  1. I would smell it. Unless it was really rank, I'd eat it. Worst case scenario, I'd get some evil diareaha and be puking my guts out. Not too bad, I could lose a few pounds anyway.
  2. If I am not mistaken, this is the same method that the Native Americans used for generations to capture their horses. They would often times "push" the horses on purpose and then turn their backs on them. Often times they did this over several days. Each time the did this little "push then ignore" the horses would return a little closer to investigate just what was pushing them and why. Eventually they would get so close that the Indians would be able to wrangle them and begin breaking them. I have no factual information to back this up but read it somewhere and have been told the story by many an old horseman in the hill country of Texas.
  3. I went to school in Canton, too. At St. Lawrence. I love it up there.
  4. Are you a fireman in the city?
  5. Have any connections in Westchester county? Im not a potential employee, but I am a potential customer.
  6. I love all music. Just saw whats left of the Dead at MSG on Halloween night. They were amazing. Bob Weir is a legend. John Maier was quite a pleasant surprise too.
  7. I hunt as much as possible in Westchester with the bow from open to close. I only hunt the opening weekend with the firearm. I know a few guys that only hunt the opener with rifle. As said above, very low success rate.
  8. Im not necessarily disagreeing with you, and I am a lot more familiar with hunting in Westchester County as I am with hunting further upstate. I only hunt in 7P, Chenango County, on opening weekend. But, I would think that a decrease in the numbers of hunters would lead to seeing more deer in the woods, no? Is it the opposite because less hunters means less people pushing deer and because of the vast amount of land the deer have lots of places to go hide? I would think less hunters = less deer killed = larger deer populations.
  9. I agree that it is ridiculous. I dont think there should be any age restriction as long as the minor is under the immediate supervision of a responsible adult, even better, legal guardian. My friends in Texas take their 5 and 6 year olds out in the blinds with them all the time. Granted, a 5-6 year old is usually not old enough or strong enough to shoulder and safely handle a large bore firearm. Several 7-8 year olds have taken their first animal down there.
  10. Tough, yes. Indestructible, no. I'd be willing to bet that buck is dead within a couple hundred, at most, yards of the side of that highway.
  11. I saw a bumper sticker from a gun store near where I went to college. The bumper sticker read: "Kids who hunt, fish, and trap dont grow up to mug little old ladies." I always liked that bumper sticker and find it to be very true.
  12. Just goes to show you, in the first responder's line of work, nothing is routine. Very turbulent times right now for all law enforcement and other first responders. Keep your heads up, and on a swivel, out there.
  13. Isn't there a Leroy, NY up off of Rt. 11 in St. Lawrence County, between Ft. Drum and Canton?
  14. I agree. That being said, spread the word, tell all out of staters that it's not worth their time to come here and shoot our deer. If they don't believe you, just show them the article.
  15. Prease accept our aporogies.
  16. You found that today? Are you going to keep it or try to find it's rightful owner. If you keep it, better take it to the range and sight it in for yourself.

    Second rut?

Several years ago, also in 3S, a bunch of buddies and I were standing around drinking beers in another buddies driveway at about 9-10 o'clock at night right around Christmas. We were in the process of debating whether or not there was a 2nd rut, and if there was had it happened, was it over, etc. Litterally, as we were having the debate I was like "holy shit, do you hear that?" We all stopped talking and listened as two bucks, probably less than 100 yards behind us, in a small valley, really battled it out. The next morning, my buddy sat right in that valley and shot a monster 9-point, at least a 140+. Does 2 bucks fighting = rutting activity? I would think so.
  18. If he is on his way back, and he crosses within 30 yards of my stand, while I am in it, then no, he will not come back. I have wounded bucks before, not found them, and gotten a second shot on them a few days or weeks later. I guess it depends on the area, the deer, and other factors. If there is something in the area that he really wants, i.e. food source, hot doe, whatever, then I think he'll come back to it.
  19. I've had goat several times. A lot of, if not all of, the West Indian restaurants down near where I work serve curried goat and it is amazing. If you have the taste for that type of food. Aside from curried, I've had it several other ways, and it has always been delicious.

    Second rut?

Im in 3S too. Last buck I saw while in the stand was Halloween morning. I had some good bucks on camera, all at night, up until October 24th. Since then, nada. Hopefully December will bring some changes.
  21. Sat in 3s this afternoon from 2:30 to dark. One tree rat. No deer. Sure would like to get a shot at a coyote if Im not gonna shoot any deer. Beautiful afternoon but no action unfortunately.
  22. Welcome. I used to live on Nantucket and still have some friends that live and hunt there a lot. I shot a few deer out there and caught tons of big striped bass and blues and false albies too. Love it out there when the rich folk go home.
