  1. BTW, I corrected the title of the thread. Maybe that will help alleviate some of the confusion.
  2. Apparently you are one of the guys that are confusing the abbreviations. QDM is a management plan or style, QDMA is an organization that promotes and studies QDM concepts among many other things. http://www.QDMA.com
  3. You are 100% wrong on that. Try going to the QDMA website and reading up on the real aspects of a good QDM management plan, instead of listening to people that call their QDM program a QDMA program lol. They cant seem to get abbreviations right.
  4. In a QDM co-op, you arent talking about having to teach thousands of people the way to age deer, its a relatively small number. You should be having periodic meetings, and mutual gatherings of the members through the year. Pick up some of the pamphlets, posters, DVDs, etc about how to age deer and distribute it to the members of the co-op. It will sink in eventually through repetition. Personally, I have a little bit easier time judging body characteristics from a distance than counting antler points. You can tell a 1 1/2 year old from a 2 1/2 or 3 1/2 pretty easy if you know what to look for. Now once you get into older class bucks, you will need some skill to tell a 4 1/2 from a 5 1/2, but thats not what you are looking for at this point anyhow.
  5. I thought you meant ARs would help save more 2 1/2s. I see your point now.
  6. I have seen some really big, mature 6's, so I would be opposed to 4 on a side. I have also seen some very tight mature bucks, that never have a spread outside the ears, so I am opposed to that as well. These are some of the reasons I do not agree with mandatory ARs at all. In a QDM environment, the participants should learn how to age deer by looking at body features, not rack size, after all, the real goal of QDM is to harvest mature deer.
  7. How so? How often have you seen a 2 1/2 year old that didnt have 3 points on one side? Mandatory ARs are going to do little to nothing to help that type of a situation.
  8. You still cant "polish a deer off" with a .22LR, so dont do that lol.
  9. Yep, like I said, I was thinking of something else.
  10. Heres the answer.... Q: Can I carry my .22 caliber rim-fire handgun with me while I'm big game hunting? A: Yes, but only during the regular deer season or early and regular bear seasons and only if you have a NYS pistol permit. You may not use the .22 caliber rim-fire as a primary or secondary weapon to take deer or bear. You may not possess a firearm of any description while bowhunting.
  11. I didnt say anything about it being in NY. I googled it real quick and its not the piece of land I was thinking of anyhow. I thought he meant the land near canadice/hemlock lakes. Where did you copy that section from?
  12. Isnt "Fingerlakes national forest" now owned by the state? Or am I thinking of something else? If its an unprotected species in NY, does that make it a non-game animal or are they talking about species that you are not allowed to hunt at any time?
  13. porcupine, red squirrel, woodchuck, English sparrow, starling, rock pigeon, and monk parakeet Thats the list of unprotected species that you can hunt anytime
  14. Yes you can hunt with it, and reds are open all year. It all depends on the piece of public land whether you can target practice or not. The rules for each will be listed online and/or at the parking area(s). Even if it is legal to target shoot there, take your trash and casings with you when you leave. BTW, everytime I take my 22 pistol in the woods, the squirrels disappear. When Im bow or gun hunting for deer, they are everywhere lol.
  15. Nice bow, congrats!
  16. Bobbers and worms from the shore. Hopefully you can get him into some bluegills or something. Make it fun, let him cast it and reel it in all he wants. I started my daughter out when she was 2 1/2, some great memories, dont forget to take the camera! Here she is with her first fish.
  17. Thats a sweet design, and whoever did it did great work!
  18. If its to pack in and out, a good aluminum stand and sticks is the way to go. If you are just gonna hang it, I like the Muddy Outfitter stand and whatever ladder sticks cost me the least. The ones Dicks and Gander have both work fine. The Ameristeps are good too.
  19. Feral cats are a scourge on the environment. Pet cats should have a collar or be kept indoors, the ones that have turned wild should be done away with. Do some research on the subject.
  20. I have done it. The fee depends on the FFL. Jackson in Henrietta is $35
  21. Doing it correctly is pretty simple. Agree to price, meet at a FFL, sign one paper and collect your money. If you are the buyer, you paay the seller then pay for your background check and walk out with your gun. More of a pain than it used to be but not horribly difficult.
