I am starting a collection. My grandad got rid of his last team of horses in 1950 when he got his first tractor (a John Deere M). I found this shoe (hanging from the collar) while I was planting corn this spring.

I left an old boat seat up in a tree blind over the winter last year, thinking I might use it for spring turkey hunting. I had killed a hen while seated on it a couple falls ago. A squirrel or something chewed it up. That turned into a good rainy-day shop project today. Hopefully my wife won't miss one lawn chair. I was only able to kill females off that old boat seat (a doe and a hen Turkey). Hopefully, I can get a male or two of the new one. The arm rest will be nice, but I will need to bring a seat pad for comfort on long sits. It should be a little more rodent proof. I was able to salvage the nice quiet swivel from the boat seat.

Same here. I like horseshoes and jarts a lot better.

Am I imagining things, or does this happen every election year. Somebody please remind me to stock up in 2023. Prices are crazy also. I was thankful to find a box of 30/30, 150 gr, Winchester XX hollow points today, but they cost me $ 25. I remember paying $ 9.99 for a box of 30/30 ammo just a few years ago. I am thankful that I now do most of my shooting practice with a bb gun. Those are still cheap and easy to find. Time to hang a beer can from a wire, and cut in in half, off the back deck with my Red-ryder.

Clueless Joe is at it again.

That what I hear. Nancy Pelosi wants to skip the debates. She is escared. Biden don 't know no better and would gladly do them if his handlers would let him. -

I can't wait for the debates. -
No Federals or 170's available at Runnings, and no 30/30 of any kind at Walmart or Johnsons. One box limit of ammo at Runmings, so I took a $ 25 box of Winnchestet XX holow-point 150's. At more than a dollar a shot, I am not going up practice with more than one shot, as long as it hits close enough to where the Federal 150's did. I might try that out on the range tomorrow, if the weather cooperates. It says on the box that they are good for deer and bear.

A nearby dealer is handy. There are JD and Kubota dealets within 5 miles of my place. Up until last year, there was also a Mahindra dealer that close. Other than oil filters every 100 hours, I have not needed to visit them much. That is one of the pluses of sticking with a quality brand. The nearby Kubota guy's other location carried Bush-hog brand rotary mowers and he was nice enough to ship one to his close location for me to pick up with my JD tractor.

His first 3-point tractor was the brown in the mid 30's. It was not commercially successful. He teamed with Henry Ford, and their collaboration (the Ford/Ferguson 9N) became the first successful production tractor, with the Ferguson designed 3 point hitch, in 1939. That Ford/Ferguson partnership did ok with Henry at the helm, but fractured when Edsel took over 1947 or so. Ferguson won a patent infringement lawsuit against Ford at that time and forced some of the changes on the model 8N. Among those was the "position" control, now found on all 3-point tractors.

If I were buying a new tractor today, I would likely start with Kioti. I think all of today's "food plot" sized JD's are rebadged Japanese powered Yanmars. Back in 2005, when I could still get an American-made JD Power tech engine in the 43-60 hp range, I was all in. I have not heard any bad stuff about the North Korean Kiotis. Tales of WW 2, Pearl Harbor, and Battan are still too fresh in my memory to consider a Yanmar or Kubota.

It looks like rain all day today, so it will be a good day for ammo shopping. I will go with the 170's, if I can find them. I sighted in my father in law's scoped Msrlin 336 with 150's, but my fiber optic sighted one should be close at 50 yards with 170's. I also need some more ammo for my 50 cal ML (240 gr T/C XTP). Lockport is close. Hopefully, Runnings, Johnsons, or Walmart will have something. I am hoping for a bit of dumb luck when it comes to the early Adirondack bear. I need to remember to put one of those 170's in "the middle of middle" if one appears. I have never seen one, let alone got a shot at one, but I understand that their vitals are a lot further back than a deer. Many years ago, I had a Marlin 336 with a fixed 4 power scope on it. I lost confidence in that gun after missing a rabbit with it one time, and eventually traded it. I never killed a thing with it, but I loaned it to a friend one time. He won a bear hunt at a sportsman"s raffle. He killed a big black bear with a 170 gr on that hunt, so I know they work.

The Ferguson TO20 is very good on a plow, but not so hot on other 3-point implements because it lacked hydraulic "position" control. That leads to lots of scalping with a rotary mower unless you chain up the lower links. It is more the equivalent of the older Ford 9N (1939-1941), and 2N (1942-1947), than the Ford 8N (1948-1952). The 8N introduced position control, which is a lot better for any 3-point tool other than a plow. It has a selector lever under the seat, to enable draft control for plowing. The hydraulic draft control (something your JD probably lacks) is way better on a plow. I would keep that old Ferguson around just for that. I love a plow for food-plotting because plowing with draft control is lots of fun and the plow minimizes the need for herbicides, helping to keep my venison "organic".

Technically, it is not a tractor if it is a hydro. Those are officially categorized as "lawnmowers".

Biden - Harris will be coming for our guns
wolc123 replied to rob-c's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
It is encouraging to see that there are only 3 or 4 Biden supporters on this site. With the momentum Trump and and Pence have now, after a stellar RNC, I think they have a shot of carrying NY state. Don't despair folks, Canada will surely welcome you after a disappointing November. It is not too much colder up there, and they have good fishing and some decent hunting. -
Both these turnip plots were planted on 7/21, seeded and fertilized at the same rate. Due to dry conditions, the one on the poorly drained ground out back (top photo)did a bit better than the one on the well drained ground up front. They are up about 18" and thick out back and 12" and thin up front. We have got a fee good rains over the last few days and it is supposed to rain most of the day tomorrow. It will be interesting to see if the slower plot on the well drained ground catches up.

For deer recovery, it depends on the terrain you got to deal with, Mountains and bridgeless creek/swamp-crossings, quad: I dont have those features at my place, so I don't own a quad. Thankfully, my dad and father in law have them for me to borrow when I hunt their places. My dad has a swamp and my father in law has mountains and swamps. I am always better served with a loader tractor at home:

I will try and check that spot out. I managed to scrape together 11 rounds of 30/30 ammo to today, so I am going to take my 30/30 on the trip. That includes 6 Federal 150 grain and 5 170 grain rounds. Hopefully, I can find a few boxes and do a little more practice prior to that bear hunt. I had my Remlin 336BL hitting right on at 75 yards with the 150's before deer season last year. I am going to see if Runnings has any more of those tomorrow. It is almost time to start practicing again for deer season anyhow.

Maybe they are after more tourist dollars. A 5 fish limit is a sign of a better fishery and will draw folks in from a greater distance. Many won't drive more than an hour, to keep just 3 fish. If the numbers drop too much, they can always readjust.
-
Sounds like you got a pretty good deal.
-
As long as the fillets are still twitching when you take them off the fish, you won't find much better eating than bass, especially grilled, baked, or broiled.

Most of these folks ain't that good at math.

I picked up my hunting licence today at Walmart and it went pretty smooth, other than the printer running out of paper half way thru printing the tags. Ten minutes later, they got them all printed up, including 2 9F dmp's on the second try. I will be up in the Adirondacks, the first weekend in October, and wonder if there is any decent public land early bear hunting nearby at that time. I now have a bear tag, and a place to stay a few nights, but no 30/30 ammo. Hopefully, I can get some before then. Walmart had nothing but 12 ga bird shot. I could bring my 30/ 06, for which I have plenty of ammo, but that heavy thing ain't fun to lug around the mountains.

I am 95 % sure he will be 2.5 on opening day of crossbow season, when he would be a "shooter" for me.
-
Agreed, even a field tip will do it there. More than likely, the mechanical from the crossbow has the edge on recovery percentage for a combination of: 1) always strikes closer to same point of aim as field tip, 2) larger cutting diameter improves blood trail and increases chances of striking vitals. From vertical bows, those advantages might not be enough to overcome the additional energy required for blade deployment since there is usually a lot less "extra" energy available. The study that I referenced showed no significant advantage for the mechanical from a vertical. My personal experience with verticals and mechanicals is limited to a single shot. That one struck very far from my point of aim, but still resulted in a short 40 yard recovery. My recovery percentage with fixed broadheads from a vertical compound bow was significantly less than the 100 % that I enjoyed with both that single shot and five with my crossbow, using mechanicals.
