Would You Support a Blaze Orange Compromise?
WNYBuckHunter replied to wildcat junkie's topic in Deer Hunting
I can say that I dont wear it during bow season because I am not as concerned about being shot at by someone that is 100 or 200 yards or more away. I would have no issue wearing it during bow season if I thought it would be of any type of advantage though, deer see it as a shade of grey, thats all. I have deer within bow range of me all the time during gun season, when I have my blaze hat/vest on. The only reason I wear blaze is so that other hunters see me. -
By definition, they are not universal

Mike, are you reading my entire post, or just what you want to before you fly off the handle? "Im not saying I agree or disagree with any of this, or what my opinion is, Im just asking you questions. When exactly did I say a bird let loose in a field was different than shooting a deer behind a fence? You sure do assume alot."
-
riiiiiiiight....... I bought a cough silencer once.
-
Why is a deer pushed to you by a person different than a deer pushed to you by a dog? Why is a deer going to a food source different than a bear going to a food source? I asked about bird hunting with a dog in general. Why is a bird being spooked to your gun different than a deer spooked to your gun? Im not saying I agree or disagree with any of this, or what my opinion is, Im just asking you questions. When exactly did I say a bird let loose in a field was different than shooting a deer behind a fence? You sure do assume alot.

So then, is everyone a slob, because "nobody knows them all" or are you just saying that because you have fired off several statements lately that could be construed as you not knowing the regs?
-
IIRC I got mine at Biekirchs If you can't find any and want to give them a try, let me know. I have a few I could give you.
-
sloppy in your opinion. Whats your opinion on hunters that are out there that dont know the regulations? Are they slobs?
-
But using that line of thought, any animal that was spooked to you, and you killed it, was not hunted by you. Deer drives are not hunting? How about sitting in a stand waiting to ambush a deer thats moving through a heavily used funnel? How is that different than killing a deer thats on its way to a bait pile? What about hunting orchards, or food plots, etc etc etc? Now lets get away from deer, how about bird hunting? How do you quantify that? They are found and flushed by the dog, is that hunting? Ive been to deer farms, watched my kids feed monster bucks apple slices, pet them, etc. I know of a local deer farm that raises the deer in a barn with a small pen right behind his house and a few other houses, then trucks them over to his 300 acre fenced in lot when someone is on their way to purchase their animal and shoot it. Thats the kind of stuff I dont call hunting. If you are talking about 1000+ acres fenced, with deer living in there, not raised in a barn or that are accustomed to contact with humans in a non predator/prey situation, then its a different story to me. As far as the OP goes, you can compare Ethics to Laws, but you cannot construe them to be the same, or even similar. One is a set of rules laid down by the government, the other is a set of personal values held by an individual.
-
No, I dont call it hunting. Sorry, but shooting an animal in a pen that it cant escape, that lacks the normal fear of humans is not hunting to me. I dont have a problem with people doing it, but it is not hunting. Now ask me about what goes on inside a fenced area that is as large/larger than the typical deer's home range.... See, you dont seem to understand that issues are rarely black and white to me. High fence is an issue that has many shades in my eyes. I do in fact, see dog hunting as a viable form of hunting, no matter what species you are using the dogs for. As long as its legal in the area you are doing it in, its fine by me. If a bear, or mountain lion, or raccoon, etc is treed by dogs, and you shoot it, thats fine.

Would You Support a Blaze Orange Compromise?
WNYBuckHunter replied to wildcat junkie's topic in Deer Hunting
I would support either of the two changes. While I agree that those that shoot others are being reckless whether Blaze is being worn or not, you are a fool if your not wearing it during gun season. Just my opinion. I would also support a change to 1/2 hour before sunrise/after sunset. It works just fine in lots of other states. -

Thanks! Heres a few pics of the buck that came through Sunday. These were taken on Halloween afternoon @ 1pm on one of the plots at the other end of the farm from this stand. Wish I would have been there, hes broadside 30 yards from a stand, in a shooting lane in the head on pic. -
I use Federal Shotgun Primers, give them a try, they work great for me.
-
Actually the elitism comes from the guy that calls someone getting gas before they go hunting a "slob".
-
Ive been in that situation, and shot the deer. A bunch of times I did it in a cop's presence, with their full permission to do so. Flame away....
-
Then there are others that dont have a problem with killing any hand raised animal behind a fence, just dont call it hunting.
-
Why? Because people are talking about aging a deer? Some people are interested in taking an older class of deer. If you arent, fine, but to put others down for doing what THEY want to do is BS.
-
Which makes ethics completely arbitrary.
-
Mine shoots pretty consistently with the BH209. The first second and third are pretty close to each other, after that they seem to drop a little.

Headed out to the same stand as yesterday at around 1:30. At about 3, i caught movement about 150 yards away, on a field edge and saw two does being chased by a big 9 that I have been after this year. I saw him run them out into the pasture behind my stand, and around in a few circles. He never did get into a shooting lane, but spent about 10 minutes at less than 200 yards running those does. Talk about frustrating. Right around 3:30, i heard some twigs snap off to my right. Coming right up a small creek bed, was a good doe and a button buck. For almost 10 minutes i watched them wander around, and then the doe stepped out onto the ATV trail that is right by the pasture fence, and I let her have it. Put one right in her neck and dropped her in her tracks. I stayed up in my stand until 4:15 and then got down to watch the open pasture in case the does and the big 9 came back out into the pasture. Right at 4:20, the does came back out of the thicket and stood out in the pasture at about 125 yards like silouette targets begging me to take a shot. I resisted, only because i hoped the buck would come out to harass them some more, but no such luck. I headed to the ATV and came back to get my doe taken care of. The freezer is filling up nicely, still room for a few more in there though : ) -
Ethics are also man made. They are the values you hold true to yourself. There are plenty of people that dont see breaking the law as unethical.
