Antler Restrictions - What are your thoughts?
16. ga hunter replied to TheHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
where does this figure of 75% of new yorks beard being juvinile bucks come from if that was the case wouldn't there be fork horns running every where instead of does? "Where in the natural order of a species is a population represented by 75% plus of juvenile males?" and i doubt that 2/3 of nys hunters are in support contact your dec for a survey next fall when you buy your liscence so we can get a real number- 1885 replies

doc on the second map there is a legand on the side state prescribed burns were marked by a white lightining bolt there were six for the 25 year period so it has necer been a relevant practice in this state take that back on second exam it was for 2010 alone so six is a decent number
-
6 prescibed burns in 25 years is not considered a management plan in any other state i don't know all the details but i can try and get ahold of one of my buddies from sc how is pretty up to date on this stuff
-
know what 8c is like i work in it its too bad you can't hunt in kodak park.....
-
lol i mean i don't really care i take what i want but find it funny when people complain about one thing but do another
-
and yet so many complaing about the age of nys bucks threres not enough older bucks in ny but there is enough to take 3 or more in one season puzzling
-
they could afford a program like that if they looked into and if they upscaled the logging of old growth stands could increase income from sale of wood in south carolina the controled burns are usually done by the local fire dept. at no charge to the state state just tells them where and when to burn. And why should the state sell its public forests ? i see land for sale all the time maytbe not what someone wants to pay for it but it is forsale. i guess that just goes back to being a land of opprotunity not everyone will be capable of owning land ect.
-
why not instead of feeders push for the state to promote reforestation projects ie... controled burns& logging of state lands ect to accomplish what you want with the deer heard. Not to mention it would promote better populations of wildlife of all types. in all the states i have lived in ny is the only one that did not have large scale land management programs for thier public holdings.

Antler Restrictions - What are your thoughts?
16. ga hunter replied to TheHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
i' wasn't saying all we have left is deer.what i was getting at is this, there still are grouse in this state but if the state fails to thin some mature forest we will lose them. if you are hunting them you have to have your ducks in a row and know where to find them. all the complianing i hear about mature bucks is nothing compared to what i and other avid gamebird hunters endure in our quests. granted we get to watch smart beautiful dogs work thier magic afield while we log hours to flush a few birds but. if every deer hunter had to spend the same ammount of time to see one deer male or female i would see room for griping but that is not the case. plus it all comes full circle if forest thinging is not done deer will suffer also antler restrictions or not.i am not against ar but i do believe there to be more important things that new york sportsman should be investing all thier time into other than them. i remember my great uncle saying that when he was a kid if a deer track was seen in delaware county it was a huge ordeal. due to the fact that the land was abused ie. clear cut for the acid factories. if we are not careful the same thing could happen agian. it would be a long way off but nys could loose all native wildlife if we are ot careful think not look at the wild turkey yes they are on the rise again but soley due to efforts of sportman and nwtf. i belive we have all but lost pheasants for good in our fine state with new farming techniques and diminshing habitat there still are small sects of wild birds but i would not expect them to make it to far into the future even with intervention from pheasants forever. It is just not economically feasible to our agriculural industry. Ar may increase the age structure i just think to make a real difference in this state sportsman should look at the broad spectrum of wildlife instead of just the main big game spieces.- 1885 replies

i don't understand why "deer hunters get so hung up on this the deer heard in ny is doing fine as compared to other spieces. i don't hear upland bird hunters bitching and crying about the dwinling numbers of birds we pursue or the fact that you have had to hunt put and take pheasants in ny since the mid 80's. and grouse hunters could make quite a case the state not thining lands as needed to support decent populations of ruffed grouse in our state. or the changing farming practices that all but wiped out wild pheasnts in ny. a lack of buck age structre is nothing to compared to the plight of some of our small game animals eben with an imbalance the deer heard will sustain a huntable population. this can not be said for all spieces in ny but i guess that really dose not matter? just the whitetailed buck- 1885 replies

it all depends though too i mean there are many sections of state land that little to no others will ever travel. and it all is up to the hunter really and if one decides to leave a stand they should understand that it may not be there when they return. is it right no the land belongs to every citizen of this state and each and everyone of us should be able to use the land as we are allowed but as always some in our society make this less than desirable.
-
yea it all depends on what type of "state land" it is i know wma's you can not "store personal property"on. also i am sure they can over rule thier rules by making exclusionary rules. if it's darien state park it is because its a park not forest
-
i predominately hunt state land both in western and southern tier and have ghood luck for the most part. fletch it is not necessarily against the law to leave a stand over night "Permanent tree stands are prohibited. However, a tree stand or blind is allowed, provided that it does not injure any trees, is properly marked or tagged with the owner's name and address or valid hunting or fishing license number, and is placed and used during big game season, migratory game bird season, or turkey season, but no more than thirty days in one location per calendar year." from dec web site use of state forests

i would not stress on such things yet i went back to school at 25 after figuring out what i did not want to do as a living and with the way the economy is it might be good to have more than one "skill" at 19 i believe you still have plenty of time to figure out what it is that works best for you
