My trail cams 100 yards behind my house have a big uptick in buck activity day and night since Thursday evening. Some nice deer passed through during the day on Friday, one at 11am! and the biggest buck that I've had on cam passed through yesterday at 2:30 in the afternoon during the rain while I was inside watching football. Anyways, this Wed looks like one of the best days of the season: Post cold front and rain cleared out. Highs in the 40's, light South Wind and B pressure of 30.24 >>>--------->

Mine is: me Not being able to hunt every day this time of year. I just want to be able to go anytime now, but must work. I have 18 days to hunt in Nov though, so I can't complain too much. 2nd would be: Scouting state land a year in advance, and finding a great looking place miles off the road and setting up a stand well ahead of the season. I look forward to hunting that stand and wait for the right day when the wind and timing seems perfect, only to see another hunter. It's no disrespect to the other hunters on state land, and they have just as much right as I do to be there, but it sure takes the air out of my sails when I see someone that far off the road on what is a very large piece of state land.

Well, we all know how stupid NY laws are. Cumo would say..."you don't need a 8" wide crossbow to kill a deer". Who knows what the DEC is thinking, they are legal in the rest of the states that allow crossbow.

Doesn't the Ravin have a 425 fps crossbow? Those 100 yard accuracy commercials are cool. It must be fun to shoot that thing at that distance and watch the bolt arc into the target. They will probably never be legal in NYS though. Too narrow. The regs say the device must be 17 inches wide, I think the Ravin is 8 inches.

I saw a spike following a doe's scent 20 mins after she passed by and a 4pt chasing a different doe this past Wed eve. Yesterday on the river bottom I had a doe feeding in front of me at 20 yards, she was always looking behind her and over towards the river. She stayed there for 20 mins or so, then a real nice buck came up over the river bed and passed behind me at 30 yards and eventually winded me. As usual, he was at my off shoulder when I first saw him and i'd have to do a 180 to get a shot. Wish I would have picked the other tree that would have been down wind of him 15 yds! It was great to see a nice buck though and a learning lesson. I was ready to pull out around 3pm due to the rain when I see a guy on the other side of the river and he was stashing an inflatable raft, then he crossed over the river to my side (to check his stand I believe). I got down and talked to him on the way out, nice guy. Sure is hard to find a place where no one hunts the river bottom!!!

It's hard to say without a size reference to go by, like another animal standing in the same spot, but based on what I see I'd say around 275lbs

Had 3 coyotes come thru at 9 this morning then had a doe come down the trail and feed in front of me at 10, she keep looking around and was real cautious. 10:30 a real nice mature buck comes up over the river bank. Too bad he appeared on my off shoulder and walked in behind me, but nice to see a beauty at 30 yards.

Looks like a cold front coming later today, with rain tonight and tomorrow. The deer should be moving today despite the warm temps.

I love to start scouting right after the season ends. It's a great time to explore new areas and spots that came to mind during the season, but didn't have time to check out. I'll do some scouting, run trail cams and shed hunt till May, Keep cams out year round too, then pick up the scouting in Sept again. Having things scouted out well and stands up that I'll have ready for this time of year is a good thing.

Good luck to you guys today! Sounds like a great time.

I was live from the stand this afternoon, sat 3 till sundown. I had a spike and a 4pt following does around and grunting quite a bit. It was interesting to watch a buck come through 20 mins after a doe ran through. He was sniffing all the vegetation she touched and followed exactly where she went through.

Some does start this early. One year I watched 5 mature bucks going crazy over a doe on Oct 27th. Snort weeze, antlers crashing and all going in circles around her. They were on the other side of a flooded river or I would have made a stalk.

I have a few days saved for bow and I'm waiting and watching the weather. Nov 3rd is starting to look good. Next Wed too. I'm looking forward to it, i'll tell ya that! -
I saw 3 bucks traveling together Sat am, but they seemed agitated with each other. Also saw 2 lone bucks together as well, they were running from some danger, but together. Sunday I saw a 1 horned 2pt hounding does and grunting. He had already broken off one side. I expect the cooler temps and having a doe come into heat somewhere will change things. Last year the best trail cam pics of the year were the last week of Oct with adult bucks on the hoof all times of day.

I think it's poorly written and confusing. 2 guys were hunting, one was shot. Sounds like perhaps a 3rd person was involved as the article states " was not hunting at the time of incident, but was probably target shooting". Maybe the accident was reported at 7pm ,but what time did the incident occur?

I'd say light oak drop in central Liv co. Some white oaks have a decent crop. The hickory nut crop is heavy and you can hear them dropping when on stand.

What's the best hunting knife?
genesee_mohican replied to thomashoard1909's topic in General Chit Chat
I would look for something made in the USA, better steel and will last much longer. I like a light weight folding knife and resharpen with a lansky knife sharpener for a razor edge. -
46F this am, I saw a group of 3 bucks traveling together. Lots of fresh scrapes. Maybe they will be on the move to work them before sunset. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

We need a hard frost to set the things back a little. -
Nice looking deer, I agree with around 130, hope you get a poke at him.

I picked up a pak of Rage slipcam xbow 100gr at walmart last night. (all the talk on here and seeing the commercials must have pushed me over the edge) They don't say made in china, or USA, has Superior WI on the package. The bar code is 8 53616 00301 I have no idea where they are made.

I been taking one shot at 32 yds every am and pm. When I use the same concentration on the 20 and under shots it's a smaller area than I was hitting a few weeks ago for sure.

I've have my target out back too and also have big bucks that show up on trail cam here very fall. I know I've had my target plowed over two years in a row by a buck and the heavy hoof prints in the grass right in front of the target confirmed that. Also, there is a wood pecker that makes a cavity in my target each fall and the raccoons have pulled it apart a few times trying to get to the bird.
