Technology Thirty years ago if I was to wear my four layers it would be six inches thick in all directions, heavy layers of wool and other natural fibers. Now I'm wearing skin tight space age plastic-fantastic layers made by robots. It's like a third of the thickness and the weight at double the heat retention.

My outermost layer has to stop the wind, that's the trick for me. No matter how many I layers I pack on, if the outermost layer is not a windbreaker, even the smallest breeze will wisk away your heat, slowly but enough over time to freeze your ass. I wear a skin tight synthetic base layer, something like UnderArmour base top, then over that a looser synthetic top from Nike. Over that I wear an old polyester knit sweater, it's loose and full of holes, but it serves to create space to trap warm air. Over that goes a fleece jacket that zips up high around the neck and that has fitted sleeves (to trap more air). Finally over everything I put on my windbreaker - this season I'm using a Gorka 4 suit, it's a little noisy but it's very tough and it definitely stops the wind. Even when there's no wind, there's wind. Keep moving air away from you, stay warm.

Are we screening refugees?
Black Bellamy replied to Mr VJP's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Newsflash! We have always taken refugees who have come from countries at war who arrived with minimal paperwork. These people as always are screened by the State Department, and if you think Obama has any role in that screening then you're ignorant. We have taken in people from Burma, from Somalia, Sudan, Nepal, dozens of countries. I understand racists and xenophobes will always imagine a terrorist under their bed but the rest of us can't really help you with your fears. -
Crazy hunting tactic that has worked (or almost worked)?
Black Bellamy replied to sampotter's topic in Deer Hunting
That's the jelly doughnut that brought in my very first deer. I was walking from the truck to the ground blind, scattering old doughnuts behind me every so often. I settle in and fifteen minutes later a buck shows up. He's following the doughnut trail; he bends down and grabs one, stands up, and I drill him through the chest. When I walked up to him he had half the doughnut still in his mouth. I was actually looking for bear. -
If no one stole my stand I'll be in that, sitting 50 yards north of the New Jersey state line. If they did steal it, I'll be in a smaller, less comfortable one, same location. And that's how opening day pretty much goes for me every year

Here in Orange Co, it's supposed to be 34 degrees with 5mph west winds and 32% sky cover at 7am, going up to 42 degrees by noon. Smells like a perfect opener to me. So far.

I'm pretty sure I had a CT scan at some point in the past - I remember white machines and weird noises, but I was drunk a lot back then, so maybe I'm just remembering the bathroom at the club.

For Android phones, go to https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager From there you can set various options to find your phone if you lose it.

Yeah, I'm from Warwick and I see a lot of deer. Lots and lots of deer. But yes, it's pretty much all private land.

It is a folly to mess with time. When they dig up our bones thousands of years of now, they will refer to us as the Clock Watcher People.

I use MotionX GPS app ( https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/motionx-gps/id299949744?mt=8) but I have an iPhone - I don't see anything they make for the Android. I don't use any of the hunting-specific GPS apps because it's too much chaff for me. I just want to record, save, and share my trails and stand locations, no other fancy shmancy functionality needed.

That image is supposed to be delicious.png Specifically http://huntingny.com/forums/public/style_extra/sharelinks/delicious.png That's why it opened a delicious app page when clicked on. If everyone is seeing something like that then it means the site forum software is serving the wrong image instead of the right one. If only one user is seeing it I suspect a caching issue on that users machine.

My work requires me to be available 24/7/365, but it doesn't require set office hours. I've worked from tropical Florida beaches and snowy Adirondack cabins. I've worked from my tree stands. I go hunting whenever I'm not physically required to be somewhere else

Brady Calls NRA "Terrorists"
Black Bellamy replied to Mr VJP's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Yeah LOL indeed. Apparently if anyone disagrees with you they are a liar, effeminate, and a drug addict. If one of your coworkers disagrees with your positions, do you attack them like that as well? How about strangers in the store? Your neighbors? No? Don't feel like getting punched in the face I guess, right? Isn't internet anonymity wonderful? You can unleash your inner jackass and no one can do anything about it -
Having second thoughts on the climber.......
Black Bellamy replied to zeus1gdsm's topic in General Hunting
The thing about using climbers is you have to understand their limitations. If you don't have time to prepare the area, as is the case with most climber setups, then yes you will frequently find your sight lines obstructed. You need to be able to adjust the height on the fly. If you don't get a good setup you need to climb higher or lower, or maybe go to a different nearby tree. Yes you will make noise and can spook a good deer but on the other hand you will spend 4 hours sitting in a stand and when that buck does show up you won't be able to get a good shot. A lot of people carry too much stuff, myself included when I was first starting out. All those gizmos make things really convenient, but then you wind up humping 40lbs of gear on top of your regular outfit. If it's something you don't use every time you're up there, you probably don't need it. If it's made of metal, see if you can get a plastic or nylon substitute. You're just as safe up there with a lightweight basic harness than with a heavy vest with metal buckles. Metal hooks? Try nylon straps. If you have a big and heavy climber, you will be more stable and comfortable. But a lightweight climber is much easier to pack in and out, especially if you're in thick cover. Every branch that snags your climber delays you and has a chance to damage something. Like I mentioned in another thread and others in this one, I leave my heavy climber in the woods for the season. If it gets stolen, oh well, it was cheap and I got my use out of it. I cover it with leaves and branches and padlock it to a tree. It's a good feeling to get to the climber in the morning all fresh and dry instead of being all worn out from carrying it. And if I get to it and it's gone, then I'll still hunt back to my vehicle and grab the other climber -
For it to be effective, the GPS tracker needs a power supply and a cellular connection. Otherwise you're severely limited in range. So you're looking at a device like the GTU 10 which is about 3x1.5x1 inches, so while not huge, it would definitely be very noticeable attached to a treestand. Second, in addition to its size, you're limited by battery life. If it's really cold the battery might die in a week or two, and many people are away from their stands for longer than that. Third, you need to be in an area that has cell coverage, which might not happen due to the terrain or just being out in the boonies. Fourth, these devices are frequently more expensive than the stand. Why double down on your loss? So yes, people have thought about it Just not practical is all.

Yeah, I had a 32lbs climber that I bought when I was first starting out shooting from a stand. I got it cheap, I think like $80 because it was so damn heavy. I still have it, but I carry it in on opening day and carry it out when the season is over. It's just too damn heavy for daily carry-in and carry-out. I don't like to be all super sweaty from carrying it, and then extra tired from climbing it. Not a good way to start the hunting day, all sore and wet. When I'm not there it's padlocked to the base of the tree and covered in leaves. If someone steals it, well I got my use out of it and good luck carrying it out, hope you don't trip and break something I did have a bear chew up the seat a little, but it's still usable. Sometimes I'll relocate it a bit to a better lane, but it generally stays in the woods. I did wise up and buy a lightweight climber. It's not as comfortable for sure, but it's 14lbs and small, so I carry it everywhere no problem. Yeah it did cost me close to four bills, but it was worth it for the utility I got from it. I can't imagine lugging my old heavy stand to some of the prime spots I used my Lone Wolf in.

What time do you usually end your morning hunt
Black Bellamy replied to Chef's topic in Deer Hunting
I sit in the first stand until about 10am, then I get down and stalk for a couple of hours until I arrive at my second stand. Then I climb up and hunt until dark. -
My old Cablevision (TV+Internet) bill was $182.00 /mo I bought: Three Roku 2 devices for each TV ($70 x 3 = $210) DTV antenna $150.00 (Antenna + cables + install kit) That's a $360 one time expense. Then I subscribed to: Hulu subscription $7.99/mo Sling subscription $20.00/mo Cablevision internet subscription $29.90/mo ($24.95 + $4.95 modem) Now my monthly charges are $57.89 /mo I am saving $124.00 /mo. It took me three months to recoup the $360 initial outlay. I would cut out Sling, but my wife insists on having Food Network, the Cooking Channel, and HGTV.

My yard is full of them! I have a 50x25 driveway and there is exactly one 10x6 area where I can park the car without getting dinged.

Ahh the internet phone. The DOJ announces something - http://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/launch-strong-cities-network-strengthen-community-resilience-against-violent-extremism Some site picks it up http://noisyroom.net/blog/2015/10/01/us-attorney-general-us-cities-join-un-to-create-global-police-force-intiative/and adds a little "circumventing the constitution" blurb without backing that statement up at all or explaining it. Then Gellar uses that reference in her first sentence here http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2015/10/02/obama-administration-and-un-announce-global-police-force-to-fight-extremism-in-u-s/, more nebulous yet dire warnings about how "sharia compliant" the UN is, words like "ominous" etc yet she doesn't explain anything at all. Again, nothing back up her assertions except more assertions. Then the Federalistpapers picks it up, more words like "subjugation" but no explanations, no arguments, no reasoning. Just a link back to Breitbart. Now you post it here and it becomes "UN police presence", extrapolating every claim made before, but again, no substantiation, no proof, no actual argument, just links to pages with more links to pages with more links, each site more shrill and alarmist than the one before. So tell me VJP, you obviously read the same document I did, right? Is your fear of the UN so great that you resist any and all initiatives and efforts where the UN is even mentioned at all? Because this initiative is not run by the UN at all. It's run by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, which is NOT part of the UN and not affiliated with it. The AG announced this effort in front of the UN. Like she wanted to tell the whole world, maybe get a few more cities on board, and what's a great way to reach everyone? Give a speech in front of the UN. Which to you means that the UN peacekeeping forces will be directing traffic in front of your house towards the nearest UN concentration camp, right? So if you look at the actual press release from DOJ, it very plainly explains that 25 major cities will pool information. That's pretty much the extent of the initiative. So like instead of one city learning from experience and then putting that information into a silo, it will be shared among the others. Please note that there is not a SINGLE reference to enforcement, police presence, troops, anything even remotely close to that. Instead we have: safeguard the rights of local citizens and communities enable cities to learn from one another develop best practices build social cohesion and community resilience benefit from an online repository of municipal-level good practices Sounds all good to me, I want to fight terrorists through information sharing, don't you? Or is your hatred of the UN so strong that you will prevent cities from sharing information about terrorist methods "just because"? So to recap: The AG announces something in front of the UN. Clickbait websites turn this non-event into an ominous sign the UN is deploying troops in their neighborhoods. People like you spread the word with alarmist posts. No one has any proof, just warm wet stains in their pants from pissing themselves over the coming UNpocalypse. Oh yeah, to answer your post title, NO and NO. Try thinking for yourself instead of swimming in some conspiratorial link fog.

I don't know, probably his ability to understand germ theory and risk mitigation. Taking unnecessary risks isn't a sign of manliness and neither is laughing at those who take care of themselves. I already walk into the woods with a loaded firearm full of other hunters with same. I walk across frozen swamps, climb through rocky ravines, sit on a swaying tree two stories up, I gut and drag deer in near total darkness, and once in a great while I get into a staring contest with a 600lb ball of unpredictability. Why would I go ahead and expose myself to any more risk is beyond me, especially since mitigating that risk takes two dollars and maybe half an ounce of portage.
