  1. In Western NY give or take property taxes on residential are about 3.5% of assessed. I know about AG exemptions. But what about, let's say a piece of land worth $50k and it is just used for hunting. And once in a blue moon it is logged. What would taxes be on that? And now what would the taxes be on it if it were mostly wetlands (meaning it's worthless for anything except hunting)?
  2. Only fixed I've tried in my centerpoint is montec and the consistency was too poor to take in field. That xbow with the nikon bolt scope and field tip normally gets within 1" of aim point at 30 yards (rarely worse, and generally better), but with the fixed it was just off too much. I think mechanical suit xbow very well because you're likely to have better accuracy, and the incredible kinetic energy of the arrow means even with the large cutting area you will have superb penetration. The inability to tune it like a vertical is likely also an issue, so the fixed just planes. There is a definite comfort level shooting fixed that isn't possible with mechanical, though (i.e. do the mechanical practice heads really fly the same as the regular?).
  3. A few years back I jumped two deer doing this. They'd run 50-60 yards then wait, then I'd jump them again. I did this 2-3 times before they finally said enough of this crap and ran off. This was with a bow. I had no idea what I was doing of course. I've only ever walked up on a deer and had a shot once. My first time hunting, ever. I've tried dozens of times since and have literally not once ever walked up on a deer and seen it before it saw me. Generally they wait until I'm 30 yards away then run off and at that point I realize they are there. Still hunting is absurdly difficult!
  4. This artwork is impressive. There is a lady I see at the walworth NY lumberjack festival who does these. Tricky to turn a piece of wood into something that looks so good with a tool as rough as a chainsaw.
  5. It's really uncanny. I had at least four deer somehow detect me a few weeks back around 30 yards away. I was in a tree stand with a perfect view to them and no foliage. Maybe I moved? Anyway, all four dead on looking straight at me. I simply stopped moving. A minute later they lost interest and proceeded to carry about as normal including walking even a bit closer as if I was not there at all.
  6. I always do full camo except the last 4-5 sits I've had a dark blue flannel checked top on and I've had a ton of deer walk by including looking in my direction and they could not care less. And honestly I've had a lot of deer walk all around me including down wind and very few indicate any interest in my smell at all. I do not put any effort whatsoever into limiting scent except for when I clean my hunting clothes (rarely), I use a scent free wash. I think I was winded by a deer that seemed extremely hesitant to come by--it knew something was up--but most simply do not care of those that walk by me (I realize it's possible far more deer avoided me entirely but I suspect not).
  7. Weird season so far. Last weekend I saw so many deer it was stupid. In the past week I have drawn on three deer in a row and didn't shoot including a large buck. Three shots I probably would have taken last year. I guess I'm a bit less desperate now as this is my fourth season and so far a deer each year (this year as xbow in canada a few weeks back) so I finally consider myself a legitimate hunter and don't need to prove it to myself quite as much to reach out with a low odds shot. This is a screenshot of forecast I took yesterday. I've never seen anything so @*#&ing despicable. I do not plan on driving an hour each way to sit in this crap. Low 40's rain would freeze me out in a hurry and would be abject misery. 9 days straight of rain? wth
  8. 3+ hours nothing eventful besides dropping my laptop out of the tree (yeah...). It still works. This is why I don’t midday hunt! Gotta get home unfortunately. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. Squirrels out now do things are looking up. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. Sitting in a tree for last hour but I didn’t expect much midday and so far not even squirrels. Good weather tho Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. Ah. I realize it sounds incredibly hypocritical, and even ironic perhaps, but I have a slot open today I could hunt between about 11 and 3. The very, very worst time to try and hunt. But I'm off this afternoon and the weather is crap this weekend. Seriously inclined to get out there even if just to sit and watch squirrels. Hour drive each way, though!
  12. I think with enough time it is. My recovery rate since I started hunting appears to be below average based on stats I've read and that pisses me off quite a good deal. The last deer I lost was particularly bothersome. Takes some time to get over it.
  13. Def looking forward to it. Bow season has been a bit "sore" for me if I'm honest. If I don't get a deer next week with vertical I'm looking forward to that 100+ ft lbs and 3X zoom right now.
  14. Overall not helping. I check my phone a lot. I was on CNBC last night 12 min before sunset. pretty silly. I have never, ever had a deer sneak up on me, though. I only am on it for short periods and generally spend most of my time standing with head on a swivel.
  15. Anybody who's been out opening day of gun knows that sunrise seems to start 20 min early that day. The light restrictions are a bit wild, because there is no law against me shooting a deer at 70 yards with a bow (for me that would just be hitting general mass, so a thoroughly unethical shot), but if it's a sunny morning and 5 min before sunrise nope that's too dangerous. Laws are slow to change.
  16. I was in stand last night for a sunset sit. Sunset at 6:15 or 6:16. At 6:14 finally deer come by. It was just damn dark in the woods. I had a shot I would have taken with better light. I could still see my pins and housing okay, but the deer was blending with the trees enough that I did not feel comfortable. I drew and had pins on its vitals (maybe?), but at 25 yards I need to see exactly what I'm doing and it was just too much darkness. BTW I think my night vision is just fine. I've been out many times before sunrise and felt I could have safely taken a shot 10-15 min before sunrise and I could see well. Could have been the cloud cover last night or whatever They walked to a field 60 yards past me and I could see that field very brightly lit. It would have been a perfectly visible shot if I was in a tree right on the edge and shot into the field. No issue at all.
  17. Dunno how much bias there is in this but when I googled most accurate fixed, this site still says the G5 does it. https://toxophilites.com/fixed-blade-broadheads/ I guess with even stronger metal they could take more mass from the blades themselves and push it down toward the insert. In theory with strong enough metal there could be so little metal in the blade area you could have a fixed broadhead fly precisely like a field tip because there would be no flat surface out front to plane.
  18. It works amazingly well and pulling arrows out of it is easy as pie. Huge target, will last for thousands of shots. For a broadhead target I researched a lot and the rinehart 18 is the one to get. I also keep it in my van as a discharge target at the end of a hunting day. The target is $100 or $120 but it's extremely robust and will take years of broadhead shooting (unless literally all you do when you practice is with broadheads).
  19. I asked Montec this last year. I'm pretty sure the reply was the package is different. As for edge, I can get an okay edge. Is it razor sharp, no, but I am not convinced at all the animal cares or that makes a difference. I bought a pack of these last year. I liked the idea of cut on contact with zero reliability issues, and high likelihood of being able to reuse them. They shoot well on my compound, but I still using rage because I have some and they cut bigger. I wanted to use these on the xbow because I felt they'd have enough kinetic energy to make even a shot through bone forgiving (not that I want one). The problem is they do not fly well on my centerpoint 370. I could use out to 30 but some of them were of several inches from field point at 40 and I just didn't like that. It may not be the broadhead's fault per se, and the xbow may just not be tuned properly, but with field points and practice rage tips it is extremely accurate, so that's what I go with. I still love the look of these and I suspect they would offer higher odds than rage of full penetration (which I have never had with my compound on any deer). One thing I LOVE about these is that unlike practice broadhead tips with these I can practice with the actual head I'm going to use, then just run it across wet stone a few times (or just have a permanent practice head) and I'm back in business. There is zero guess work about field point vs broadhead or where the arrow will go, which can't be said about a mechanical.
  20. 2" group at 50 yards, nobody will complain about that! Is that stock scope on them?
  21. You have my sympathy on finding hunting time with kids. I have a couple old enough now I can leave them at home if necessary, so it's getting slightly easier to do this sort of thing. Oh and believe it or not I saw enough deer yesterday that I bet they would have been moving all day. I actually wish I had sat all day, despite what I said earlier
  22. As I've often said, I've spent my time in the woods without deer--trip after trip without seeing them. Yesterday was absolutely absurd. I got into stand around 20 min before sunrise (sunrise 7:35). Kicked two up walking in. At sunrise four deer start to approach. They are stopped by four more deer from another direction. Ultimately the first four are put off and take off. As the second four are nearing me, four more (not the original four, btw) come in and startle the second group of four. Shortly thereafter three small deer come by. Now it's about around 8:40 so I assume I'm probably done for the day. Also I'm thinking everything I've seen are doe. Not done. Two bucks come in, once massive. They actually start to butt antlers in front of me. Never seen it before. By 9:00 my daughter and I leave. We come back later two hours before sunset. We kick a deer up while I'm setting my stand, see four more in a field that get startled as I'm climbing. Then two more 40 yards downwind catch us by wind and spend 10 min standing there thinking about what is wrong. They circle around just out of range slightly put off by us and eat in the field next to the woods I'm in. Thereafter a very good size buck comes by and magically is just out of range until he walks by at 25 yards. I mean this guy just got incredibly lucky, he was within 5 yards for a long time just magically going slightly beyond my comfort zone. Finally he's broadside. I draw and I'm very, very close to shooting but he's moving and I think better of it. I realize I forgot to stop him and scold myself for it. Then a baby comes under my stand very slowly. Also at one point I saw two deer at 50 yards sprinting through the woods (upwind of me). Finally at 6:15 (5 min before sunset) four more deer in the field. Can't call them in of course because deer ignore my calls. As for shot opportunities miraculously damn few indeed despite gobs of deer (largely this is because the biggest pack of deer tends to be the lead and they have all these eyes behind ready to blow, so it's tricky in the large groups). Also my daughter was on a ladder stand 10 yards away that has all the deer come about 10-20 yards to its north and with me 10 yards south on a climber, I'm going to move it.
  23. Summit viper. I have even hauled it in and put it up 20 yards from a new ladder stand. It's comfortable and I can set height just right to get best shot. If I had my own land I would set up a (nice) ladder or something more permanent just to save time.
  24. I basically won't bother with it anymore. I won't say never, but if it's two hours past sunrise I'm getting real antsy these days. Deer slow right within 90 minutes after sunset in my limited experience. If any driving involved (always is), I would not bother hunting midday.
  25. OKay it was $47 with the 20% ubiquitous harbor freight code, but finally I got one
