  1. I think this is true but I like to hang in "fridge like" conditions because I can take my time and I do prefer fileting off the dried outer layer it's easier than fresh connective tissue, etc.
  2. As many 33-45 degree days as I get, up to 14 on the quarters. pretty happy with the past 48 hangin hours got about 24 good temp hours left before the quarters hit the fridge to get cut up ASAP...I don't have a deer fridge...yet.
  3. My wife and I just had our daughters daycare Halloween parade through Marcellus it was fun. Seemed like a sweet morning to be hunting I hope Chrisw, or 52 or Bart or Rac or TF or ncoubtry or cabin or all of em just stuck a big buck
  4. I have the kryptec Vellus pants and jacket they are typically my last or second to last layer...wind proof very water resistant pretty warm silent fleece. I got a kuiu chinook jacket and old BP tundra Hyde bibs for over the rest if it's gonna be in the low 20s. I also have Pnuma insulated vest. I mix and match theses outer layers based on conditions. I walk in with a light pant (firstlite wool) and base layer til mid 20s then I walk in with a mid weight pant (skree hardscrabble) and 2 base layer (woolblend and polartech fleece). I put my outer layer(s) on at the stand.
  5. Thanks for all the support yesterday huntingny! Ive been starting to get a little burnt despite not hunting that much relative to previous seasons. My mother reminded me I can't control the weather on Friday so I made lemonade out of pee on Saturday by hanging a new set (in freezing monsoon conditions) in an annual breeding area but with very little in sign yet. Ive had this tree on my list a long time so I settup for 2 hours then prepped the trail in and out of the thickets in my lanes with antlerice hot doe and buck (it was pouring so I doused the trail) and made a mock. Sunday AM went as planned I got in early/quiet/downwind and I set a stink stick of hot doe over the scrape and hung one of buck by my boots in the tree...all was perfect...then I realized I forgot my release at home....ugh I left all my heavy gear on and my bow in the tree and raced home and back and was set again by 6:57, overheated and under-confident. Around 7:30 I snapped a pic of my lure lanes and posted it on the live thread it was just legal so I decided to tickle the bag and give one very light grunt in hopes it would explain all the commotion the previous hour. A few minutes later I catch movement at my 7 right where I expect it, I see main beam around ears. He is nosing my trail hard but every couple seconds does a quick pause. I draw when his head is obscured he pops in my first lane (15 yds) on his way to the mock. I fire seated (my preference) I see it's back a bit he gallops a 180 then stops and slowly walks back into the brush a couple wobbles. It was raining, the shot exited a little back. I got down to check the arrow good pass thru but a bit of liver smell. I waited an hour then found first and second blood then backed out called dog search to be safe and asked for permission on adjacent property and waited til 2:30 (7 hrs) on the liver. Braylee the dachsund followed the exact trail with no blood (all in the carcass) and I spotted him easily after about 80 yards and 3 minutes on the same trail he walked out on. 140 on the scale and a nice marbled chocolate vanilla swirl typical 8 rack maybe 85-90" net. Nice 2.5 for the county parcel I'm hunting. Good hanging weather today as well
  6. Live from the shed...son is bugging me for tendies gotta get these chores done Shot was more like an 8c on the chart entered lung exited liver easy track 80 yds I spotted him but the dog deserves the credit to...no blood trail really
  7. 140 on the scale I'd educated guess 90 net...good 2.5 for this tiny county parcel: story in harvest thread eventually
  8. Been a few weeks since I indulged so I dipped into a celebration brew! Just got done dragging...hanging can wait 4 ounces
  9. 15 ft up max fairly level shot the arrow stuck in the ground 4" but on a low angle so that the nock is maybe 6" off the ground. Nearly positive hit the liver...no mistaking the smell, I'm banking on that fur the dog, it's the reason I called them... Fixed 2 blade 125 grain 75 grain insert Never can be 100% till you cut em open but I'm pretty sure...dark blood etc The way this season has gone for me I'm expecting trouble, but the situation feels pretty good.
  10. I've gotten permission from the nice old lady who lives adjacent to the property. Prolly help her with her overgrown yard this summer, she was really nice. Dog tracker sent me a couple nifty pics/chart For reference I believe I entered a fairly broadside 9-E 2pm cannot come soon enough
  11. Dog search will join me between 2-3pm... Precip is over for now...gonna go get permission from the neighboring property just in case
  12. Dog search take time just to call you back...I'm thinking about 2-3 pm (bout 7 hours on the liver hit) Again thanks a bunch for the nice words and advice guys...I've been to this rodeo before...I was concerned a bit about lack of blood and plenty of precip, I found first and second blood (15 and 30 past the arrow)...marked them with what I had and backed out. called the dogs will wait on them and prolly head out mid afternoon with or without them.
  13. I'm very aware...but I'm just nervous about recovery cuz of lack of blood trail because of the back exit and rain. As I said before he was nearly broadside but obviously very slightly toward as it exited back a bit further the entry was back but still in the long ribs, I saw it on impact... the only reason I knew it hit liver or a bit of guts was the slight smell on the original quick check of the arrow which I later rechecked and it's just liver no sign of stomach/intestine contents.
  14. I used deer search to locate my best archery buck the morning after a 7 hour wait followed by a double bump and stand off that led to a farmers yard. Next day Thor the dachshund ran the entire 350 yard trail on 5 minutes to find my buck next to the farmers garage, ha! Liver is good fur dog search
  15. I think I just found what I'm gonna do today while I wait with my stomach eating itself
  16. I do this too but yesterday I hung this set in the cold monsoon so I hung it up to dry
  17. Bone breaking (like Grizzly scapula) penetration. So far the results are 3 dead deer that died in front of me practically on the spot totally unaware what happened First one was through shoulders
  18. They never death run with my heavy settup...they literally don't know what happened every harvest...the rest were DRT tho Decent buck (under 100 prolly) main beams were close to the ear it happened fast.
  19. Super thick you could lose a lot in here...I'm backing out for a bit tho and yeah no doubt dead deer just a doubt about recovery
