I havent heard any yet this year other than the one in Marion. There have been a couple of guys post on here about them last year though, and there were articles in the newspapers and internet about guys shooting them last year. Im sure the stories will start popping up.

Ive done it all different ways, ropes, straps, carts, sleds, etc. The way that works best for me if all I have is a rope or strap is to use my knife to cut into the rear legs like you do for a gambrel, then run the rope or strap through that, tie to the legs so that all of the force inst applied to the tendons and pull. If its a buck, drag from the antlers. Sleds work great, as they get rid of alot of the friction between the deer and ground, but for me, carts have worked the best. As long as the tires are big enough, wet or plowed ground isnt much of an issue and brush and blow downs only slow me down a little.

Sniper's on letchworth state park????
WNYBuckHunter replied to Four Season Whitetail's's topic in Deer Hunting
I gottcha. Hopefully your sightings go up. I honestly think I just wasnt using the scent under ideal conditions, but Im usually trying to hunt downwind of where I think the deer are going to come from, so scents have always been a bit of an afterthought to me. Maybe Im missing out. Ill be sure to post the pics. -
Nothing wrong with giving the old farts a break!

Well sure there are exceptions, and yours sounds like it might be one. I was talking more about the 25 or 30 year olds dragging deer out with ATVs down tractor roads across fields and things like that. Just lazy IMO.

They rock Doe, well worth the money. I got mine at the end of one season on sale. I think it cost 30 or 40 bucks.

Sniper's on letchworth state park????

Hunting isnt just about filling tags for me. I like hunting different areas rather than the same ol, same ol all season, which is why I still make a few trips to different pieces of state land each year. I have never had access to as much private as I do now, and Im busy getting to know travel patterns and the other people that hunt the farm. BTW, didnt you pull a rather nice buck out of Letchworth this year already? Even with that, you are still complaining that the hunting hasnt been great lately? Ill almost guarantee that once this weather cools down, its going to get back to being good again. Its slow all over lately, and it has more to do with the warm, wind and rain than anything else. Good luck with the rest of your season! BTW, I dumped the rest of that Pure Heat in a scrape last week and hung a trail cam over it. Im looking forward to seeing how the deer react to the stuff. Never had anything come in to it while I was hunting. -
I dont understand why people say the carts are just ok on flat or smooth terrain. I had to pull mine over a blow down that was over a foot high, with the deer on it, by myself this year and had no problem compared to how it would have been without that cart. I dont even think I broke a sweat getting that deer to the truck lol. I can understand the older guys (55+) using ATVs, but the younger guys that use them, I just dont get. Part of hunting to me is the exercise I get walking in and out of my spots, hauling gear, stalking, etc. The only thing I wouldnt mind getting another ATV for is setting and pulling out stands, and working food plots if I ever get back to doing them again.

Steve, dont forget that anytime anyone has had "proof" it has been proven to be something other than a ML. Ive seen pics of dogs, house cats, bears and bobcats trying to be presented as proof of a ML. With the thousands of trail cams out in the woods every day of the year, all through the state, you would have to think that pics of them wouldnt be tough to get if they were actually here. You can find lots of trailcam pics and other evidence of them out west, where they actually live. The only time I have seen evidence was someone had pictures of tracks made by the one that passed through and was killed in CT, but that wasnt brought forward until after the cat was hit by a car. I would absolutely love to see actual proof of a ML in NY that can be verified.

Sniper's on letchworth state park????
WNYBuckHunter replied to Four Season Whitetail's's topic in Deer Hunting
No problem. I havent hunted the park in a couple of years, but I used to from time to time. Id like to go back one of these days, just been busy with private land. -
Did it once on a car hit doe. It didnt take long for the doe to die, but I wasnt a big fan of doing it, it was just one of those had to be done things. The only reason I did it was because the knife was all I had with me at the time. Id much rather just put a bullet in them and get it over with. Hopefully I dont have to do it again.

Trailcams, treestands and gift certificates for the tattoo parlor are the only things on my list this year. Trailcams and stands are a no brainer, I have a ton of land to cover now lol, and I have a couple of tattoos that need finished and another couple that need to be started. Everyone always complains that Im hard to shop for but I just dont see it. -
Thats too bad. Deer and motorcycles dont mix well.

Yeah buddy, cant wait for some colder temps this week!

I dont think many are telling him he should have handled it differently, I think most of us are just saying what we would have done in that situation.

Sums it up!

Vermont hunter kills self after accidentally shooting friend dead
WNYBuckHunter replied to Jafo's topic in General Chit Chat
Very sad. -
I agree with Doewhacker, I would have let him sit on the doe. I had someone ask me for my tag after they shot a deer once. I did not give it to him, and I no longer deer hunt with him. The same would happen with a family member.
