The reconyx that offers pic transmission via SIM is $1,200+. You are talking about apples and oranges. Can't compare MMS/Cell cams to non-cell cams.

Hunting in Southeast Steuben County - Lindley?
phade replied to Joint Venture's topic in General Hunting
I haven't hunted there but I drive through there a lot. Should be decent hunting, but probably not huge numbers of deer, at least from what I can see form the road. -
Good and bad about the camera if you don't take into account the price. The only benefit to this is the option for high-res imagery at a per pic situation. Everything else is status quo with what the Code Black offers. I don't know whether the 2014 Code Black will offer the High Res option yet. The whole "go through us" advertisement is for those who can't follow directions. I'm sure it'll sell some people though. Quite frankly, I'm not sure why people drool over it other than the high-res option. It does nothing that the Code Black cant otherwise. I think this cam would be MUCH more realistic in the $350-400 range. $600 is insane to pay that much.

My case, I think I get the low totem pole syndrome because they already have my money and I'm locked in.

If you want NY specific info, the best option if NY Outdoor News. NY Fish and Game pales in comparison. It does offer a lot of stories about places to go public wise and some hunt/harvest/kill stories. But, they to me, seem to repeat the same stories year in and year out about the "where and when to go" topics.

Been seeing the news about the shortage and prices going up, especially in the Midwest. Looks like the issue has reached wNY. I prepay my propane in the summer. I called to have them stop by and fill-up my tank. They told me they were as far as 7 days out from being able to provide the propane. I thought that was a bit much given the fact I prepay. Certainly understand the shortage issue, but sheesh....a full week.

Neat sight for sure, but like with any item such as this, if it were THAT good, it would be on many more bows by now.

Good for you taking a stand. Nice to see. Im sure DKS knew a few people would, and they could spare you as a customer for long term business health. Again, nice of you to make that decision for your moral compass. But they didnt stab anyone in the back. They didnt customer wise at least. I know they burned a few bridge with manyfacturers.

Ive lived in enough states and multiple countries...countries, not counties, to know upstate NY could be made much better simply by lawmakers and other govt employees. Mismanagement abounds and it goes from top to bottom and bottom to top. This state is handcuffed like California.

Totally unrelated, but I believe the integration of iPads and other technology is actually a smart move. Teaching cursive writing and the like is not how the future will pan out. I agree with all else whole-heartily.

Bottom line is what it is...the market bears it as the rule of the game so to speak. There are not many companies who don't fall victim to that rule. Those who proclaim not to - you know, the kind that says "we won't sacrifice the greater good or helping the community, etc. and so on" are saying/doing that precisely to improve their bottom line. It all starts and stops there.

Nothing like a big buck kill flying under the radar for quite some time.

He did take pics in the field, but that's not what this thread is about. It's about a very nice buck and hunter fortunate enough to take him. -
They knew exactly how it was going to bite them in the rear...that's why they did it. They knew there'd be a short-term blip and the opportunity cost was weighed appropriately. Their financials are the best within their business segment. Sports Authority can't sniff their rear-end, BPS, Cabelas, and Gander are only partial competitors, and Wal-Mart generally only focuses on low-end gear. The fact you predict a tsunami in the retail space actually proves my point if it were to come true. Why? Because DKS is the BEST POSITIONED sports retail company. Stores that will be in trouble are the smaller scale stores that cannot ride out any waves within the economy or the stores that are in trouble financially. In fact, DKS has an expansion model that is so perfectly suited to poor economic times, that it came out of the "recession" or whatever you want to call it in better shape than any other within its business segment. It'll do it again if there is a "tsunami." Business decisions are based on the environment and balancing shareholder return. Just because a politically-based decision seems to ruffle your feathers, in the end, it relates to how that "impacts" their bottom line. And guess what, they were right. Now you get to deal with a whole new chain of stores dedicated to the hunting/fishing pursuits, in addition to DKS, and Golf Galaxy, etc. The reality you preach that there is some danger to DKS that will make it fall from grace, simply is not true. DKS is actually about as good as it gets right now. The barriers to entry in the marketplace are not only expensive, but also complex. DKS enjoys economy of scale, logistics precision, and a super strong financial sheet. Are they the best thing since sliced bread? No. But, they're the best within the sporting goods industry from a stock/business perspective. Gander had to go private or face a nuclear meltdown, BPS is a joke, and Cabelas is sound, but having trouble because they can't keep their identity. Notice how they are making smaller stores now? Why is that? Because they can't compete with the revenue per square foot of places such as DKS. And, guess who that 500lb gorilla is that just jumped in head-first into their business model, designing similar sized stores. One that has big time money to pump into it. DKS.

While I certainly understand where people come from who want "great" pictures, this guy is a normal hunter. A relatable one, and it was refreshing to see. I don't think he was all that concerned about magazine quality photos, but he did take some that were in the field. -
As much as I am a supporter of the 2A, I don't really get the hype some people worked up over DKS. Nobody wanted to seem them pull certain firearms, but they have a fiscal responsibility to shareholders and a business decision was made - repeat - a business decision - not a government. Some places liked to tout the "reduced sales" but anyone with a business acumen knows they weighed the risk value appropriately as evidenced by their financial sheet today. You can't treat a private enterprise like a government.

Family roots is really the only thing that keeps me here. Nice state, but there are other equally nice states with oftentimes better hunting/fishing/recreation and career opportunities.

Good luck. Glad I don't ever have to go through that.

Tax breaks for renters?
phade replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
While I think it is junk of an idea, renter do pay property taxes via rent. It's just built into the cost. -
That's ALOT of food plot acreage you are talking about for a first year plot plan. Whatever you decide to do, hopefully you find that balance with time investment vs. payoff. Food plots are great, but spending the time to do so overwhelmingly vs. setting up for the kill on a handful of top-lot bucks on those properties is a balancing act. Generally, people get caught up with plots than actually killing the deer. Some people get the enjoyment out of it, and that's fine. But, the lowest hole in the bucket isn't food plots in most cases. I'd think any scouting you do post-season that will reveal most of what you need to bank on come fall, will be impacted by the plotting, either via movements, changed bedding habits, etc. I'd want to select offer a couple plots in locations that are clear winners, but not do so many that I wasted my scouting. Plus, I think with a full season under your belt with the bow season and growing season, you'll better understand natural deer movements and bedding at that time of year to better place stands and plots, etc. Sounds like you are eager to get out there. I'd inventory now, having every game camera out there to see what is in the area and then do the same in August and watch to see what doesn't disperse. Take the top handful of bucks and make that your target goal to ensure you are not holding out on something that doesn't exist.
-
Slow and steady that first year. I'd opt to not change much so you can better understand natural movements before trying to manipulate deer beyond ambush sites for this fall.

Advice on stand sites for small land parcel im hunting.
phade replied to dead2rights's topic in Deer Hunting
Lots to consider....depending on the actual property lines, that place looks dynamite. The number of potential beds, the funnels, the creek, there's not much more to ask for there. -
I'm not sure I'd stress over the mowing just yet. If they are small and located in the woods, you may not need to worry about it with browse pressure. Mowing vs. spraying for weed control is a 6 in one/half dozen in the other scenario. Pros and cons to both. I'd actually consider going the cheap route and using a weak RU solution once or twice AFTER a growing season June/August. The clover can make it through OK with the right mix. 1 oz/gal is a ballpark to consider. It will stunt the clover no doubt, but it'll come back pretty clean and strong. Maybe just one spraying to be safe. I think you can probably let the plot grow as need be and be OK the first season, unless you have serious weed issues.
