  1. Maybe Im totally wrong, but when I think Catskills I think "Oh thats down by NYC". Does anyone think or know if there is above average hunting pressure when compared to the rest of the state in the Catskill area? To me, because I like to think logically, hopefully I am lol, that the Catskills would see more pressure due to the fact that it is well within reach of NYC hunters. With that, I would expect just like the rest of the state, that you would get: people who poach, people who hunt to fill their freezers, people who hunt for that trophy buck, hunters who hunt for the sake of hunting, and people who just plain dont know what they're doing, but because of the Catskills being associated with NYC all that is above average when compared to the rest of the state. So maybe the DEC is putting these restrictions into play because the herd just cant take/handle that type of pressure? Im curious to know what percentage of the annual kill comes from the Catskills area. If DEC is not allowing DMPs because the population is at or below goal, this could be a direct correlation with what I stated about Catskills & NYC if proven true. Maybe ARs is the DEC's way to keep the buck population at a norm since there are no DMPs I would assume that the kill of bucks as a whole would increase, with ARs it likely guarantees the survival of more bucks who do the deed with does who then pop out more deer. This is just an observation I have made given what I have read here and what information I have gathered. . If what you stated is accurate I wonder if the same thing is happening to the deer population and this is what the DEC is doing to combat that? To me... It makes sense. Im thinking the deer cant reproduce fast enough to maintain what the DEC believes as a population norm because of the increased pressure, so they have had to take these measures to give the furry buggars a fightin chance.
  2. I wish 6p was added.. but that's wishful thinking. Maybe someday, then I won't have to worry so much about every scrub I let walk getting blasted by the next guy.

  4. I'm hunting "southernish" oneida county too (general area around where rte 5 and skyline meet) glad to see I'm not the only one.
  5. Same goes with me man. Usually there are scrapes along the perimeter of the field I hunt along with tree rubs on like 1 out of every 5 saplings on my property lol. No scrapes anywhere this year, same goes with the the wood lot I hunt a few miles down the road. I just found today actually some rubs, 3 of them to be exact, the first rubs I've seen all season on my way to hang up my climber.
  6. My girlfriends sight stripped out as well, what I did was put a nut on the end luckily the hex bolt was long enough to accept a nut. Its a shame the sights are made of aluminum with such tight thread patterns especially since they are always being adjusted. Aluminum just doesn't hold up. I understand its about weight but I don't see the need for such tight thread patterns.
  7. i shoot a '94 30-30 with the winchester super x 150 grain not that that answers your question, but i was just wonderin do you have a scope on yours or is it even possible with the way the cartridge ejects? i dont ever intend to use a scope just curious how far out are you comfortable shooting with it?
  8. I never saw the point of wearin a back tag especially after i was sitting in my stand on state land and had 2 dec officers walk within the outer reaches of bow range and not even see me. granted i didnt yell or anything as to not potentially scare anything away in the area but i was standing up flailing my arms waving at them. What really got me was they stopped where there wasnt a bush, tree, or branch between us and they were lookin right in my direction and never saw me. ....kinda creeped myself out wondering if i ever been in the presence of someone else in there stand and not ever know it haha. but anyway if they cant effin see my 240 lb fat ass in a 13ft tree stand then how they gonna see a back tag. ill produce the tags when they can see it.
  9. just really excited right now wanted to share my success.... kinda. no one in my family hunts so they wouldnt be able to understand, you guys are all i got!! anyway i made a ground blind on the edge of a field along a small woodlot surrounded by fields for the most part. nothin was happenin at all and at about 4:55 i see a spec on the horizon out in front of me. i got my binos out and sure enough it was a deer. had no clue what it was if it was a buck or not, even with 7x45 binos i could not make out if it had a rack this is how far away he was. so not givin a shit at this point i rattled. waited for the sound to carry, and BAM. this deer perks up and immediately started trottin zig zagging right in my direction. as he got closer it was apparant to me he was a pretty decent buck. i kept rattling to keep his attention and the more i rattled the faster he came. this was my first time rattling ever and was lovin the results. he dove into some woods that L'd out into the field i was watching and next thing i know hes right in front of me 150 yds away on the opposing woodline. he continued to follow the edge of the woodline which slightly got closer to my positoin. being afraid of him losing interest and diving into the wooded ravine, i grunted. BINGOOOO. this guy turns right at me and slowly made his way towards me. im thinkin if he gets any closer hes gonna see me draw. so i txt my friend at 5:05 that "i got a buck comin g2g" and drew my bow with him roughly 70 yds away. after about 3 cycles of takin a handful of steps and stoppin and lookin he turned broadside and im thinkin i should shoot i should shoot. but bein on the edge of the field like that and losin light fast i couldnt judge distance and judged him at 50 yds or so i thought. still at full draw and beginning to shake rapidly to the point where it looked like i was sitting on a jackhammer, waiting for him to turn or do something, he finally turned his head and i let my bow down. time is now 5:14 as i immediately made another txt lol. but at this point it was too dark to shoot. thankfully wind was in my favor, he didnt see me and turned around and slowly made his way back to the woodline grazing every now and then...... and waiting for me in the morning!! to my complete utter disappointment i paced his last position broadside at 37yds i was kickin myself for that. I just knewwwww i shoulda put markers out, but no to lazy. BUT.... when i got home i got on google earth, and to my complete surprise when i first saw him on the horizon he was at 550 yds. now i feel pretty damn proud that 1) i was able to rattle a deer (a mature one) at a distance such as that, and to bring him in that close. 2) on a personal note i was able to hold my bow at full draw for 9 mins. 3) to me the most important, I didnt spook him! ...and more about the deer, his rack came out to his nose and i estimated his inside spread to be 17-18 inches as the rack was well outside the ears when he was alert. tines were tall as well, 10-12 inches. i remember thinking when he was broadside that if i shoot i hope he dont go far cuz hes gonna be a pain in the ass to drag out, he was rather quite large haha thats my story. to some this may be an everyday hunt, but for this guy.... ive only been hunting 2 yrs (this being my second) and only ever see 1.5 yr old bucks from time to time, so to see a deer like that and get him within bow range was out of this world for me. makes me wanna call jeff foxworthy and all the boys at tecomate and give them a jim cramer BOOOO YAAAAAAAA hahaha
  10. ill just keep it in my back pocket. im always switching layers its a pain in the balls and a great opportunity for me to lose my tags.
  11. i had a buck same size as in the video come marchin through the woods while in my ground blind. he was 15 yds away downwind dunno how the dummy didnt wind me but he kept marchin on, i bleated with the can when he was about 30 yds away, didnt pay no attention to it what so ever. then i rattled at him and same thing, just kept going on his way like i was a ghost or something haha
  12. my friend saw one yesterday at his hunting land down in sherburne
  13. probably wont have to worry about that for quite some time, im lucky if i see a 2.5 yr old buck where i hunt. but when that happens and i take a really decent buck guess ill have to re write the rules!!! hahaha
  14. a guy i know took a yearling buck just the other day that was missing his hoof on one leg. his legs were normal except he had no hoof, just ended there like a nub and had what reminded me of a dogs padded palm. same texture and everything. he had to have been born that way as a deformity. the guy said he limped really bad and thats what made him take him.
  15. youd think with something that massive on top of your head would limit where you can go without getting tangled up all the time haha especially in the adks. . . . just look for a swath through the woods about yay high n wide youll find him!!
  16. thats a pretty interesting story!! wish i had that luck whats up with the neck on your buck lol almost looks like he got run over by somethin and got his neck squished
  17. Ive only been hunting for 2 yrs, and only with a bow. this being my second year. Ive shot my bow twice in the field. Got a 4pnt opening day last yr and a 5pnt this year. at this stage in the game im not too worried about how old it is as long as its a legal. and like some have already stated... i wont shoot a tiny lil guy or something you need binos to see antlers on lol. ive also made a rule for myself that each deer i take has to atleast match the deer i previously took. so far so good on that haha
  18. pretty much what he deserves!!!
  19. true that!!! my friends a farmer and he found a decent buck dead in his corn with an arrow stuck in the side of him already. arrow was just forward of his back legs, prolly neutered him poor fella!!!
  20. 132 is what i heard. sure looks bigger than that with the mass it has lol
  21. i think its hilarious when a squirrel is doin its thing then sees you for the first time. makes me giggle watchin them jump and scream lol
  22. anyone bow hunt the state land around Georgetown, specifically Mariposa and Muller Hill State Forest? I did some scouting back in August and couldnt believe the sign. I hunted there Tuesday evening and all I saw was two DEC spraying the trees (almost all of the trees). I figured I had to have come to the right place seeing that all the land posted getting to the state land was owned by hunting clubs like Bucks Unlimited etc...
  23. i would have done the same thing. IMO, it makes me sick to think that humans are so governed by our laws that they wont say F the law this is what has to be done knowing that the current laws governing this particular situation do not allow humane acts to be taken, and instead walk away knowing that the animal will continue to suffer until it finally passes just because on some piece of paper it says its illegal to take the animal out of season etc... in these instances i dont care what the law is im going to do what is right for the animal. string me up, fine me, whatever idc atleast ill go to sleep at night knowing i did the right thing that day.
  24. right now using doe urine. first time ever using it. on opening day was in the woods at 6, was setting up my scent wicks, got to the last one and thought i heard something coming down wind far off in the woods. barely got set up in my stand and heard a branch break about 15 yds away. at that point i knew what it was but couldnt see it. i saw a sillouette about 3 mins later sniffing my last scent wick i set up. the buck continued to sniff all the wicks around my stand and hung around for the next 45 mins well into daylight. however he moved a long with some doe that appeared and by this time too far off for any sort of shot. then tuesday of this week i had 3 doe follow my exact path in the woods as i had sprayed my boots with the stuff and they walked within 5 yds of me downwind. never spooked or anything just kept on with their business and passed right by. then wednesday morning in the same stand as opening day above. wind was blowing the same direction and whatta ya kno that same buck comes crashing through downwind and at 7:15 he presented a shot 13 yds away and now i have meat in the freezer!!! one thing to note from all this is that both times i saw that buck he came from downwind following that scent. never smelled me or looked cautious and came with in 30 ft of me both times. so, IMO, id have to say doe urine works quite well as a cover scent and attractant in the early stages of the season.
