  1. I'd say it's a good morning to be a duck, but it's not at all, at least in the western zone. I love the smell of powder burning and ducks smacking the water. Loading up the truck now... Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  2. After tonight I'm off for a week, duck hunting Saturday AM, then deer the rest of the week. Good thing I just put a blind up on the lease, that'll make those rainy days better. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  3. Emphasis on making sure it's a coyote at night. We've had everything under the sun come in to distress calls. Even fawns can trick you sometimes with their low eyes. My biggest advice would be to try and block off the downwind side when possible, whether it be a pond/swamp or open field you can easily scan. They circle a lot and you won't even know you got winded. At least if it's open you might get a crack before they bust you. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  4. If there's a gun range nearby don't let it persuade you from returning. The deer are used to it. We used to have deer come out 120 yds behind the trap shooting houses while we were shooting. It's just like anything else, it becomes normal to them. Doesn't make for a peaceful sit though... Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  5. Bailed on tonight. Too hot, too many mosquitoes, don't want to rush to process one either. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  6. Beautiful morning, cell cam assured me that I picked the wrong stand, again. Never had this much trouble putting eyes on a big doe early on. Small bucks galore. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  7. Whatever works for you. I'd much rather sit in my climber than any hang on. I can sit comfortably all day in my Summit, I can't in a hang on. I never clear anything, if it's too thick to shoot I just do what I can. The spot I've been hunting is pretty thick. With practice you can be all but silent in a climber also. When I left this morning I climbed down, packed up and left with 2 deer 75-80 yds away and never spooked them. Rarely can I not find a tree within 20 yds of where I want to be. Climber works best for me. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  8. Saw 6 deer this AM, small bucks and fawns mostly. I'm probably done until Monday now. Chris Stapleton concert to go to tonight so no hunting the PM. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  9. That's the main reason I use my climber 90% of the time, I have a pile of hang ons but seldom use them. It's too easy to get lazy with hung stands and sit them for the simple reason of being easier. I'm constantly moving, adjusting, plus it keeps the deer guessing a bit when you're in a different area constantly. Less stand burn out. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  10. 2 bucks and a fawn now... Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  11. Back out, crotch horn in range right now. If I could add all of the small buck inches together so far from this season on one deer I'd have a dandy! Hoping this fella does something dumb... Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  12. Starting to second guess my idea to sit in a swamp. Pretty sure I'm sitting directly above the mosquito hatchery for 7F... The water is literally moving with larvae... Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  13. Not even a teaser pic!? Rude... Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  14. I bailed, it started raining pretty good. I got 200yds down the road and something jumped out of the grass in the ditch and I thought it was a fox at first, turns out it was a fawn, couldn't have been 15lbs, all spots, it ran down someone's driveway and when I got up there to see there were 2 fawns, both ridiculously small and a big doe running off. For those fawns to be that small they must've been born in August? If that's even possible... Poor guys don't stand a chance. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  15. Saw 5 this AM, just had 3 come by at 25 yds. One tiny fawn and two 1.5yr olds that just weren't big enough. I've been covered up in deer this weekend, just not the ones I'm looking for... Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  16. That's a pretty good little joint! Been there a few times. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  17. Another baby... He just bedded down at 25 yds Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  18. Mosquitoes are awful tonight. Back in until dark. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  19. 2 more small bucks and a fawn this morning. My close to home spot is a buck nursery this year, shy of two good ones. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  20. Good first sit tonight, let a young but wide 6pt go at 3 yds, had some fawns around. Then walked to within 8ft of a fawn in my way out, cute little bugger. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  21. Exactly right, deer aren't shy of light. If you spook deer it's not because of the light. Ever been spotlighting before? You can blast them with 1 million lumens and they don't run, it's the car stopping that spooks them. I often look around an area for 15 minutes if it's new to me with my light blasting anywhere my head looks and kill more than most. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  22. I thought I had great vision, how are there so many people walking around the woods in complete black?? I call BS, either that or our definition of "dark" is alot different. Why would you risk tripping or getting a stick in the eye? Even in the winter when I can clearly see with the moon reflection I always have a light in, for safety reasons. I always use a light, usually white on my headlamp. Does it scare deer? No more than walking by them does, which you're going to do anyways? I walk past deer often with a light on, as long as you keep pace and don't head right toward them they usually just watch. If deer were so repelled by light they wouldn't be getting ran over by cars so much. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  23. Great morning for plug chomping salmon. Boated 2 limits, kept 3 for my winter steelhead supply of eggs. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
  24. I think it's best just to say we all want different things out of hunting. We are all at different stages throughout life. I grew up hunting less than prime hunting public land and I was tickled to shoot a 6 PT with a rifle and so was my father. Now I have some real good ground to hunt and my standards rose. It's not that I didn't always want access to mature bucks, I just didn't always have it. Now that I do, that's what I like to target. Now that being said, I killed a 135" buck two years ago with my bow, and on opening weekend I shot a smaller 6 PT with my rifle on the same ground. Why? Because I was happy with it. I wanted one more meat deer and was hoping for a doe but they eat the same. I'm all for hunting mature deer and I prefer it, but not at the expense of my hunting traditions and roots. I'm not too proud. I let a lot of deer walk every year, and it feels right, I'll trip the trigger. I love big bucks, like most but it's not the end all be all. I also love fishing, I've upped my standards and expectations there too, but that's not to say I don't love catching bluegills under floats in the spring. When we deem everyone else be on our level we do everyone a disservice. Here's a buck on our lease I'd love to meet up with this fall... Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk
