  1. Do you hunt CT? Worth it in terms of opportunity for a public land hunter? Always wondered as I pretty much live on the border. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  2. It does make my morning and evening train rides a little more enjoyable. I do end up getting pretty confused at some point about what we are arguing. Sometimes I feel like I am watching news coverage of the Syrian civil war, trying to figure out on whose side I am. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  3. I am working from home tomorrow and plan to post over my neighbor's Arborvitae for an early morning sit. They will look like ice cream cones in a few weeks. I am going to ask him if I can sit in his minivan in his driveway to stay warm. [emoji3] Good luck to all still out there. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  4. I thought we usually waited until after predator season wrapped to have this argument. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  5. Quiet sit in 3g while the Giants tried every way possible to give away a game. After the two doe I kicked up on arrival nothing else moved through. Good luck to all those out there this week. I am probably done until Friday or Saturday. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  6. Out in the mist and fog in 3G. 46 degrees, barely any wind. Bump two does getting settled in. They hung for a while then moved off. Not on the menu. Hopefully something comes to check out their trail. Good luck to all out there. Very eery here, like a Stephen King novel. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  7. Was hoping you would connect this am. I pulled the plug early with zero sightings to get a jump on Christmas decorations at the house. On the bright side, I finished smoking venison kielbasa from the doe I poked last weekend. For a first attempt not bad. Weather is supposed to suck tomorrow. I may give it a go if I wake up and it isn't pouring. Good luck if if you change your mind and get out there before the season is up. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  8. Good luck Biz. Heavy fog here in 3G. Very low visibility. I think a deer would need to tap me on the shoulder for me to see it. Hope it's clearer by you. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  9. This is a recipe I do for backstraps as a change up. https://jesspryles.com/recipe/venison-backstrap-with-blackberry-sauce/ Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk

    Ticks

Buck I killed in early November was loaded with them. After the Thanksgiving cold snap in lower NY I took a doe that didn't seem to have a single one. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  11. Born in NY. Went to college in NC. Graduate school in MA. Have lived in VA, MD and CT. Driven across country a few times and visited most of the lower 48 (missing Pacific NW and upper Midwest). Wife and I have settled and raised our kids in NY. My primary reason. Can't get good rye bread or pizza anywhere else. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  12. Old bull and young bull stand atop a hill overlooking a pasture of cows. Young bull says, "Let's run down this hill and screw one of those cows." Old bull says, "No. Let's walk down and screw them all." Some lessons are only taught with age. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  13. Doesn't necessarily help you now but this is what I do with my deer. I don't really have a place to hang for extended times nor a deer fridge. I usually skin and quarter my deer as soon as I get them home. I then put them in my Orion cooler. Ice on the bottom of the cooler, two two by fours set on the bottom of the cooler then racks on top of the ice and 2×4s. I put the quarters on the racks then loose cuts in a tray that sits on top. Let it sit in there for a controlled environment to personal preference. Also works well for transporting from deer camp to home. Like I said doesn't necessarily help now but maybe a thought for the future. Congrats on the success. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  14. Late post. Phone died as I tried to get updates on the brutal Giants game. Doe and Fawn came in hauling ass before 4pm. Mom was looking over her shoulder so I was hopeful something would be following her. They stopped about 20 yards from me and slowly made there way browsing to me. Seemed like hours, but was probably a few minutes. Nothing was showing behind her and legal light was getting close so I made the call to fill the dmp. Waited for her to step into open and let an arrow fly. Good shot, double lung. She hauls out of there, Fawn shoots off in opposite direction. She starts to get wobbly, leans while she is running and runs smack into a tree. Drt. Never saw anything like it. Back to another the thread, I think my shot was fatal but cause of death was blunt force trauma to the cranium from the tree. Quite sure the tree wasn't going to stake a claim, so I felt comfortable filling out the tag. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  15. Out for final sit of Thanksgiving vacation this PM. Figured I would do the Giants a favor with my lucky charm of not watching. Kicked up a doe on walk in. She appeared out of thin air and disappeared back into the same thin air. No snow, no green gives them a nice advantage. My eyesight and woodsmanship are woeful. Hopefully she didn't go too far and brings back some company. A balmy 49 and no wind in 3g. Good luck to all out there. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  16. Action was on a little north of you. Had a coyote pass through at legal light and spook a bedded doe. She hung around for a while but zigged instead of zagged and moved off without a shot opp. Hell broke loose around 9. Two mature does ran through, thought the coyote had hung around and spooked them as well. Minutes later small buck comes on their tail following head down and hauling ass. Minutes later big buck comes through on a mission. Didn't id him, but nice sized rack and body. Tried grunting and bleating but he wanted none of it, straight on a line on the doe trail. Quick moved to another spot that I guessed they would move through. Kicked up the doe that had worked her way through earlier. Settled in and 15 minutes later the group worked their way through but way out of range and on to neighbor property. Died after that. Back out this evening. Lone big doe worked her way straight towards me but downwind. She came to about 20 yrds and the stopped head on. Sniffed hard for a few, then turned and slowly went back the way she came. Hunting from ground is tough. Brief opp when she turned but I thought she would run off on to neighbors property and I didn't let one fly. Nothing followed her. Coyote walked through as legal light fell. Exciting day all in all. Hope the action moves your way. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  17. Biz I hope you are out. Looks like a few does just got hot around me. Lots of action but no shots so far this am. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  18. It is a reasonable way, the only complication is it puts a lot of the honor on the first shooter to stake or relinquish the claim to the kill. I would tend to put the deference to the first shooter and let them make their move one way or the other. There are other deer in the woods and frankly it isn't worth getting into a beef over. Just my opinion and I hope if I am the first shooter with a legit claim I meet a second shooter who feels the same. On your other hypothetical, my test is always what I would tell my son to do. First, I would tell him that he should have some identification from the other shooter of the deer (size, where shot, pts, etc) so he could positively id the deer before a fatal shot to put down. If can make that id, take the shot. Second, if he can't identify but the deer is clearly suffering (lame, gut shot, bad head shot, etc), put it down. Sometimes the ethical thing isn't the legal thing to do. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  19. This is from the hunters education course my youngest is taking. The “Rule of First Blood” The “rule of first blood” establishes a fair way to determine who can claim an animal that has been shot by two hunters. Although it may not have legal grounds, its strength and enforcement lie directly with understanding and true sportsmanship by all responsible hunters. The first hunter to place a shot in an animal’s vital area, which draws enough blood to leave a trackable trail and thus has a good chance of bringing the animal to his or her possession, may claim the animal. Conversely, if the first hunter feels that the wound was superficial in nature and recovery of the animal was not likely, that hunter should give up claim to the game if another hunter brings it to the ground. 20. On to a public land sit before I have to take a 4pm call. Two bad signs. First, as I am parking a fork horn runs out of the brush and onto private land next door. Second, a stream was a little higher than anticipated, I tripped and have one soaking foot and one soaking glove. Thank God for wool. Neither of those sound like tidings of good luck, but I will give it a go. Overlooking a hardwood flat pinched by an oxbow stream. Never sat here before and it can't hurt. Good luck to all out there. 21. Back at for more in 3g. Kicked up a doe / button on walk back yesterday. Played cat and mouse for a bit as I tried to figure if she was a he. Eventually whatever it was scooted out of dodge. Posted on a rock wall this am. Saw some movement ways out while still dark and a headlamp on neighboring property. Hopefully something gets pushed to my side of the property line and not vice versa. 35°, drizzling and light west wind. Good luck all. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  22. Same for me. Some deer tracks in snow but lots of paw prints. Changed up spot after early morning. Trail overlooking a hillside. Warming a bit. Hope rain stays off. Good luck. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  23. Sounds like the same thing. In West Marine they are called anchor lines and Cabela's they are called recovery ropes. The metal grommet makes it easy to connect. I leave one in the back of my beach truck. Lots of Honda CRVs have been saved from places they shouldn't have been. Good luck getting it out. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  24. I know nothing about atvs so apologies in advance if this is stupid. I don't know what a recovery rope is, but if you have a marine supply place around you, you may be able to pick up an anchor line that would do the deal. I have used the same to pull trucks and trailers out of soft sand on the beach. Just a thought if you end up getting in a pinch. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
