im not sure what the percentage u should bid but ive found sometimes theres pieces no one else wants and you get a good deal, and large acres there is normally several bidders but i know a guy who got 2acres bordering state land for 400.00 so you never know
-
What percentage of growth to antlers has taken place by now, I got on camera that is just starting to be an 8 pt. Theres is at least 2months of growth left just curious what every one thinks
-
well the clover is looking a lil better as far as growth goes,,,, Also i noticed the apple trees re loaded this year!!
-
Thanks yeah I know won't do much for awhile but I figure I'll do a lil at a time i can only bring it in via atv. and plan on some fertilizer when I plant
-
so as i posted before i didnt get a soil sample this year, my bad. My question is could it hurt anything to put lime down without the test. I was going to put it in the plot that I turned over last week and plan on putting big and beasty in a month or so. Also I dont have a spreader so i was going to put it down in small piles and then use the harrow disc to spread the best i could. its a just shy of a 1/2 acre area was going to start with 300lbs

not to late to start over with a fall plot, if u do i would get it sprayed down do it it a couple times then turn it over and hold off on planting and wait and spot spray the weeds/ferns that pop up and then plant....
-
and a couple kickers
-
also the area i cut in the winter has beds and lots of tracks in it and alot of native browse seems to be doing well plan on doing more this winter when the deer hit the buds from the down trees hard... wild apples also seem to have a good crop
-
well made to the land today the clover really hasnt grown lots of little stuff maybe 1/4 inch and its green and looks healthy just not growing up, some weeds not sure what they are but only half the plot has them... burned off the the other two plots of dead weeds from spraying and turned over one of them.... fire is a great tool made turning the dirt over alot easier...lots of tracks in the clover plot but cant imagine the deer nipping all of it off just seems slow to take off,,,, maybe lack of liming and fertilizer...
-
ferns it appears may be a headache for me to,,,,let me know if u find a soultion
-
well im going with big and beasty in a spot and some oats or something in another spot.... both spots area a about 1/4 acre so not buying bulk seed yet maybe next year when plots get a lil bigger,,, going to turn the ground over next week at this point both spots have gotten two sprayings so weeds are dead, and if any come back more then enough time before planting to spray again
-
when do u guys plant your brassica mixes new at this food plot stuff and the more i read the more answers i get... I've heard any where from mid july to september.... thats for CNY area
-
well checked the clover plot today and the clover is just starting to pop up looks good for now. no weeds seem to be coming back either kinda surprised but hay im not complaining appears the spray did its job..
-
thanks worried to much rain as of late i planted mine 24th have not checked it, an hr ride from home, but its rained every day since and hope that much rain hasn't ruined it the land has decent drainage where it is so no standing water .
-
how long did it take for the clover to pop up
-
I'm sure weeds will be an issue for several years to come, my goal is to keep spraying the places i havent plowed up yet every few weeks then turn it over in the first week of july spray it a few weeks after that then plant for fall plot. As far as the clover spot thats planted its about 90yrds long 30 yrds wide so a lil hand weeding and if it gets over run spray it off and plant something else in august.... trial and error i guess... On a side note the area i clear cut this winter is really doing well the deer loved the buds from the maples etc during winter and the new growth has started to come up.

Well putting my first food plots ever, the clover got planted yesterday... A few lessons learned 1st a tow behind atv harrow plow is ok after the ground is broken up not good for breaking up an over grown weed field, ended up using an old ancient drag found in the woods. Second spray and spray the weeds it really helped. Starting out small is better then trying to go big... got two more fall plots going in later in the year. Didnt have time to soil test and fertilize/ lime so my hopes are not high but just getting the dirt turned over and weeds clear was my main goal this year. so im on track

Dont know if it is true just saw on another site that this bill died in albany and wont be approved again dont know the truth behind it but thats what i read. It also said the crossbow bill allowing the use of them during all bow season is still being considered -
Have hunted this area... like everyone says lots of snow.. a few years the winter just hammers the deer population way down large winter kills... but 400.00 an acre is a real steal anywhere in NY i looked for years before buying land and that price is real good.. also if you like salmon trout fishing and snowmobiles i think the hunting would become second because those two things are great up there..so if you can deal with not seeing many of deer at times and possibly getting feet upon feet of snow go for it. It's not on you if the guy sells it cheaper then he should

theres only about 8 or 10 oaks and just a couple are getting to the point where they have acorns i'm not sure if they are red or white , just north of norwich. thanks for the info. as far as planting in the clear cuts i just want something this year then im hoping natural browse will start to pop up like young maple and briars... im thinking of just some throw and grow...i have three areas where the former land owner had food plots about 5 years ago and they aren't over grown yet just some thin golden rod and misc weeds so those i hope will be my primary food plots, i plan on testing soil ive never planted plots where in the area can i get lime it would have to be in bags just not loose bulk as i got to transport it via atv to plot locations -

Thanks guys this is a good sight been checking it out, Growalot The trees ive been cutting are not a big timber value twisted and croocked soft maples mostley , maybe a few bucks in fire wood $$$ but there are some problems with getting large logs out small trout stream in way to main road $$$ for bridge, dec permit etc I do have some large straight ash trees that maybe worth a few bucks Stubborn yeah much of the hardwoods is useless for habitat other then deer just passing through hope to get the sunlight down to ground and improve some areas, the only thing nice is all i will need is to rake leaves to get to soil for glover seeds -
hello all new to site, I recently bought 90acres in 7m, I hunted it this fall and did well, The land is mostly hill side with a mix of just about everything approx 50acres hard wood, 20acres brush/ golden rod/ mixed with some wild apple apple trees and 20 acres of hemlock. The only thing ive done so far is to drop some maple trees to open the canopy and give deer winter browse , which they are really hitting hard. In the hard woods areas there is no under growth in these areas. My plan is to put in three food plots this year. But also spread some clover and rye seed in the openings that i create in the hard woods just to get some food down for deer and turkeys until new woody browse sprouts up ... I would like to get clover down in early spring. question 1 what is the earliest u would plant clover and some type of rye mixed in?, question 2 Fall planting turnips , rapes etc what time of year? Has anybody had could results in hinge cutting, many of the trees are to big to hinge so they are getting dropped but how important do you feel it is to hinge cut smaller trees
