Here's a photo I took this past weekend as I spent a few days tent camping and mostly bass fishing in the Adirondacks. I had all my gear and a cooler in my 12 canoe with room to spare. The seat I added this year made for all day casting comfort.

In my opinion, the canoe is the easy choice for a versatile fishing craft. I have an 12 Old Town "Still water" model which weighs 56lbs and is a bit wider in the middle than most canoes and stable enough to stand up and fish in calm water. Although they no longer make the still water, there are similar ones out there. One of the best purchases I ever made for sure. I can load it easily by myself for solo trips, it has plenty of room for gear and we've even loaded it up with camping gear and paddled out on Adirondack lakes to camp and fish a few days. Very comfortable with two people on a fishing trip. You can have a big cooler, minnow bucket, anchor, tackle boxes with room to spare. You can add rod holders and a folding chair to your canoe and have a really comfortable fishing rig. When I paddle alone, I just sit in the front seat facing toward what is the back of the canoe, as the front seat is more centered and stable for one. It's great for Adirondack lakes or drifting slow moving streams and rivers. Those fishing kayaks look nice but I think I'd feel too confined and limited on gear.

In Hand? Hung? Or Just Laying To The Side?
genesee_mohican replied to grampy's topic in Deer Hunting
Usually hung up close where I can grab it with out moving a lot. Other times I'll have it in my hand for hours on end, but it get's tiring on all day hunts. -
when do you start getting serious with trailcams?
genesee_mohican replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
I keep some out year round because it's just fun to get pictures of wildlife. I've gotten some of my best pictures/video during June n July when nature seems to be peaking with newborn animals. I have sets that try to target bobcat and bear which can be a challenge to get a good photo of. And it's always nice to see what the deer are doing year round. I have a few older bucks around the areas that I hunt, and I'll be looking to get a photo of them too, so I will be putting more cams out next weekend. -
You will start seeing fresh rubs in late September. Bucks antlers are covered in velvet now and growing rapidly until about Aug 10th when they begin to harden as days get shorter. That's about the time when my thoughts become more consumed with the upcoming season once again.

Wow, time sure does fly by and it doesn't seem like that was 25 years ago! I saw him at the Rochester Sportsman's show and that was pretty neat. I purchased one of his tee shirts, think I wore it once and then squirreled it away. 25 years sure goes by fast. smh

A very loud crotch rocket goes down this country road a few times a week, going as fast as they can. The level of noise is annoying and I'm not sure why they don't get a ticket for noise and going that fast on a country road where any critter can pop out onto the road at anytime is not wise. I still ride, but we always hear about riders hitting deer each year so I go slow and am on high alert.

Stevie was one of the great performers and so talented. Such a shame, he was taken away much too soon. Here's one of my favorite full concerts to watch: Note: best listened to in evening w your choice of drinks:

My favorite and go to stand is the Millennium M 100 U. At 11 lbs it's easy to pack in and easy to pull up and set. The seat is very comfortable. I like to sit all day a few times a year and this stand makes it much more enjoyable.

Some of the hunting shows on TV will be rifle hunting over a beautiful crop field surrounded by undisturbed bedding areas. As the hunter and camera man sit and watch several deer out in the field waiting for a 'shooter' to come out within 250 yards, sometimes longer distances. It's hunting, but to most hunters who don't have a set up like that, it seems like shooting ducks in a bath tub......compared to hunting public land or areas of private land that see hunting pressure. Must be nice! It looks like fun to me, and I like all forms of hunting.

That would be a great spot to put up a trail camera for a few weeks.

Yeah, I've said it in cb threads before: I live near prime public hunting land and keep a close eye on things all during bow and gun. If anything, hunter numbers seem to drop during open crossbow season. There is no increased pressure at all. I'm not sure why hunters on here are against crossbows and say they 'voted against' full inclusion which would give hunters a choice during all bow season. It's still an arrow and a string and an arrow can deflect ect, and there is just one shot. I don't see the big deal. And after reading on here how most hunters don't even attempt to practice during the bow season....It's possible a ton of deer are wounded and gut shot with compound bows and are never recovered. I'd much rather see a hunter use a crossbow, make a clean kill, and put a deer in the freezer instead of feeding coyotes. But that's just me.

I would think vertical bow hunters continue to practice through out the bow season to keep muscles in shape, to make sure the bow is still shooting properly after trips to the field, to practice with hunting cloths on during the colder temps ect. I understand some won't have a target out back and have to get to a range to shoot, which would be mucn more time consuming. I have a target in the yard and shoot shoot pretty much every day during the season, even if it's just one arrow before I head out or or return home. I will shine a light on my target and practice in the dark if needed.

Who has winter trail cams out?
genesee_mohican replied to genesee_mohican's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
I've had 3 or 4 cameras out and set to take video since end of the season and only had two small bucks show up on the cards. I feels like mid gun season for buck sightings! Lots of does w young ones and had a nice flock of turkey and a few coyotes. I still need to venture in deep to get my last cam and hope to soon. -
Running a chainsaw while standing on the ground is plenty dangerous enough. The fail videos are a good educational tool for anyone who uses a chainsaw, but man it hurts just watching them.

For the wood-burners, how's the season going?
genesee_mohican replied to philoshop's topic in General Chit Chat
Most people use the term cord when talking about firewood. But a cord of wood or full cord of wood is actually 3 face cords and measures 4ft wide by 4ft tall by 8ft long. A face cord would be a pile of 16 inch length logs, 4ft high and 8 ft long. -

genesee_mohican replied to philoshop's topic in General Chit Chat
I heat almost exclusively with firewood and have used about 6 face so far. I managed to get 6 face chord of red oak cut split and stacked for next year and will do some more when I can get in the woods. I also like to keep 4 face chord in reserve just in case something comes up. I like having the living room at 80 F all winter. The warmth and no heating bills is worth all the hard work. I enjoy producing firewood too, especially now that I have a wood splitter. -
It's not, but there is so much at stake. We all want the best for our children and we want them to turn out well and have success in all they do in life. It's not easy.
-
Lead by example, remain calm and keep a good open path of communication between you. You don't want them to shut down and see you as the enemy and not listen. Kids at that age need patience from their parents and the knowledge and things we have learned the hard way need to be taught and spoken to them over and over. Good luck.

Dicks sporting goods/field and stream
genesee_mohican replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in General Chit Chat
It's sickening that we are not hearing real common sense solutions, but instead blame 'assault weapons' and the current age law, thinking if we can just get rid of the bad guns and change the age, that will fix it all. Any pissed off, disturbed kid can pull his grandfather's bird gun off the wall and grab a few boxes of buckshot and get similar results. What then? Why don't we start protecting our schools???? Why don't we hear major talk about metal detectors, school guards, programs to steer kids in the right direction, programs to teach our children to speak up when they hear someone mention they wish to bring harm to everyone in the school? There has obviously been a slow steady decline in values, respect for others, discipline and taking ownership of one's life. What can we do to turn that around? What effect do the video games have, where young kids sit and shoot other human beings over and over an over have on one's mind at a young age? I pray our country can come up with some real solid solutions to protect our school children and turn this thing around. -
I'm glad this thread was started, we all pay too much for cell phone service and anyone with a family and kids in HS has a large bill. I've had a plan with two smart phones for several years, but with my daughter done with college and well on her way, it's time to get it down to one phone and look at other options. I'll be looking at T-Mobile for sure!

The snow is mostly melted here finally with this nice warm up, but I won't be able to get out till next week. I will keep an eye on this thread and bet it starts to light up soon.

Boot Suggestions
genesee_mohican replied to BKhunter's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
They were very warm on the cold days. I sit all day quite often and can't have cold feet, that's why I went with the 1000 gram. I also wear a good wool sock and use the toe warmers on the coldest days if needed. The high grounds are light weight boots and great for long walks in to the stand or all day still hunting, very comfortable and water proof. Not cheap at around 200 bucks but I wanted a good boot that will last a long time.
