Don't know why Bushnell has always had night illumination issues, the rest of the camera is pretty quality, although I dislike washout day photos, though useful enough.

I have a few with one stabilizer bar and a few with two. Two makes a world of difference in stability imo, esp. if you have a few larger guys.

The Shot Heard Throughout N.Y.
phade replied to hunter49's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
West New York has a nice ring to it. -
rut-active bucks and the young deer going through the first winter are the most impacted, no doubt. I've got pics of earlier shedding of antlers than I have ever seen. The earliest I have ever seen or picked up a shed was MZ weekend and the last weekend of gun depending on the season dates. This year I have several bucks shed on cam in the first ten days of December. While shedding isn't a firm sign, I do know that stressed bucks can shed earlier. I'm sure the old deer may have trouble too, but probably such a small percentage of the herd, that it's not a macro-factor.

Deer have been hit harder than normal here just based off of my informal observations. I noticed earlier yarding than any other season. Plus, my apple tree in the yard has been hit hard with activity, which in most years, rarely gets attention because of the dogs and the proximity to the house. Its very early as said, but it's been tougher than normal in stretches.

It also helps if you have a really big guy on standby who can lift them without a care in the world.

No apparent latch change between 2012 and 2013 - however, I can't recall a 2013 latch breaking. The cams seal tight to begin with, but the 2012s had a few cams where the lock hole didn't line up correctly or if there was enough wiggle room to line-up correctly, and the user wasn't paying attention, it could break the latch. I broke one of mine and my FIL broke his within the same weekend. I've owned at least 15 2012s thus far, and those were the only two I had that issue with. Knowing to be careful shutting the cam has helped. 2013s...same design, but no latch issue I guess. I think they made a minor change to it that isn't readily apparent, because they close much more smooth. Late year 2013...Code Blacks got a new latch system. All 2014 models will have it. This will likely fix a couple issues people reported back to them. Cams aren't perfect, but fixing what is found to need improvement is a good sign for a company. Haven't heard of too many stuck filters with Coverts...heard of maybe enough to count on one hand. Glad they took care of it. Mechanically, these cams work well for the moolah. The 2014 lineup seems interesting. Some specific use cams coming out. 2013 deals on leftovers will be starting soon.

Ladder stands are certainly not what I call mobile. But, I keep a few put together, minus the sections, ready to go in-season. I've killed deer plenty of times on ladders hung mere hours before the shot.

It depends on the type of tree, the rootstock, etc. That could be a great price or it could be a "not worth it" price. I have heard of Blake's Pride but never been around it. Probably a good fit for the area, but as far as characteristics, no idea.

I agree. Up until this issue, he was in my opinion the only right side person to win the white house. I don't think there's another person who can - esp if Hillary gets the nod.
-
I don't buy into the cover issue with hang-ons or movement for that matter. I can see hang-ons for short term and mobility, and for certain trees where a hang-on can attach with angular adjustments. Half of our ladders are in clumps. two man ladders suck for moving, yes.

Yes, radio show was yapping about it and they got callers saying they sat through his classes. So, if he is/was an instructor, at that point, I'm even more convinced it wasn't about a lack of training/experience, etc. It was a lack of judgment and he gets what he deserves.

Governor Announces Support for Crossbows in NY
phade replied to Tinlodge's topic in CrossBow Hunting
A hunting organization wanting to thank AC. Sheesh. I don't care if he offered support. Big picture thinking trumps a bone thrown to the dogs in this situation. Just a fine example of special interest trying to weasel through the legal system and politics to get what they want at any cost. I'm on the fence on xbow use, but I REALLY dislike this organization now that they ask for people to thank AC. -
That boy is definitely blind. When you can't see the tapetum lucidum like that...he's blind. Either his eye was damaged or he was born without it and thus blind. Don't feel bad if you can't shoot a half-blind buck. Others in the area haven't been able to kill him either, lol. I see right at the 127-30 mark. Mass and his beams help nudge the score on this one. Those racks that lift high off the skull tend to score slightly longer than many think because of that.

I have more than 40 ladder stands in action. The majority are the basic 15' stands from Dick's. These have worked out well, and I have shot quite a few deer from them. Some people really dislike the smaller platforms on the basic stands. I don't find them an issue because the rails leading up to the seat actually act as a way to "lock" your legs in by pushing against them. When moving to legit 19-20' platform height stands - you need to do some research. Be sure you are looking at platform height. Advertised height can go by platform, seat, or rail height...big difference. Some of the new basic stands have gone to the slimmer designed rails. I don't care for using these along with an extension to use at 19-20'. Especially as gun and late season comes into play. Bigger boots can at times become a bit of a hassle to climb with. The regular width rails allow for plenty of room. They are fine early season and at 15'. The extra length, even with another stabilizer, allows some room for bowing, and that's where I find the combination of lack of room and some "wiggle" to be concerning. I find costs of stands go up big time over the regular 15' level basics or the basic with rail/rests. Lots of time it's the engineering - going from square tubing to D or round or double rails. Cheapest way will likely be the basic or the basic with rail/rests along with an extension kit. Most of the ones with the rails/rests have platforms that go back to the tree...and those in my opinion, give you extra room when up higher. To be honest, I'm not really sure why people use permanent position hang-ons. If they are staying in the same place...get a freaking ladder. The premonition that deer know them...lame. That's on the hunter, not the stand. I've got videos this year of me literally dancing in the stand with bucks bedded behind me, mature bucks within bow range, etc. Some people blame their inability to hang a stand and also their movement on equipment (sort of like a bow shot). Hang-ons have their place, and really, that for more short-term or mobile set-ups. Permanent positions (funnels, known bedding, etc. etc.)...ladder stands. Buy a large pack of electrical tape. Wrap the inner-joining ends with one layer before inserting into the next rail. It will largely eliminate the sound. Tight fit, but it helps immensely. Also tape any clips tight (for the sections). This is more important on those taller stands with more flexing movement. *Edit One other thing - DO NOT buy stands with seats made out of netting or other similar material if you can. Only buy stands with the metal seats. The netting ones are comfy no doubt, but at some point, the stand will outlast the seat, and a replacement will be tough to find.

Apparently he was a hunting/safety course instructor back in the day.

A big old buck who is blind in one eye.

Shawshank Redemption - one of those movies that's on TV often and it's hard to change the channel once you come across it. Get busy living, or get busy dying. Jaws. When a movie can make you think twice next time you step into the water - it's done its job. I like WWII and war movies, largely because I watched them a lot with my grandfather and father. Midway was always a big one for me, same for Tora Tora Tora. Top Gun...first movie I can remember seeing with my Dad. Lastly, Armageddon. I know. Horrible film. It came out when I was in high school, but I realized it had special powers. I went to the movies 5x to see this film, with 5 different ladies, including a couple college girls. That film must have had clothing deterrent or something in it. Stuff just flew off after that film, lol. Let's just say that movie holds a special place in my....heart.

Pink or purple pics on a red IR cam often means the filter is stuck or sticking. Certain BTCs have the issue where the cam acts up in the cold temps. Most perform fine. Your filter issue could be cold related. Might not be....but given the conditions, not out of the picture.
-
Covert Mp6 Black is a great first time cam.
-
Its a known issue with Bushnells in those cold temps. It'll happen again.
-
Use the half power illumination on videos too (720). Never really noticed any quality difference with the full power and better battery life.

For those saying it's not a lack of judgment, I just can't see the rationale, but whatever. In a restaurant/bar/tavern...lunch, busy enough there's a family with a baby in there. You decide to pull out a weapon you carry on a permit (assuming concealed) to show a friend. Not use it in self defense, but to merely show it off, in public. Then you "accidentally" shoot yourself and said friend. If that doesn't show a lack of judgment, I don't know what does. You can't fix stupid.
-
I'm not spending time on it until other people have wasted theirs to vet the process. User testing be damned.
-
it takes more time than what I want to spend when some delta bravo is threatening my life. Those guns are designed with no safety on purpose for the most part. You really have to have a lack of judgment to have one discharge.
