  1. They are both fine. A 223 just needs to be used within its limitations. Hit a deer in the right spot, and its going to die. The 308 would be my personal preference of the two. That being said, I have a 223 that I may take out for a hunt or two this year, now that rifles are legal in my area.
  2. Yep, and its other eye is screwy looking, like the skin under it is being pulled down. Theres no question in my mind that its real.
  3. I gottcha now. Im not sure what they could charge you with, if anything.
  4. You lost me on the rimfire/ no rifle zone thing. Anyway... Ive been asked many times as well, and always answered honestly. Im just saying, if they dont ask, you shouldnt tell. It is not a requirement to tell a police officer that you have a gun on you if they dont ask. There have been countless times Ive had my handgun on me and encountered police, and they never knew it was there.
  5. This bucket is almost gone...time for another...
  6. Not me. Once bow season is done, I get my muzzleloader out and dont look back. I love bow hunting, but as others have said, I get my fix. I enjoy gun hunting as much as I do bow hunting.
  7. Take some thin slices of venison, seasoned with a bit of cayenne pepper, liquid smoke and garlic powder, then dice your jalapenos, mix them in with some softened cream cheese, put a ball of that in the venison slice, roll it up, throw a toothpick in there and put them on the grill until the meat is cooked. Yum!
  8. You do not have to disclose you have a weapon in the car unless you are asked. Where do you get this stuff?
  9. Huh? You dont see the point in donating meat to a program that helps feed less fortunate people, while at the same time helping to control the population of deer? If it wasnt for population control, hunting as we know it, would end up being done away with. Donating the meat, well, that doesnt need explanation. If you dont get it now, you probably never will.
  10. Looks pretty real to me. Look at the hair near the entry point of the arrow. Its possible it happened long enough ago that any blood would be gone. Remember, it gets wet and dewy/frosty out at night, then theres rain. These animals dont head into the house to stay nice and dry lol.
  11. I havent been out, but all reports from the farms I hunt are a bit more young buck activity and thats about it. I have seen some road kills, but not a ton. Last night on my way home, I missed a bruiser buck by about 6" with my truck. My girlfriend missed one on her way home the other day as well. They are moving, but I think it will be another week or so before it really gets good.
  12. Why not just lay in the hole you dig? put the padding or whatever down and lay right in there, no drum needed,
  13. 1 1/2. Look at the body on it. Long legs, lack of front shoulder/chest development, hind quarters taller than shoulders. Easy one to age. Grey face? Come on. Deer markings are all slightly different. You will never affect the genetics of a wild herd. Cull schmull.
  14. If it was right next to the road, chances are it got hit by a car and someone took the head. I see it every year around here. If you find one out in a field, thats probably poaching. Noone is gonna drag it to the road before lopping the head off. Poaching sucks, all you can do is keep your eyes and ears open as much as possible and report them.
  15. Sounds like you are jumping to conclusions here, and alot of them. How do you know what the situation was that led to the arrow in the deer? You cant, so to say theres no sportsmanship in the situation, or that it was dumb kids, or anything but the fact that the deer has an arrow in it, is pure assumption. Deer travel miles sometimes, especially bucks at this time of the year, so theres nothing to say this happened anywhere near your home. As has been said, call the DEC, they will take care of it.
  16. They have a spread restriction, but its only in certain areas.
  17. Ohio is way further down the path, and they did it without ARs. My point on the Midwest states was that none of them had state wide ARs, like some are proposing for NY. Honestly, what difference does it make if your neighbor shoots a 1 1/2 year old 4 point or a 1 1/2 year old 6 point? They are still shooting a 1 1/2 year old. Put some real educational opportunities in place that show people the benefits of having more mature bucks in the herd, and teach them how to identify the young ones that should be passed, without counting antler points. Then youll start to see a real change in attitudes. JMO
  18. Nope. Im just saying it doesnt make sense to me if they want them eradicated, I wasnt saying they wouldnt do it.
  19. Could have done the same thing with a short, simple survey at the time of purchasing your license. Then everyone would have a say, not just 1% of the big game hunters in the state.
  20. Im not saying they all have the 3" rule, just some form of classification rule. I guess it is a form of antler restriction, but not the same type thats being proposed. Shades of grey. The list I pulled is from the QDMA whitetail report.
  21. So then every state with a deer season has ARs?
  22. No, its the classification between antlered and antlerless. An antler restriction makes certain antlered deer off limits completely. If you want to call that an antler restriction, then every single state with a deer season has ARs statewide.
  23. The current "antler restriction" is not in the same league as the proposed AR. Currently, you can shoot a spike with one 2" antler and put it on a doe tag. If the antler is 3", it gets put on your buck tag. Under the proposed ARs, it makes anything less than 3 points on one side illegal to shoot, period. Apples and Oranges.
