  1. Huh. I thought I remember reading that pears are more hardy than apples, and more disease resistant. I know that my pear trees seem to be growing more slowly than my apples.
  2. Sorry, but believing that deer drives and the rest of the gun season tactics just wont work with crossbows, you need to use the same exact methods of hunting with a vertical bow. Its not an opinion, its how it is. Dont believe it? Ask guys that use them in other states. If you care about the future of our sport, then youll realize it all depends on recruitment and continued participation. What has been going on simply hasnt worked. There is no one single solution to the problem, it will take many smaller solutions to start to turn things around. IMO breaking things up further, and making the laws more complicated is not a good idea.
  3. You do realize Im a bowhunter, right?
  4. Tell ya what belo, I challenge you to leave all of your equipment, scent control, tree stands, and your compound at home this year. Pick up a longbow, and get out there on the ground with old school green checkered shirt and jeans with leather boots, and lets see how you do. You really sit there and say that as bow hunters, we are no more effective today than 30 years ago? Theres no way you can say that with a straight face. Not to anyone that knows anything about bow hunting, or the history of it.
  5. Again, if you think gun season style drives, etc are going to be effective with a crossbow, you are either delusional or just have no clue about it. If you think less hunters participating is good for the sport, I say you have no idea what you are talking about. As far as giving them one week? Really? Just more complications. Going on that logic, compounds should only get a week as well. The rest of bow season should be left to True Archery.
  6. Yeah just make sure your yard is free of sticks and rocks and other potential hazards. I walk mine and pick stuff up before I mow, and I only do the back yard that way. The front is small enough to rake if need be. I drilled a small hole right near the lip of the chute, and use a small bungee cord to keep it held up.
  7. "I can hardly wait to hear you proposing that muzzleloaders join us out there and then of course .... why not any kind of gun." "Crossbows are not the end-game of those pushing them." Not the first time youve made this ridiculous leap Doc. You can say it isnt the extreme end of things all you want, but your eyes turn more brown every time you say it. Last I knew, the only group with a dog in the crossbow hunt, pushing for the early muzzle loader season is your precious NY Bowhunters, Inc. You know, the anti-crossbow, I dont wanna share my season with another hunter types? I specifically said that I had never heard a pro-crossbow person want to include guns during archery season, and my statement still stands.
  8. You gonna drop into a prone position in a treestand, or shoot through brush like that? Laying there in the open within bow range typically doesnt fly. But hey, knock yourself out trying lol. Right after you are done, scoop up the quad rail stabilizer for your compound, pop on your bipod or other bow stabilization tool and whack that deer with no movement of the pin in your magnified scope with your lazer range finder hanging off of the riser to tell you exactly what pin to use. LOL, more extremes.
  9. And there we go right in to extremes again. Funny how I have NEVER heard of a pro-crossbow person even insinuate any type of gun being included in bow season, yet it gets thrown out there like its a fact in every debate on the subject.
  10. Go shoot as many as you can, and buy a used one off of the Archerytalk.com classifieds. You cant judge how well you will shoot a bow by listening to opinions. You have to shoot them and see what feels right.
  11. belo, either take the dischage chute off or hold it up when you mow, the clippings wont be left in a long pile anymore, and will disappear into the lawn within a few cuttings. I was having the same problem.
  12. The ONLY people that will see any advantage to a crossbow as far as range is concerned, are newbies and shooters that have a problem drawing a vertical bow. A proficient compound shooter has the capacity to outshoot a crossbow in the accuracy department and shoot at the same ranges. Accuracy comparison is well documented in the competition realm, and the ability to effectively kill game at the same ranges is documented in hunting accounts, and on video. The bottom line is, you still have to get within a similar effective range with either weapon and make the shot to be successful. If you really think typical gun season tactics are going to work any better with a crossbow than they would with a compound, youre delusional.
  13. Yes, in NY they are open year round. Originally sweet old bill was talking about South Carolina opening them up all year, not NY.
  14. I dont need that to tell me Im a Redneck, I live upstate, so its already a given.....
  15. Thats just one of the drainage issues here. This place was not built with proper drainage in mind, thats for sure.
  16. I have a big area of lawn that is well over a foot high, with ruts all around it where Ive been trying to keep up with it. One small area has had 6" of standing water for almost the entire summer so far. Its a big low spot in the yard, and i have to fix the drainage there, but I cant do it without making a massive mess right now. Hopefully we get a nice long dry spell and my buddy can get his backhoe in there.
  17. I have the Viper SS. Its a great climber. Pretty light, and comfortable. Im thinking of adding the foot rest bar at some point.
  18. Wait, they arent open all year? Just kidding. Seriously, I havent heard that. One can only hope though.
  19. The pro-crossbow side isnt trying to stick it to anyone. Its trying to allow choice for everyone. As far as this exchange goes, I just cant understand why you think the antis would want to allow it to become a legal hunting implement without specifically excluding it from any archery season. In other words, they know what the DEC's intentions are, and are trying their damnedest to block the DEC from doing it. They dont seem to care what stands in their way.
  20. Cows dont get CWD, he never suggested he would hunt over it, and its 100% completely legal do do it on a working farm.
  21. They were made into a legal hunting implement for 2 seasons, and allowed into deer season. They are no longer a legal hunting implement. BTW, how is it that your opinion is "Truth be told in full" and another's is "fool hearty"? ehhhh, forget it. Id rather think about food plots at this point lol.
