  1. Nice job i hunt 6p as well. Live in westmo, havent seen a deer yet lol
  2. Maybe its becoming part of their genetics that this time of year means anything that feels suspect probably is lol i know thats a bit far fetched but you never know
  3. wow some of you guys pack like your gonna be out there for a week. of course i dont have the opportunity to hunt land that isnt a 5 min walk to the truck or back to the house lol i have a fanny pack but i wear it backwards so its in front of me so i can access everything. aka my cell phone, and occasionally the grunt tube wallet (tags) knife gutting gloves small bottle of scent killer grunt tube rattle bag camo face mask (cool weather one but still only wear it when its cold, i overheat easy) cell phone binos scent wicks (whatever i harvest i want to swab the mouths and other areas to use in future hunts) flashlight with all that my pack feels pretty darn empty, list looks long but its really not all that much. i think im going to start packing some sammies n snacks though, would really like to sit longer but my aching butt and growling stomach always get the best of me. usually sit for only 3 to 3.5 hrs
  4. exactly how i came to my conclusion lol
  5. im not bending any truth. my foodplot is not bait, i didnt plant it to bait. if i wanted to bait id have a bucket of 16% livestock grower under my stand. i planted it because 1, i enjoy the time and effort to plant such a thing 2, the deer/turkeys/squirrels/rabbits etc all benefit from it year round during all stages of its growth 3, what i plant is a great food source during the winter months 4, its an available food source after the farmers harvest their crops 5, its another option just like the crab apples, the farmers corn field, the clover growing in my hay field etc 6, it provides cover 7, and at this point, its naturally a part of the deers habitat, it holds no guarantee of harvesting a deer over, and isnt intended that way like A BAIT PILE IS. a bait pile on the other hand.... 1, short term, generally only used during hunting season and holds no long term benefits what so ever 2, can manipulate the deer to be there when you want them there 3, can be fatal for the deer over winter, or if CWD is present 4, concentrates the deer over the pile 5, doesnt benefit all the wildlife 6, takes no time and effort or thought process other than where to put it 7, is not readily available, does not become a staple of the deers diet, which is unlike my foodplot
  6. just like that cammo you wear thats descented and the gun/bow you use in your treestand increases your odds....
  7. how about in instances when your neighbors poach, trespass from time to time and leave nothing but a few young deer left to breed? reason i ask.....my friend has 160 acres on a hill, has 2 acres of corn and 1 acre of clover planted at the top, has an electric fence around the corn takes it down middle of october, he has about 25 stands, i think there are 2 on the edge of the corn. long story short, since hes planted corn and has the only corn around for miles the deer annihilate the corn through hunting season and through winter. come back in march and your lucky if you find a cob with 1 kernel left on it. hes made a huge impact on the quality of deer because they do stay on his property longer/more often than they used to and dont get blasted by the neighbors, however since he has 160 acres its still difficult for him to harvest his idea of a mature deer(my idea of a good buck and his are about as different as the Dems vs. Reps) because they do wander off from time to time, but atleast hes made a positive impact.
  8. if your so confident hes 150+ why did you ask the forum for their 2 cents? seems like everyone that says otherwise, you insist that they are wrong.
  9. dont be in a hurry to shoot a deer right off the bat. season just started be patient, then you wont be second guessing your shots, it will all come together. i myself am not anticipating much these first few weeks. more or less using this time to scout, and pattern the deer a bit. but i am always ready incase something walks by i just cant pass up.
  10. ive heard the same, but ive also heard the complete opposite. know of a few success stories as well in regards to people leaving ny. i realize am very lucky to live where i live. i am about an hour from everything. adks, lake ontario, finger lakes, tug hill etc. but the area is just so down in the dumps, the weather is dreary most of the year, local economy is non existent just about, then theres the taxes, politics and liberal atmosphere that comes with living in new york. i find there is too much stress living here any way you slice it, especially if your a young person. ive been out west and experienced lots of different areas and would like to some day move somewhere in idaho, montana around yellowstone or the grand tetons within driving distance of salt lake city. tennessee isnt out west but ive been there quite a few times and is actually another place id consider, and if you do your research its one of the best places to retire even over florida and best places to live in general when you consider taxes, cost of living, schools, etc... IMO if i were given the chance to move, i wouldnt hesitate to leave new york. ill sacrifice what ive come to enjoy about the state if it means a healthier life.
  11. I would move to another state givin the opportunity. Central new york or anywhere upstate for that matter is pretty damn expensive in ever aspect. The state is beautiful but its soooo hard to eek out a decent living. Use the web do your research and youll see what im talking about.
  12. I can tell its been a year since i sat in a treestand.... slouching for 3 hrs and having a hairy ass makes for a painful sit hahaha
  13. lord i apologize and be with the starvin pymies down thar in new guinea, i just couldnt help myself.
  14. perrys no peep for me next year..... couldnt be more excited especially since the guy lives a half hour away and makes them out of his home.
  15. haha you saw the same thing i did.. i have chestnut hills website bookmarked and am going to keep seeing if they update the site on where they are sending them this coming spring. the closest one to me was on the new york border in PA maybe 30 miles west of 81. aka 2.5-3 hrs away
  16. lol i was gonna say porcupine... but upon further inspection im drawing a blank
  17. I never hunted in those days, but sounds like something i would implement again if i were dec. Im not convinced at all with ARs but will admit i hunt horns first. I have 2 doe tags this year and plan to fill them early, ive always been told earlier the better. But if ARs were in my wmu i know of a very respectable 1.5 yo buck that wouldnt make it through, hes a. 9 point, and if i hadnt known he was 1.5 i would have a hard time passing him up because as it is right now nice bucks are few and far between. Imo what i see with ARs now is a gradual depletion of good genetics. The 1.5s that made it through last year arent that much ahead of this particular deer and they were pathetic looking as 1.5s. I think they should issue a "whhatever comes first tag". If you bow hunt it would be like an either sex tag but your regular season tag would become a doe tag if you shot a buck during bow. If you just hunt regular its still just a buck tag. Aka one buck per year. And so the state can really get their money if a bow hunter who intends to take a buck with their bow but wants the opportunity to take one with gun, charge like 20 for a buck tag. Just my opinion before i throw my post to the pack of wolves that await.
  18. all this legal stuff is just crap makes me sick.... take responsibility for your own actions and/or stupidity. if you want to hunt on or use someone else's property for whatever reason, your accepting any and all dangers, landowner shouldnt be responsible in anyway. if someone is trespassing, well then you dummy if you slip and fall on a ladder, i hope you break your leg. you shouldnt be there in the first place!
  19. haha thats a 6p wall hanger right there
  20. i picked my bow up for the first time 2 weeks ago and shot from random distances out to beyond 40 yards and EVERY shot was spot on, same as last year. luckily i didnt need to tinker with it, or change anything everything is tight i checked it all before hand. im very confident in my shooting abilities and can easily deter myself from taking a risky shot because i dont ever want to wound a deer or waste a $20 dollar arrow. i enjoy the whole aspect of hunting so because i may pass on a shot that i feel would be risky just means i get to spend another day in the woods... OWW stop twisting my arm it hurts!! i think having confidence is key, and if i dont feel confident ill keep practicing until i do. i think thats where a lot of people fall short, is having confidence in themselves. now just because my bows dialed in the first time i picked it up doesnt mean i wont shoot again until im in the stand. ill shoot many groups a day at random distances, and they are all elevated shots. dont get me wrong i would like to shoot more often, but this summer especially i have been way to busy. normally ill pick up my bow a few times a month and shoot a few groups just to keep that feel/touch alive. i feel like if i do something too much i develop bad habits, if i do it enough to stay fresh and dont over do it everything works out for the better. its like my golf game, i can play a solid 9 holes and anything more i just fall apart.
  21. im 547... thought for sure id be higher than that for some reason
