my "dish to pass" for the deer
mxsmitz201 replied to mxsmitz201's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
that plot was planted with tecomate seed. and holy crap did it take and grow like none other. the stuff was so thick and tall about 18 inches i didnt use any soil tests or add any fertilizers or nothing, just prepped the seed bed threw the seed before a rain and let nature do its thing. i brush hogged it a week and a half ago i thought i screwed myself mowing so late but its come back really nicely. i have noticed that the tecomate seed seems to be superior to the other local brand of food plot seed ive used in the past. my brassicas is tecomate as well, and some of that plot is subsoil where we scraped the topsoil off for my front yard and those areas are thin but the rest is thick about 18-20 inches tall with monster leaves -
i like buck commander, partly because its cool to see one of my favorite athletes (Chipper Jones) take a liking to one of my favorite things to do. plus it seems to be very realistic to me. they are always hunting free range deer, and the deer they do shoot arent always MONSTER deer, plus they screw up about as much as i do and are not afraid to televise it lol

i hunt a total of maybe 10 acres tops, BUT the whole property is a funnel between large crop fields of soybeans, corn and hay fields loaded with clover. here are pics of my small contribution to the local herds diet. Brassicas plot looking north down the swath of trees and brush i cleared for chicory/clover chicory/clover planted this year looking north view from a stand of last years chicory/clover looking south which meshes into the above pic, at the top left of this pic. take a look in the last pic, the entire plot is supposed to be a chicory/clover mix. note in the areas that are a darker green is last years plantings and has no chicory its all clover, all the chicory in the pic was planted this year in areas i cleared out to expand the plot. the deer HAMMERED the chicory

How many of you "Register" your ATV?
mxsmitz201 replied to burmjohn's topic in ATV's , UTV's, Dirtbikes & Snowmobiles
i used to race dirtbikes and wheelers, and bikes are the exception dont come with titles nor do they have to be registered come time to sell it. wheelers are just like snowmobiles. the only reason we ever registered a wheeler was to ride on the truck trails on tug hill. other than that weve never bothered. just made sure when we bought it from someone we never signed the backs of the title or regi to transfer it in our name, so come time to sell it was if the buyer was doing business with the last person to have registered it. -
just the look of the woods was creepy?

i used to work in Yosemite National Park on the trail crew, and we used to hike miles in everyday carrying lots of equipment and elevation was anywhere from 5k to 13k depending on where the work was but all i noticed the first few days was shortness of breath and dizziness if i really over exerted myself. but i will say when i went to colorado for the motocross de nations we were drunk/hungover just about the entire time and drove up mt.evens at 14,000 ft and we alllll felt the altitude sickness especially after going for a swim in the alpine lake thats just below the peak. i think our bodies were so spent from partying that it was 10x worse than it should have been lol

mexicos national bird huh?.... fitting.

only thing i do is spray my boots with doe urine for the walk in, not doe in heat either. with where my stands are and how my property is set up in conjunction with the way the deer move, im hunting the area i just walked through and before i started using the doe urine if a deer would meet my trail it was instantly on the alert. now with the doe urine they dont even think twice and stay calm. i have tried making a mock scrape and using my own urine, it did work, was worth a few pics of bucks but was in an area i dont regularly hunt. i prefer being scent free and silent. partially because i hunt an area that in total besides the fields is about 10 acres of woods and its one big funnel anyway so the deer will be there at one point or another regardless.

i just took up shed hunting last year and i got so excited when i thought i found a shed, turned out it was someones old rattling antler but one time in ROTC we were doing land nav at fort davis mass and we were walking through some of the thickest brush ive ever encountered and fell face first on a realllll nice shed of an 8 pointer. almost took my eye out haha but thats a really nice pile of sheds, must have eyes like a hawk

i can see my neighbors horses in the pasture from one of the stands i hunt about 130 yds away and they make darn good spotters for deer that are in the thick brush that runs around their pasture. its nice, like having 6 sets of eyes and ears with the plus side that the deer arent afraid of the horses.

walking in the dark and getting to your spot that you scouted out weeks before on your own land, get settled in, and as your eyes adjust to the dark and can make out objects.... you realize your sitting 10ft away from ANOTHER HUNTER! True story. Why he didnt speak up as soon as I got there is beyond me..... dont think ill ever figure that one out.

i rubber-banded a contour hd helmet camera on my stabilizer it worked awesome!! didnt get much video cuz i didnt see much last year but it definitely worked flawlessly. check out the contours they are VERY robust and easy to use and cylindrical in shape, not like the GOpro and square... dunno how the heck i would mount one of those on my bow

Clearing Land? Tips Tricks Anything?
mxsmitz201 replied to burmjohn's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
ive been clearing trees and brush for years now with my new holland compact tractor (boomer series 1630) with a bucket and almost all attachments out there. ill tell you right now you dont want to cut the trees period until they are on the ground. you need to get in at all angles and really work the sob especially if its a maple tree, they seem to be the most stubborn, where as cherry trees are easy as pie thanks to a shallow root system. i dont know what your kubotas size is or capabilities is with this work or what your woods looks like but the 1630 is 26hp i believe and can handle with out digging around the trunk trees between 8-12 inches in diameter and ive been clearing areas that used to be a field over 40 yrs ago so its not like im clearing old growth monster trees. its just so nice getting the roots and tree all in one without leaving stumps. when im done clearing ill float the bucket and scrape off any debri and start tilling away -
what did you do saw off a hefty branch of cedar and stick it into the ground? if so, i dont believe i have any cedar trees around unless i nab one from my neighbors hedgerow haha so im going to my local hardware store and buying a 4x4 cedar post and clipping some cedar branches and wiring them up to the post for licking branches.

mxsmitz201 replied to burmjohn's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
a few dinks for some (justin). but a few of the best ive seen where i hunt haha. just wish i could get them all on camera, ive seen a few really nice ones other than these in my spotting scope off the back porch but they wont pass my trailcam so i can compare them all lol -
i hunt vernon center and around skyline drive. lots of nice deer that way. it amazes me the difference in quantity and quality of deer from my home location right near rte 5 and just a mile up skyline makes haha
-
i hunt oneida county right along the rte 5 corrider near vernon/westmoreland and i had counted 61 shots before 7:30, I thought it was comparable to other seasons.
-
Heard my first shot at 6:24am which was quite close by actually. I looked down my barrel right after the shot to see if i could make heads or tails of my iron sights.. not a chance. cant imagine using a scope. where i hunt legal shooting time would be 6:57!!! By 7 o'clock i had counted 32 shots
