  1. Plenty of public land in Putnam County. I hit cranberry mountain in patterson when I go on public, but I am sure there are other spots as well. Cranberry gets worked over hard once gun season starts so get out there soon. Good luck. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  2. Out for an early morning sit prior to work in 3G. Situated at a pinch point in a rock wall overlooking hardwood flats. West wind and about 50 degrees. Hunting from the ground pinched between two trees growing next to a rock wall. About 10 mins after legal, heard rustling to the east and figured squirrel. Then saw movement, nice bodied young deer. Spike with slight fork on one side. Unfortunately, dead in the wrong spot with the wind. He made his way to the pinch point and pauses. Licks his nose heavy and worked the wind. I knew he would wind me. Looking dead at me but no clue I was there. He continues to work the wind and then smells me. Tail up and turns, slow run off back where he came from. Stops and looks over his shoulder, then walks 90 degrees parallel to me. Slowly moving, nosing through the leaves and munching on mast. I wait for him to step behind a tree and draw. He moves forward, completely broadside and I bleat to stop him. About 10+ yards away. Relax, let the arrow go, hear the arrow hit him and pass through. He kicks and runs about 50 yards, then slow walk off along a ridgeline. Watch him walk off and mark the point of visual loss. Uggh, I am thinking miss, liver or non-fatal hit. Gave it 30 minutes before I looked for arrow. Found the arrow embedded in a rotted blow down. Heavy dark blood. Uggh, liver shot. On the fence on what to do. Let him sit and search later or push him. I go back to point of impact. No hair visible, track is clear but no blood. Uggh again. Decide to leave him be but walk along a ridge that I can glass back where I lost him. Sit down on the ridge and hit the binos. Spot white belly. Dead deer. Go back to the point of impact and trace his trail. Not a spot of blood visible. Spike is stone dead when I get there. Very little blood outside his body or in bed. Body cavity was filled with blood when I field dressed him. Liver was shredded. In hindsight three mistakes. I'd love to tell you the deer turned on the shot and that's why I hit back, but I'd be lying. First, mistake was target panic, I aimed for deer and not a spot. Second, I pulled the shot and had poor follow through. Third, I didn't follow the arrow and confirm point of impact. I am fortunate and grateful for having taken and found the deer quickly. It was my first recurve kill and I have plenty to learn. Deer is hanging, cavity packed with ice and ready for skinning quartering tonight. Not a p&y but a trophy to me and will provide good food for the family. Many thanks to Moog for giving me advice on getting started with the recurve. I probably will bring out the crossbow to fill doe tags, but bring the recurve back out for regular season. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  3. Thanks Moog. I owe the you a lot for your advice getting started. I wouldn't have been able to seal the deal without your help. Just need to learn how you grow bigger bucks than what I see around me. Thanks for all your help. Much appreciated. Doing it from the ground was a big thrill, though I know that isn't your cup of tea. Heart is still racing 4 hours later. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  4. A spike decided to make a donation to my freezer 15 mins after legal. First take with a recurve. #recurveontheground. Will post story on archery harvest thread once I get on train. No time for Ansell Adams photo, had to field dress and head to office. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  5. Out on private land in 3g. 49° and light west wind. Taking a quick sit this morning before I go to work. Sun is peaking over ridgeline to the east. Might not see any but looks to be a beautiful morning. Great to be out. Good luck all. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  6. Interesting season so far in 3g. More sightings during bow than past years. Great spot and stalk on bedded doe and fawns last weekend. On the other hand, shot opportunities are way down. We had a tornado blow through in the spring that uprooted a bunch of trees. Looks like it has significantly changed travel routes and created new bedding areas. I am not in the right place at the right time. Lots to learn about the property now that it has changed up. Resigning myself that this may be a tag soup learning season to setup for next year. 7. Rock walls are SE NY's response to food plots and ag. They are all over the place and great funnels / pinch points. When we first moved here I wondered what they were all about. Then I tried to dig a garden and realized that six inches below the soil were all these large rocks. No wonder the pilgrims starved. No sightings while I sat out in the mist and fog. On walk back I spotted a number of new scrapes that had been worked. Clearly the lack of sightings is a result of poor woodsmanship and not low activity levels. We should see a lot more movement over the next few days. Weather looks a little better tomorrow and Thursday. Good luck. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  8. Out for more punishment. Had an out and back trip to Lexington, KY yesterday and got home at 1am. Couldn't answer the 5am clock but got in around sunrise for a short sit prior to working from home. Hunting a rockwall overlooking where a few scrapes have opened up. Good luck to all our there. 9. Back out on public land on the ground in 3g. Overlooking a set of benches with trails running through them and fresh sign at about 1000 feet. 51° and light swirling wind. Probably a deerless sit, but won't have the agony of watching the Giants. Good luck to all out there. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  10. Back at it this am. Sitting on private in 3g on a ridge line with fresh sign I found yesterday. 36 degrees and light wind out of north. Leaves extra crunchy so hopefully I hear some footsteps. Here till about 830 then time to coach soccer. Good luck to all. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  11. Tardy post. Didn't have phone with me in field. Went out in 3g on private land for a still hunt as the rain started dying around noon. Favorable conditions for a still hunt, wet ground and gusting winds. Caught movement near a blown down from the tornado last spring. Fawn starting to bed. See another Fawn then a mature doe milling around. Dropped the shoes and pack. Made it to a rockwall about 35 yards away. Didn't risk any further Waited about 30 mins for a shot on the doe. She was bedded quartered hard towards me with her back pressed to the trunk. Wind was perfect crosswind that blew my scent away. After 30 minutes one Fawn ups, stretches and moseys through the blowdown away from me. A second later Doe does the same and is gone. No shot opp. Second Fawn hung around broadside for a while but she wasn't on the menu. She followed mom and sis through the brush after milling around for a bit. I didn't give chase. Seeing a lot more this year but fewer shot opps. Out for a quick sit tomorrow am before coaching soccer and likely public land after soccer. Congrats on the successes posted and good luck to all tomorrow. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  12. It is not well written. This is how i understand it. Crossbow is available as an implement for the last two weeks of early bow season. You can use any tag that is available to you in that season that is unfilled. If you have a muzzleloading license you will get a bow/muzzleloader early season either sex. If you also have a bow license, you will get an addition bow/muzzle anterless tag. Either of those tags can be used in the crossbow season if they are unfilled at that point. 13. I skin and quarter usually same day. Then leave them in an cooler packed with ice. Ice on the bottom, two by fours across the bottom, racks on two by fours and meat on top of the racks so they are not getting wet. Check temp on it couple times a day. Drain water/blood and replenish ice if needed. Leave in there until ready for boning, butchering and packing for freezer. I am probably doing something wrong, but it has worked for me so far. Tender, no gaminess and delicious. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  14. Up late this morning and in the woods around 7. Walking to the intended spot I heard turkeys roosted in a ridge about 100 yards away. Walked to what I presumed was the likely flydown spot. Spotted them with binos and waited. They eventually flydown 90 ° to me across a creek and on to adjacent private. Gave a quick chase for the unlikely chance they came back on my land. No dice and long gone over next ridge. Very exciting and first time for me. Back in initial intended spot. Light Southwest wind, overcast and Misty in 3g. Good luck to all. 15. Sorry late post. Rain lightened in Putnam County around noon and I went out for a slow walk through private. About halfway through my circuit I got to about 10 yards away from a blown down oak and started scanning with binos. When I got up, my next footfall made a large sound cracking a branch and a mature buck that was bedded in the oak's branches sprung up and trotted off. I had no clue he was there (hapless woodsmanship strikes again) but by the look on his face he was just as surprised. Tried to grunt him to stop but he was having none of it. I think it was large 9 that has been hanging out here lately. First time I have seen him live if it was. He was bedded five yards away from me. Great experience, know what I'd do different next time and at least I know an area he is bedding in. Good luck to all tomorrow. Rain is supposed to stop around here tonight. Should make for better conditions. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  16. Listen to his two part podcast on being attacked by a brown bear on Afognak. It is wild. His books were very helpful to me as well. Randy Newberg is another great binge watch and podcast. I connected with him once and he is a real nice guy. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  17. Got home early from work for a quick sit. Doe and Fawn feeding 100 yards into woods. Stalked the doe to about 50 and then she picked up movement. Stare down for five minutes then she started to make off. Grunted and got her attention but no interest. She and fawn trotted off slowly. Moved to a spot I think they may work through based on their travel path. Hope it happens in next 15. Getting dark. Good luck to all out. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  18. The squirrel had size 13 feet so I had about 30 seconds of excitement until I realized what was making the sound. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  19. My punishment continued. Three hours in the woods. One gray squirrel and two hikers. At least my mammal count is going up. Congrats to those who connected. Back out at week's end. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  20. Glutton for punishment. Trying to change up luck and sitting overlooking a bench on a new spot in public land. Tough swirling wind and cool but still least I don't need to waste time watching the Giants today. Good luck to all out there. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  21. Called it around 1030. Slow walk back to see if I could pick anything moving. Only saw one gray squirrel. At least it was something. May head back out tonight. Good luck to all. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  22. Sun is poking through cloud cover. Hopefully that prompts them to get off their a$$ and start moving. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  23. I'd take a squirrel running through right now. Dead quiet. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  24. Back at it. Light rain over night softened up leaf litter for a quieter entrance. 48 degrees and light sse winds. Here till soccer practice. Good luck to all. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
