  1. Hats off to you. They did a junior circuit show during the intermission where 13 year olds road young bulls. I can't imagine how parents watch. I have enough angst watching my sons slalom. Can't imagine watching them on a bull. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  2. Went to the championship round for the opening PBR event at the garden. Was with my pops and family for his 74th birthday. 21 year old kid won the event on final idea after getting knocked cold on his previous ride. These guys are tough as nails. On a funny note, PETA was outside the garden protesting animal cruelty. Clearly they have never watched an event. If anything, Amnesty International should be there protesting human cruelty. Those dudes, particularly the rodeo clowns, take a beating. Great day. Highly recommend to anyone in the area next year. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  3. Not to add confusion to the mix but horsefeathers in Tarrytown might be a convenient Midway point. I haven't been there in twenty years, but throwing out the idea based primarily on location. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  4. Thanks for thinking of me. I am fairly boring and a teatotaller at this point in my life so I will enjoy vicariously from a distance. Bars and I have an unfortunate history. Enjoy the gathering. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  5. I just wish you were left handed so I could buy out of your used inventory. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  6. Take him up on the offer. He got me hooked. I have to date, however, been able to avoid the multiple bow addiction. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  7. I was gonna go that route but the skis are too long for the bed. With the bindings I wasn't sure I would have enough of a diagonal to fit the skis. May have worked for regular skis but my sons' racing skis are a bit too long. I don't know anything about skis either (I don't ski) other than they are very expensive. 8. Definitely guessing skis. I have an extended cab, short bed and skis are an awkward load in the bed. Too expensive to let bang around on a four hour trip and too awkward to strap down. I didn't go with the cargo box, but a ski rack on the cab to hold 6 pairs. Let's me get access to the bed without unloading skis. There are other options but this works. 9. I bought my only compound used about 7 or 8 years ago. I bought a low end recurve xbow a year or two later. I bought a takedown recurve bow last year. I am going to continue to use each until something breaks on them and it isn't worth repairing. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  10. My youngest got a gift card from relatives for Dicks at XMAS. He needed a new set of basketball shoes so we went to the one in Danbury, CT New Year's Day. I have not been there since they announced their changes. Usually, at this point in the year the hunting supplies are sold out and whatever remnants are left go on clearance. It looked like the week prior to bow opener with the amount of gear, apparel, stands, etc. that they had in store. I am guessing a lot of inventory had not moved all season. This also included probably 4 pallets of deer corn. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  11. I think the prior have covered a bunch. The other advice I would give... If you don't do it already, advance e-scout the public land to familiarize yourself with the topography before you put boots on ground. Look for natural pinches, saddles, benches with the right exposure for bedding, etc. Helps put some priority on your in person scouting missions. I use huntstand, but any GPS mapping app is a great assist. Also, start turkey hunting if you don't already. You can combine scouting / hunting for turkey with early scouting for deer. Good luck! 12. I fancied myself a fighter in college until my last brawl at a bar. One of my friends started it, I joined the fracas until I suddenly found myself dangling from the air. The nose tackle from the football team, who went on to a brief NFL stint, picked me up by the scruff of my neck. Last thing I remembered was flying through the door of the bar helplessly. At that point, I decided I was a lover not a fighter. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  13. Just did the same. My only advice is err on the side of longer rather than shorter in the brine. I had an 1/8 slice in the thick part of the roast that the brine didn't make it's way too. Didn't effect the taste at all, you just had a little piece of gray meat. I did mine in the slow cooker with beer and broth equal parts to cover the roast. Started with just onions, then added carrots with about two hrs left and cabbage with one hour left. Came out great. Throwing in the smoker is my next mission. Good luck and post picks. Great way to mix up cooking a roast. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  14. First attempts at corned venison and cabbage. Garlic and parmesan mashed as a side, with home made rolls. Not great presentation but delish. Nothing left. Nap time. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  15. I tried one season to follow the moon activity guides on huntstand and correlate to movement acitivity. I didn't see any correlation between them. What I have noticed over the years is bright moon at night (full or nearly and no cloud cover) during the rut is usually bad sign around me. I assume this means that there is a lot of night time activity and limited day time movement. I always seem to see more day time activity during new moon or with intense overnight cloud cover. 16. Moog can probably opine on this as our resident lawyer, but this reads different than a ban. It is a clarification saying the bump stocks should never have been legal as they violate the pre-existing ban on fully automatic weapons. I interpret this to mean that DoJ is clarifying to say you are violating the law already and are given the opportunity to abandon rather than be prosecuted for it. I don't think it gives a precedent to do the same with firearms that were legal at time of purchase. But... I work in technology not law so what do I know. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  17. Sat until legal light. Saw nothing, but a calm end to the season for me. Walked around a bit where I shot two does and finally found both arrows. Bonus! Likely the last time out for deer until next October for me unless I head out to Montauk for New Year's. Great season for me. Plenty of sightings, learned a lot (mostly that I have more to learn). Buck during bow with recurve (a first), Doe during regular season on a dmp and first December deer with a fat doe this week. Work was tough for me, but I probably hunted the hardest I ever have. I am beat. Great reading about everyone else's hunts to keep the interest going during lulls. For those still going out there, good luck. Merry Christmas and Happy Healthy New Year to everyone on HuntingNY. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  18. Last sit of the year for me. Finished wrapping missus presents, vacuum packed breakfast sausage and kielbasa, freezer is full and just enjoying my last opportunity until October 1, 2019. 36° and light rain in 3g. Congrats to all who enjoyed their season and good luck to those still out there. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  19. Doe I poked past weekend is butchered and in freezer. Out for what is likely the final sit in 3g. Very foggy, slight NE wind and 43°. Feels like late October! Good luck to all still out there. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  20. I hunted there during a few bow seasons never firearms. At the time at least, there weren't check stations during bow (there was during firearms) but I believe that you needed to carry a land access permit for the state park. The DEC has, or at least had, a special place on their website for East end hunting opportunities with the details and rules. My recollection was there was a phone number listed that I called and got very helpful assistance. It is much thicker than hither hills. Lots of scrub brush and visibility was very difficult. Loaded with deer and Giants, but a hard hunt and even harder recovery. Paths were well maintained but I could only see two or three feet into the thicket on either side of the path Tons of ticks as well. There is plenty to be had there, but you have your work cut out for you. There's a reason they hang there. Best of luck. If I think of anything else, I will post. 21. Son was skiing at Jiminy Peak in MA today and I was going to give a shot on some public land in the capital District. Decided I didn't want to leave him in case, God forbid, anything happened to him on the slopes and took a nice long power nap in the back seat of the truck instead. Plus I wasn't really feeling it. Drove home on 22 all the way. Herds of deer all out in the fields. More deer on the drive than I have seen all season. After seeing that I have to admit I am very jealous of those of you who have good ag lands around them. Just amazing to see compared to hunting the suburban woods. Good luck to all going out for last day of their regular season tomorrow. I will head out for a humbling sit on my less productive woods [emoji3]. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  22. That's what I figured. Looks like pretty easy terrain on the map, nice and flat with a few clear cuts. If I am motivated at zero dark thirty to pack my crap in the truck I will give it a shot. Thanks. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  23. My oldest's ski team is heading to Jiminy Peak in MA for practice tomorrow. I was just called into carpool duty for the trip. I don't ski and am debating throwing the hunting gear in the truck for a public land hunt in the capital area tomorrow rather than sitting in a lodge for 8 hours. I found the Capital District WMA in 4L as a close spot but have no local knowledge. Anyone hit it recently? Not looking for tips or honey holes, just a sense of if it's worth it to bring the gear and if it's mobbed by orange army. Thanks in advance. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  24. Again, I forget. Am I supposed to root for the Baathist's, the Sunni's, the Kurds or the Salafi's? Very confused. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
  25. Thanks. Not too far away from me. May give it a look next year. Sent from my Moto E (4) Plus using Tapatalk
