  1. What I do is start at the rear legs, make a cut all the way around the leg, then I slip my knife, side of the blade toward the muscle, under the skin and wiggle it a bit to each side, then turn it so the cutting edge is toward the skin and start cutting the skin from between it and the meat. I then start peeling the skin down. It just makes it so theres not alot of hair getting cut sideways and going all over the meat and floor.
  2. Some stands Ill be in before daylight, maybe 30 mins before first light. Others I wait till it gets light and stillhunt my way in.
  3. No different than Ford and Chevy. Ive seen those rusted out in 5 years as well.
  4. Culver showed me that trick years ago, it works great. Alot less hair everywhere.
  5. If you decide to sell, let me know. Id take it with the bad tranny if the price is right
  6. The 6.4s are great engines. Im trying to get my hands on an inexpensive Apache version (SRT) for when my 5.7 gives out or I just decide to do the swap, whichever comes first. The only real issue with them is they dont get good mileage at all. How much are you towing normally? The 5.7 doesnt have much less in the HP and Torque departments than the Eagle (HD) 6.4 and tend to do a bit better in the mileage department. What kind of shape is your 99 in? Is it a singlecab? I might be interested in taking it off your hands if you sell it.
  7. There are actually quite a few out there that spend 4 times as much time teaching as they do hunting or killing. I do agree that there are a large number of shows that are complete garbage, you just have to weed through them to get to the good ones. Having a DVR, to record the good ones, means not having to sit through the crap after a bit. There have been many shows of the educational type mentioned on here. Maybe give a few of them a shot sometime. I dont know about you, but Im always keeping my eyes open to learn new tactics and see whats going on with wildlife studies and things like that.
  8. Personally, I would get that stand up higher or put it in that triple tree you showed. I dont actually have many stands in single trees, but I have killed deer out of every single one that I do. The trick Ive used is to be up at the 16 - 18 foot mark. The other guys I hunt with hate a couple of my stands, but they are proven deer killing spots. Heres the stand I killed my buck out of last year. Noone sits in it but me because they all say its horrible. Good, they can stay out of it lol. Ive had more mature buck sightings from this one than any other stand on the property.
  9. Nah, not that one. My girlfriend's uncle has a 400 acre hunting ranch right around the corner from my house. Theres a 250" + buck in there that has drop tines that darn near touch the ground when he lays down.
  10. I could probably get him into one in a pinch hahaha.
  11. Raptors are great quads, gobs of power, but the center of gravity is too high IMO. Slap a set of extended A arms up front and a wider axle out back and it does wonders for handling. The 700 engine is great, pretty much the same as I have in my Viking SxS. Knock on wood, Ive had it for 3 years with zero issues. I just change the oil when I need to and thats it. If I were to buy a sport quad at this point, Id have to be looking for one of the Kawasaki KFX450Rs from a few years ago. I rode one when I was looking for a SxS just to see how it was. I love love love the Suzuki Z400, great quad, handles just how I like and plenty of power with reverse to boot (I hate getting off a bike to push it backwards when in tight spots). The Kawi 450R just adds more power to the mix. Its a blast. If I couldnt find one, Id grab a Z400. For an all out race quad, it would be the Yamaha YFZ450, but I have zero aspirations of ever racing quads again lol.
  12. You could build one with 5 4x4s, a couple of 2x4s, an eye bolt and a cheap gambrel from Walmart for less than that. Do you have a tree in your yard with a large enough branch?
  13. I drive through Victor almost every morning. Theres a few monsters that live right near town. I see them quite a bit near the little car wash and Tim Hortons.
  14. She got knocked pretty good. Doesnt look any worse for the wear though. Hopefully one of these days we will get to see her with her 7-08 laid across a great deer! I have never been scoped or had any other injury from a gun besides a bruised shoulder when I was a kid shooting a 12 gauge for the first time, and some bruises from shooting 3-4 rounds of clays per day with my old Over/Under 12 a few times.
  15. Had a decent buck cross the road in front of me on the way to work this morning. Last 2 days of work before my first 4 day weekend. Come on Saturday!
  16. So new rule. I’m sick of moving political crap into the politics section. If you post something political in any other section, I’ll delete it period.
  17. Im using the Easton Bloodlines 20" arrow (10.5 gpi) with Nockturnal lighted nocks (35 gr) on them. For broadheads Ill be using the Rage Crossbow X heads in 125 grain. If you add in the @ 25 grains for the broadhead insert, and say 10 grains for each fletch it comes out to around a 425 grain total weight arrow. They should hit pretty hard. Im not sure of the gpi on the factory arrows. You can see the Eastons in the pic above, with the red and white fletchings.
  18. The 45 yard dot is pretty close at 40 with the heavier arrows, I just hold the intended target at the bottom of the circle. The 55 yard dot is off by a good 5 inches, so I have to hold over quite a bit with that one.
  19. Also, I modded my quiver a bit, as I hated taking arrows out of it and putting them back in. I used a razor knife to cut the rubber arrow holder off that is closest to the "cup" part of the quiver. It works much better now.
  20. Just one word of caution, with the heavier arrows and broadheads I went with, it made it so that the factory BDC scope is no longer correct at 40 and 50 yards. Youll have to hold those dots a bit over your intended target spot. Not a big deal, just something to keep in mind. The factory arrows they send with it are garbage. Im keeping mine just to unload the bow with after a hunt.
  21. Ill probably start this weekend. Ill also be setting up a mock scrape with a licking branch from another property and a scent dripper this weekend.
  22. I found pics of Moogs arrows with the old 2 blade heads on them.
  23. Gotta tip those telephone poles your launching with the appropriate sized broadheads!
  24. Ive used different scents over the years with no luck at all. Last year, after reading alot about when and how to use it, and going off of the advice from a couple of guys on here, I gave estrous scent another try. I used Code Blue Standing Estrous. I used it on a drag and then hung it on two scent wicks, one on either side of my stand at around 20 yards. The first evening I was there with it, I had a young buck following the drag trail and sniffing the wicks. The next day I repeated the drag and wicks and ended up killing a nice 3 1/2 year old buck that came in sniffing the air with his lip curled. I never let him get to the wicks, so I cant say with 100% certainty that he came in to them, although he was on a trail headed right toward it and the wind was going to where he came from. This happened on Election Day. Im sure that being successful with scents has to do with using it at the right time. Ill be using it in another week and a half or so.
