I dont agree with that at all. If you limited it to 1 buck per season, more guys would be choosy instead of knocking down the first buck they saw. Why put another restriction on what you can shoot in place, just say "hey, you can shoot whatever buck you want, but you can only shoot 1 of them." and I bet youd have less complaints than if you try shoving your antler standards down everyones throat. Armadillo! I ran one of those over once when I lived in Florida. Funny little critters.

Your bow/ML either sex tag is good for early archery or late archery/ML seasons ONLY. You cannot use it during the regular gun season. Your regular season buck tag can be used for antlered only during regular gun season, or as an either sex tag in late archery/ML season. You can shoot 2 antlered deer in most of NY per season. There may be exceptions in specific zones that have other programs in place.

NY #1 in worst state to deer hunt in
WNYBuckHunter replied to HectorBuckBuster's topic in General Chit Chat
I read that article. It doesnt sound like the person that wrote it has hunted in many, if any, of the states he blasted for having poor hunting. He based it off of general harvest numbers, and weather conditions. NY has alot of hunters, the land is broken up into small chunks, which equals pretty heavy pressure on the deer, and unless you own the oddball huge chunk of land, or get a bunch of neighbors together to do a Co-op, you are just going to have to deal with it. I think that for what NY is, the hunting is pretty damn good. Ive read the same sort of complaints that we have here on other state hunting forums as well. -

Try a sense of humor on for size sometime. BTW, if youre gonna throw an accusation out there, why dont you back it up, and show me where Ive been "looking for an angle to break the law" before, since Im "always" doing it. -

But she can go walk through the brush till her little heart is content. -
Not true. For any damage permits, there is a process that the DEC puts the farmer through to approve them. DMAPs are a little easier to get, but for DDPs, they come out and do a pretty intensive survey of crop damage, etc. The only DDPs I have ever seen that allow bucks to be taken are given to nurseries and christmas tree farmers. They do not exclude "big bucks" either.

Good luck this afternoon! Make sure to post up pics of the new ride when it gets there!

2014 HuntingNY Whitetail Challenge
WNYBuckHunter replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in 2014 HuntingNY Whitetail Challenge
Guys, read the original post. Entry deadline was Sept 28th. -
You cant compare it like that. You would have to look at all of the mature bucks killed in NY and figure out the percentage that are 140+ 8 points. If you put 1 1/2, 2 1/2 and even most 3 1/2 year olds into the equation, youd skew the results. Those age classes of deer have little to no chance of reaching those dimensions. Not sure what fantasy talk you are referring to. Genetic manipulation, culling, etc has not even come into the conversation.

Theres alot wrong with the soil in many parts of NY. You can look at soil and mineral maps, then look at where the majority of active agriculture is (AKA grain farms), then take into account where the majority of big bucks come out of, and you get the picture. The more minerals absorbed into the food source that the deer eats, the more of its genetic potential shines through. I agree, the genetics may be different out there, but the sheer amount and quality of the food sources is better as well. For comparison, just look at the average mature buck on the farm I hunt vs the average mature buck less than 1/2 hour south, in an area that doesnt have quite as good of soil. Similar genetics, but the quality (mineral content, etc) and quantity of food makes all the difference in antler growth. Most mature bucks (4 years and older) that we see on our farms are not 8 points, they are 10 or more.

Yep, long legs, smallish front shoulders. Classic 2 year olds.

Contraception on LI? I have heard talk here and there, but have yet to see it in action. Links to such programs?

I dont complain about the neighbors unless they do stupid stuff. Last year I complained about one because of two of the deer he wounded with irresponsible, horrible shots that should have never been taken. As far as what they shoot, thats their call, who am I to judge? As long as they do it legally, and ethically, then its fine by me. Do I get bummed when they shoot young bucks? Sure, but Im not going to judge them for their choice. Am I one of those guys? I dont think so. I have my goals, and I really try to stick with them. Do I make mistakes from time to time, sure. Its a pretty unfair statement to say either you complain about your neighbor or you are the one they complain about. I just dont buy into all the doom and gloom. Hunting in this state has never been as good as it is now IMO. QDM is on the rise, guys are passing young bucks more and more, and educational organizations are doing a better job spreading the word. Again, my opinion based on what I persoanlly see around me.
