  1. Great info I'm trying winter peas this year, if it doesn't go well it will be one and done.
  2. What area are you in I'm in 5h? I had the same exact experience last year. Deer would choose wheat from the co-op over the big bag mix.
  3. Yeah winter was tough for sure. I have a ton of spring browse (briars) and clover to help them out. Haven't seen one fawn picture and I had about 10 different does on cam, not good at all.
  4. Looks great! What temp did you pull it out at?
  5. Do it right and no to little sauce is all you need, helps not drown out the smoke. Ribs look awesome enjoy.
  6. Dates are wrong on cams but I have triple the amount of small bucks as last year. Coyote are a problem up here I need to fix it. A couple with potential which is nice to see but in general nice to see an notice in deer population with all the work I've put in.
  7. Well I'm early but beets radishes and turnips are in the ground. Two more late season plots to go in the beginning of August. I agree with sailing finding some rain right after planting is more important then planting on a certain date. I had this 1/2 acre plot seeded about 20 minutes before a hard rain.
  8. Yeah I broadcast into brassicas last year two weeks into September. Deer hammered it after a couple weeks. They preferred wheat over oats that grew great but for the most part weren't touched. Also grew very well lightly broadcast into a first year low ph clover plot. I only bought it do to other posters on here having success knowing it grew well in almost any soil.
  9. I'm going to stagger my plantings as a lesson from last year. Turnips, sugar beets and radishes are going in next weekend, then August 1ish kale and rape. Top seed winter wheat first week of September.
  10. Late to the thread but fat. This goes against most opinion but I would add a little heat if you can without popping the casing as well.
  11. Same question as Sailing but does mowing promote regeneration or by just letting it go to seed does it accomplish the same thing? I have read all about this but would love to have insight from practical use.
  12. I was about 17 and got myself with a .270 I was in a thick swamp and torqued my body to make a shot. Same as others the deer was just fine but i still have a scar on the bridge of my nose. Didnt hurt at all but when my dad showed up and asked doe or buck? My only response was, myself and I got him good. He laughed at me and at the time I didnt think it was amusing. Grew up shooting did six years active military and that was my only time. Lesson learned
  13. I know oats are easy and many have success but I had no luck with oats unless all other food had been mowed down. The soil received more use then from deer. Winter wheat was far superior for me and just as easy to grow. Oats where from WTI pure attraction which is the only product from them I have used but wouldn't recommend. Every area is different as many on this forum will attest to.
  14. A mock scrape I started two years ago is paying off more and more. Bunch of little guys just starting to grow. They seem to value chicory and briars over clover right now. Cam was out two weeks dates are wrong. I only had does till August last year anybody have an idea why I might have so many spring bucks this year?
  15. Tractor Supply has a 41% glysophate thats on sale at the moment. I used it and had success but I also double the recommended amount. Half the price of roundup and works just as well.
  16. Yes it's up at my camp but I can't remember the name of it.
  17. I shot a bear last year in Orange County after he reacted to a fawn call. I saw the bear in a swamp walking away and he turned right around after the fawn call. Not the adk's but the call did bring him in.
  18. http://oneidaswcd.org/access-to-nrcs-conservation-programs/ I already have called and was told it would be a couple months before somebody will contact me because they are back logged. My question is has anyone used this program and how was your experience? Seems like for my setup this would benefit me in the long and short term.
  19. Crop Production Services in Orange County has 80 pound bags for $30. I would say even if I buy 5 bags of 19-19-19 from there it cuts my cost by more then half.
  20. Octopus is so good with some avocado and Pico de Gallo.
  21. Pretty much exactly my plan. Helps reduce weeds as well. Winter wheat was a huge attraction quickly after planting and helps my soil.
  22. This will be my first attempt I've heard good and bad things. I'm in 5h and waited to long to plant my brassicas last year. I'm going to plant two different times and see what happens, I'm thinking 1/2 acre mid July then an acre beginning of August. Third week of August was to late for me last year. Summer annuals are going in on Sunday.
  23. As many I miss growies topics this time of year. I found them to be helpful and thoughtful as to what to plant and why. I have a mix of cowpeas soybeans and sunflowers in my main plot and have three small areas with clover and chicory. What am I missing? Buckwheat, alfalfa, grains, cover crop? Help me out what have you had success with and why? Im talking early season food source but I'm open to any input.
  24. Wow that's ingenuity. I got stuck enjoying turning over my main plot, so I will be attempting the tire harrow in a week or two.
