as stated, the 270-308-30.06 are the forerunners, will take almost everything.. Odd calibers are cool in my book, but finding a box of ammo at Uncle Hucks in Middle-of-nowhere will be impossible.. Action to me would depend on type of deer hunts you do.. Stand hunts or areas with open spaces would be perfect for a bolt action, but busting brush and stalking I prefer a quick swinging lever.. The most important feature I can convey to you, is a gun you can shoulder & get on sight as quickly and naturally as possible.. Having game bound away while searching for it thru the scope is very frustrating to say the least.. Makes a great story, but having the deer in the freezer is way more satisfying.. Good luck, check out Gunbroker.com to see what's available, price ranges.. Also, if you go this route, shop around different gun shops for the FFL Transfer fees.. Some charge exorbitant fees because they don't want to be bothered..
  17. Send a 'picture message' off the cell to your email address. I dunno if it hosts pics here, or register for a photobucket acct for free hosting..
  18. That HUGE bear in Lake Grove is one intimidating mount! Do you do skin fish mounts? A friend's brother took a 49" 48# striper 2 years ago, wound up going upstate to get the mount done.. Everyone he tried only offered painted bodies..
  19. +1 I noticed deer in areas with heavy pines/evergreens have darker colored racks..
  20. Luckily nobody was hurt! I was considering a buck statue for my lawn, but now I have my doubts! Guess you should paint it blaze orange, or better yet, put sunglasses & a straw hat on it.. LOL
  21. Do you know what your looking for for pheasants? Not to be a wise ass, but first time I went, my friend spotted almost all them, until he explained what to look for.. Use your binocs, and scan the field, looking for an eye/band/head.. If you spot one, try to advance on it, and if you get close, run at it, you want the bird to take flight.. Running on the ground, you'll never get one.. After a rain is best, but a damp morning works well too.. Once sun gets up, they like to dry thier plumage in the sun.. Also, If you can drive a road along a hedgerow/field, at about 5-10 mph, & look just into the brush for the birds on the ground.. When you spot some, drive up 50-75 yards, dump car, don't slam doors, & walk back, off the road towards birds.. They're tough birds & will take a partial shot; then run once they hit the ground so be preparred to look for them..
  22. I had a magazine article from my father in law years ago about this.. The reasoning is, the turkey are way more wary than the deer and calm the deer as Doc stated.. It recommended setting out a deer decoy along with the flock too.. Can't say if it works one way or another, never tried it.. Plus, it sounds like alot of stuff to carry!
  23. I still use the 'Oakdale' guy for donations.. I used him ONCE for butchering years ago.. Huge bodied buck from upstate, around 200lbs.. I pick up 2 bags, 48lbs of meat.. I asked if a bag was missing, and they look at me like I had 2 heads.. I figured they took some for the sausage grind, which I didn't pay extra to get.. After the DEC arrest, I'd put money thats where my meat really went..
