ive rattled in 3 bucks. won was a monster and was 400+ yds away so i was rattling hard to get his attention and he came in on a dead run just about. ive grunted one buck in blindly, all the other times ive grunted was to steer them into bow range. as for the bleat the deer just dont give a darn about it where im from. ive tried it when they were right in front of me and they just look and ignore.

did you call the local farmer and tell him his cow is loose?

i have a wildview...... HORRIBLE. its soooooo slow, ive set it up and walked infront of it to test it out. #1 its got about a 15'-20' range #2 like 2 second trigger speed. #3 batterys last only 2 weeks maybe 2.5 weeks if i let it drain the batteries completely #4 i dont even anticipate it catching anything at night, if i do its a bonus pic. when i tested it... it took 1 picture out of 5 attempts. thats with being able to watch the red sensor sense motion then the green sensor take the picture. every time both did what they were supposed to do but only took one picture of me!!! i was walking across at the furthest distance that it would sense motion which was like i said between 15 and 20 feet, and waiting two minutes in between pictures.

i had a hawk fly out of the same tree i was in and nab the chipmunk i was intently watching all afternoon right out from under me. saw a blue jay attack a gray squirrel... blue jay won. ive had deer walk up to me close enough to poke them in the eyes and i got it all on tape. that was the defining moment that got me into deer hunting haha the coolest thing ive had happen was when i was sitting in my stand before dark early in the season, i kept hearing something above me breathing, it was very faint but very consistent and every now n then i could hear it move. dont you kno its a porcupine sleepin. well he woke up and started getting closer so i decided to make it apparent that i was there and so i started movin. well when they move they move at a snails pace and it was cool to watch him, then i moved and he stopped and looked at me for a little bit got a little closer trying to figure out what i was then decided he'd better get movin up to the top of the tree and fast. that porcupine hauled butt up to the top and chilled there the rest of my hunt. it was so comical to watch him with how slow he moved on the way down and how fast he moved on the way up.

ill sit in my normal bow spot in thinking that they will be on the usual patterns then move to a funnel area around 930 and sit all day
-
im in favor of changing the times
-
Yea that's what my intentions were but the skies opened up on us and cut us short. Atleast I got to see how the patterns shifted from 50 to 100 lol

Ps the taped holes are the brennekes at 50 yds. Very consistent predictable groups. May as well have shot blindfolded with the remington slugs they were so unpredictable and inconsistent
-
Put some rounds through my remington 1100, brand new shotgun has only gone through a handful of rounds before today. I was shooting brennekes classic magnum and regular remington slugs at 100yds with iron sights. The groups with the brennekes were quite remarkable to say the least where as the remington rounds were scattered all over. Shooting 3 shots per group this is what the brennekes produced time after time. Mind you I was shooting at a white piece of paper intended for rifles with high powered scope so at 100yds I was aimimg for the center of the paper as best I could. Started to pour so we quit early and didn't have a chance to sight the gun properly. Anyone have any preference as to what ammo they prefer? Obviously I'm more favorable towards the brennekes than remington haha

before i started putting my gear in a tub with pine branches i had my gear layed out on wood pellets. all my stuff had that distinct woody smell i dont know if it helped or not but i cant imagine it did any harm

You can change the legal shooting time as close as you want to the crack of dawn as you want with plenty of shooting light and still have the majority of accidents occur before legal time because majority of those accidents happen in the dark!! So I'm definitely not trying to beat the system when I make safe calculated shots before legal shooting time. Its called using your brain and using common sense. And don't tell me I'm not using my brain or common sense because I let bambi walk until that exact time when its "legal". I think whoever wrote the law lacks the common sense I'm talking about. But of course not everyone has common sense and that's why we have to be regulated to begin with..

I have an 8' x 8' back stop on some offroad caliber castors that i stacked hay bales on for outdoor use. said to heck with that ill just buy a target (similar to the one in the pics). but now i have a 60 ' x 40' pole barn with AMPLE room for an indoor archery range that I want to use the backstop in. those plans just got the fire burning inside my head for some sweet plans!!!

thanks for the help guys. I hope it never comes down to that, because those charts are rediculous. Mother nature throws in way too many variables to be able to make a chart that dictates legal shooting light. I understand we need some sort of regulation, in a perfect world if everyone was honest and safe (impossible) we wouldnt need those rules. Ill gladly admit that I dont have an alarm or reminder set for legal shooting light, and wont think twice about taking a deer as long as i can clearly identify it and all my surroundings and see through my peep sight. I was just looking for more information on the subject as I had an assumption the law about that would come from way out in left field knowing NYS had everything to do with it.

thanks for the link!! Still doesnt make sense though. 4:33 in the westernmost part of the state is going to be much different than 4:33 in the easternmost part of the state. sorry i honestly didnt know there was a thread about this from last year. I was just looking for some clarification, wasnt trying to stir the pot or anything.

I know the law states legal shooting hours as sunrise to sunset. So does this mean I need to follow some chart from the weather channel or noaa and lose a minute or two every morning and night in order to be legal?? Not for nothing but theres a solid 15-25 mins of solid shooting light before and after the given sunrise and sunset for a particular day. On top of that cloud cover/weather and moon phase play a huge role in the amount of sunlight too. For example today I wouldnt even think of drawing my bow back until 6:40, where as a few days ago i wouldnt hesitate for a minute to draw back at 6:15. I would think the DEC would have a link to some time tables or something of that nature for the legal shooting hours if thats what they govern it by. Looking for some clarification as I tried to research it on dec website but all i found was "Big game hunting hours are from sunrise to sunset". To me that leaves a lot of grey area.

when we smell for example a bowl of chicken riggies... we smell chicken riggies. a deer smells the chicken, the riggies, the peppers, mushrooms, etc.... and i think i do a pretty darn good job at keeping scents that alert deer at bay. the biggest issue i find that gives my position away is my breath. i have a mask in the works to try and curtail this problem but thats classified haha. today was a good example of what i mean about breath. i had a doe literally 5 ft away from my ladder to my stand downwind of me. i held my breath for as long as i could while she munched on some ferns and went completely unnoticed as soon as id let out for more fresh air about 10 seconds later shed lift her head and look directly at me sniffing i was able to stay motionless and eventually she would go back to her ferns. this went on for 3 more cycles until she backed off and got upwind of me. but as for everything other than my breath, i use the scent killer bar soap and body wash, odorless deoderant, wash my clothes in scent away, and use the earth scented drier sheets. i keep my clothes and everything in a tub filled with stripped pine bows and will spray scent away "fresh earth" before heading out along with doe urine on my boots and doe estrous when the time is right.

Don't quote me on this but I heard from a hunting buddy that the state believes there is roughly 2 million deer or something around there in ny state and something like 30-40 thousand coyotes? If that's the case I have a hard time believing the stats on coyotes. They took out 87 yotes with dogs in a 4 mile stretch where I live 2 yrs ago and now they are back and in force.

Here's a quick and simple question... is the road you speak of that your family/logging company owns land on a public road? If your saying its blocked off then I assume its a private road and I wouldn't be spotlighting off it. If its public then what's the name of it I want to see what's runnin through your woods!! Haha
-
Did you not read how I said its a field that BORDERS the woodlot I hunt which ironically is owned by a lumber company? Of course its private land somebody has to own it.
-
Don't worry I will!! Now I know what's runnin around my land and what to look out for!! I know your first response would be to get a trail camera and which I do but they don't always get everThing ... DURRRR. I USE SPOTLIGHTING AS A WAY TO SCOUT. WITHOUT GOING OUT THAT NIGHT AND NOT NOTICING HOW BUCKS ARE LOCKED ON DOES I WOULD HAVE A HARD TIME FIGURING OUT WHAT PHASE THE RUT IS IN WHEN IN MY STAND ESPECIALLY WITH ALL THE CLEAR NIGHTS AND THE FULL MOON... DURRR (SORRY FOR THE CAPS DIDN'T REALIZE IT USING MY PHONE)
-
Hey bud here's a pic of a 10point I spotted using my SPOTLIGHT 2 nights ago in a field that I DON'T EVEN OWN but borders the woodlot I hunt!! WHEEEEEW I FEEL LIKE SUCH A CRIMINAL
-
i like using the ambient light to navigate at night instead of being constrained to the beam of a flashlight. just my personal preference.

this year has been horrible for me. ive only seen 3 different bucks, one nice 8 point, 4 point, a spike, and a handful of doe. ive been sitting day and night in multiple stands since the season opener. by far the most hours ive ever put into hunting.
