  1. Snares are ok but even w relaxing locks if entanglement is used the animal is dead so they should not be used by houses or least not when using entanglement. Footholds imo are way safer
  2. Rob don't get defensive, I'm an archery instructor n was stating things only to help. If you don't want the advice I apologize
  3. Another thing best not to ever draw a bow w no arrow, you can get hurt n the bow certainly will in a dry fire
  4. To be honest it's miles too long. Id look for a new bow, no way to set back (back tension) or follow through release. if money is tight trade for it. Bows are like shoes, they gotta fit. Now your grip is also way off. Your knuckles need to be at a 45 degree.
  5. One easy way to find them is to walk the perimeter of cornfields. They're super destructive to them. Look for bear paths going into the corn than find the spot w the most damage n start there. Theyll make a mess of the field if they're in it, it'll look like a tornado landed. if you don't have corn look to mast trees, beech n hickory seem favorites. If you have berry trees n Theres fruit almost a guarantee they'll hit that., the trees will show sign of them climbing but it's not perfect claw marks so don't expect to see that, more like scuff marks all the way up tree. Think bout it, what else would cause that. I butcher everything myself and its some of the best meat there is btw
  6. Forget the deer in there, turn a beagle loose in it n watch what happens
  7. Growalot I wasn't dising you. I'm just not sure why youths or anything else matter. Every single hunt takes planning, from a small game pouch for birds, deer drag, etc
  8. Bear meat is better. I mostly eat game n that's how I feel n most guys seem to that understand how to cook it which goes for any meat, especially wild game. Next one you get take some chops n brush melted butter n Worcestershire on it as it cooks on grill or just put accent food seasoning instead of the other two. This site seems anti bear eating. What you heard, your words not mine may be incorrect. Some people disdain all meat, or some cultures cows, some eat rats, you get the point. Bear is a fatty marbly meat, it needs to be on grill or oven rack so some of the grease bleeds out. Now spring hunts in extreme northern climates can have bears fresh out of the den which would affect taste as certainly would a late May/June hunt where the bear sat in the shade of some tarp n the fat turned green n the claws fell out. That bear isn't fit for consumption. Not sure what kinda bear you ate but to be honest if we aren't going to eat them they should walk. I guarantee some "hunters" here don't eat deer meat, or turkeys, pheasant, rabbit, squirrel. Plain n simple don't waste em.
  9. You ever heard of moose? Of course they take animals bigger than 300, elk I'm sure as well though I have no personal friends kids that have, buffalo, African animals, etc. The moose were taken by young children n winched out. Where there's a will (plan) theres a way. Not sure why you're not buying this?
  10. Very cool, congrats to you both n best of luck w it
  11. Buckmaster is right. A new hunter will prob get a new stand n a harness is included per tma standard
  12. Growalot why do you think it makes a dif being a kid? Either way we need to plan. Guys take way bigger game than bears n youths do too.
  13. My brother on same hunt w quad. Didn't come get me. Had it loaded when he come get me n mine which was loaded. Unfortunately it was a beautiful chocolate w blaze but I lost phone w pic
  14. What we do is have a recovery team btw. A bunch of guys sworn to help if any one gets a bear they can't handle. It works. If quads are allowed where you are ill tell you what we do w Alberta Giants. Back up quad to bear. Turn off gas, flip quad up so back is by bear. Slip tie downs under bear n Rachet him to quad. Lower quad down n he's attached n loaded. The pic is one of many. This bear was retrieved by two fellows n the quad method in permafrost. I didn't help but was in same camp
  15. Hides don't have to be saved. Are all deer hides? Bears taste better so room for meat? I did taxidermy a long time n skinned for 2 bear camps. The hands look sorta human in a way but the rest more like a giant coon w all the fat n round body. Just my opinion but Id say have at it. Yes plan the retrieval. Skin n butcher it yourself. Not too hard, plenty of places to find out how n it'll make all your hunting cheaper. Just see no dif
  16. A good knife. Something bout a knife pop or grandad gives you. Special meaning
  17. A youth hunter can certainly harvest a bear. They're soft and die very easily. What's the difference bear or deer except a shorter recovery w bears?
  18. Turkeyfeathers come to northern NJ. You'll see enough to be sick of em
  19. Core it's best imo to shoot 12 o clock on the pin n put that just under what you'd like to hit. Also 200-300 shots wax is good but if it's hot more could be in order at times. Just a fyi
  20. Ive heard the wind mentioned a few times next is rest your spots. The fresher they are the easier the hunt
  21. Main thing is draw length which you can screw up if you don't have proper form. Ask him to correct you if you over draw. Now he can't possibly set it up until You bring the release Youre using along n get measured w it. Next is arrows. Yes weight heavier or lighter on the tip can make the arrow more or less stiff but what if you need say 145gr field points or more to accomplish what you need. You'd tune the bow n how would you hunt w it? You need broadheads n they should match field point. Id personally advise getting arrows that match n will make life easier. The rest he should know, good luck
