  1. well i did four plots the biggest being 1/2 acre with just the wheeler , weed killer and old spring harrow... sounds like you got more then enough equipment.... i found that if you kill the weeds and turn over the first few inches of soil up good and plant just before a rain your good to go.... my results were good clover struggled but that was a spring planting and had issues with weeds as summer went on....
  2. nice job, i had a deer swim/walk a creek for over a mile once before r it came out.
  3. great track.....sounds like that deer would have died a slow death with out luna
  4. i always thought aging deer and beef broke down the muscle tissue not the fat,,, i truely think it makes a diffrence in older deer or ones that you had to track... didnt die right off
  5. land 1

    Any 7M action ?

few small bucks harassing does rubs and scrapes showing up, but no real chasing or anything but soon i think
  6. well have not posted my results but cant from camp ive seen deer almost every sit missed a doe passed on a few but lots of time to hunt since i will be retired come the 25th lots of great posts good luck to all
  7. nice job now score him and see who was right
  8. yup tick population differs alot from area to area i hunted one area that was so over run with them that it was un-real found over 60 on my cloths after a couple hrs i actually passed shooting a buck because it was so infested its ears looked like a ball of lil wild grapes i stopped hunting this spot because of the lil bastards.... 10 minutes down the road no ticks to speak of... and where i hunt now going on the second year no ticks so far....
  9. First thing I would say is in no way am I taking sides on this and not commenting specifically to this issue, 1st every time ive delt with ECO's very polite and professional. I've witnessed people saying they were rude when they just where doing there job. example.... Guy is asked by ECO asks is the gun loaded" answer by hunter "No".... "DEC Let me see the gun and checks for himself" Hunter " What do u think im lying".... and then the conversation and interaction starts going south..." another one is a guy gets a ticket for loaded gun. The guy gets out of the woods and is talking with his buddies lays his gun on the seat of truck while they make plans for the hunt.. ECO show up heres your ticket "loaded gun in vehicle ..... Now the guy is pissed but bottom line gun was loaded and in the vehicle... ECO has no idea what took place prior and yeah maybe he should cut the guy a break but if a ECO believed every story from every guy that gets a ticket he would never cite any one....
  10. i think some of this stuff helps some but playing the wind is still your best bet . after just one night at deer camp sent control is pretty much out the window... no shower...between the dogs, smoking, drinking and sweating when the wood stove gets to hot... i think i smell so bad the deer think that cant be a human lol
  11. really enjoy reading these stories keep them coming and great job.... i would like to have a dog like that but there would be no time for hunting....... well at least hunting for my own deer...
  12. i have killed mid day and i got a friend who many times sleeps in and dosnt go out till 9am or so and sits till 2 or 3 weather is a big factor
  13. well the bulbs now vary in size alot the biggest are softball size and some are golf ball size so i guess ill be able to figure what they do at my camp again just another thing they eat that differs from area to area....
  14. i find it funny how every ones results differ on what the deer eat....The deer are hitting my small plots of oats pretty good and they are eating the brassica tops already to the point i dont know what will be left by mid november other then bulbs.... my winter www is lush and growing well and they nip it but not there favorite by a long shot... and the clover is still drawing the deer in... For my 1st year doing plots all is good will just tweek a few things next year...
  15. how do they hit your guys winter wheat the hot spot mix had ww and the deer arn't really into to everything else is getting hard, the ww just kinda gets nipped here and there
  16. give him a week or so to calm down if he keeps busting you he will change up maybe stay away from area or go nocturnal....just my thoughts
  17. ive dumped a few three that i remember 1 buck had an arrow sticking out of its back lost some meet, 2nd was a buck with a broad head between spine and high shoulder no lost meat... third was small doe smelled the rot before i saw her she as shot threw both hips with slug and couldnt she get up covered in mud and been dragging herself in circles coyote food she was really rotting away alive
  18. well i noticed on my camera i have no good bucks if the temps is much above 50 degrees during day and all around deer movement goes way down...and i was shocked this week i got two cameras on 90 acres my dad saw 3 small bucks and the way he described them i have no photos of them cameras have been out since at least july. and my decent bucks ill get on camera for 3 or 4 days then nothing for 3 or 4 days... and i feel its alil early for the big guys to be paying attention to does yet
  19. i re-use my muzzy and use to to re-use montecs i have a lil sharpener that gets them nice and sharp again.... if they r damaged chipped bent etc i replace but i shoot them a few times in a target and just sharpen and good to go
  20. well all i can say is that trail cams are nice to use.... but last year i didnt have one buck on camera till the very end of october after that we saw a good number of nice bucks they had to leave from some where,,, It seems to me when they go from velvet to hard horned they change alot from where there living to travel patterns and throw in changing food sources... i think bucks have a very small area in the summer and during the fall all bets are off for the most part
  21. pigmy rattle snakes are also in ny.... only two area in the whole state tho
  22. well ive hunted state land alot my rule off thumb was this if i get to an area and there is some one else there move on to another area more then once as i walked in i saw some one flash a light they beat e to it... if u know an area has lots of stands ur just asking for company no is entiletled to the spot but first come .....ive not had an issue just be polite and know the guy is in the same shoes u r in public land can be tuff
  23. did the same thing last yr on a doe, right under her i used 20pin and aimed low thus a big wifffffffff
  24. going to try and prune some of my wild apple trees this winter see what happens and drop trees around them blocking the sun and see what happens wont touch the ones that seem to put out alot of apples start with the half dead ones and poor producers and learn from the results i get there
  25. nice job getting a deer on the plot.... Well from what im seeing on my trail cam my food plots and cutting of trees have improved the land... I have a good number of does daily on camera, I also got at least 4 decent bucks on camera not overly regular but they all seem to be around a couple times a week they showed up in late august early september. Last year at this time all i .had on camera was one group of does and two very small bucks never had one over 2 1/2 years old till oct 30th and that was very hit and miss . It might have alot to do with wild apples lots this year none last year. already got plans to drop another couple of acres of trees hinge cut smaller ones drop bigger trees start that towards the end of gun season and chip away through winter, the food and bedding these areas supply is great, and next year double the size of 3 of the 4 plots.... A few things I learned this year 1) if at all possible plant before a rain 2) get the weeds under control prior to planting 3) fertilize and lime 4)if planting spring clover get it in early as possible. 5)mow the clover 6) fertilize after your fall plots again after they get about 3 inches high.....
