    That is why maple syrup could never compete with honey or sugar pricewise. Honey might be close to the same price soon enough the way the bees are doing.

    That is the short version. It all takes some time to become good at it and figure things out. You can boil it to quickly or too long,filter it wrong and end up with lots of sediment,not boil it down enough and have it spoil... But it is not that hard,very much like gardening or cutting up deer. @Wny buck huntersaid it well.

    Great pics. The first shoot here is in a couple of weeks,the 11th. I am getting excited,i have been shooting almost daily since i got my new strings on.

    It is a real tough nut to crack. Generally wackos do the mass shooting,sometimes with illegal guns even. How do you stop that? There is no easy answer and the gun right folks would do much better trying tryingt come up with some solution or approach to it. It certainly does not help to have as many guns in circulation as there are in this country,but i think Canada is not too far behind in per capita guns but they have a lot less mass shootings.

    Are you telling her where the middle of the bag is or how to adjust the sight? That would have to go the opposite of right and down.

    Thanks for the specifics @dinorocks. As a first timer the filtering is proving the most difficult part and knowing when to stop boiling is tricky too. A friend lent us his extra hydrometer,so that helps. We thought we filtered the last batch well but got the kind of sediment you talked about. So my wife ended up heating it up again and filtering again. It looks beautiful now. I may collect sap again at the end of today and then do our last boil in the next few days. We have plenty of syrup for ourselves and even some to share.

    It's hard to know when to stop getting the next best thing. The friend that got me into sugaring found a nice evaporator plus pans for me for $500 . That is a great price but it dont think we need it. Our little makeshift setup works pretty well and with a few improvements will be just fine for us.

    You are right about scouting now and trimming as well which i dont do much of. The rubs from last fall are still very visible and even scrapes and trails are very clear. It is good info to have come fall or better yet late season. There is still snow in the woods here on the hills,the valleys are snow free.

    We collected about 40 gallons between yesterday and today. Almost finished boiling it now.

    Ah,here we go. How come i didnt hear you being concerned about that last year? Oh,because your party was in charge,thats right. This happens every time the democrats take over,all of a sudden the republicans are very concerned with the national debt. Not so much when they are in control. It pains me to say it but i agree with you that the national debt is a problem. But so is the inconsistency of the focus of the republicans when it comes to that.

    Let me ask you this. There are how many of you that believe there was widespread fraud and none of you can come up with any definite proof? How slick do you think the cheating was? It has little to do with the media,over 60 courts had the lawsuits go nowhere? That is a pretty bad percentage.

    Start working on that bunker. If you want to worry go ahead,i choose to live my life a little different from that. Lots of things to choose from that we all can worry about. China is not making my top five.

    I just emptied my buckets and was surprised to find that the new area i tapped produces twice as much sap as the other area i tapped earlier. Not sure why,maybe because some of the older trees in the first area are by the roadside and not as vigorous as a midsize tree in the prime of its life?

    That's funny,i just saw some of those in someone else's yard yesterday not too far from my house. What do you guys think about the season so far? I talked to a local maple syrup producer yesterday and he said it is the worst season he has had so far. And next week looks too warm to be good.

    I tapped 12 more trees yesterday,they are running today. I may have enough to boil by the weekend.
