Will the world change the way you hunt this season?
Robhuntandfish replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in Deer Hunting
I bought ground beef the other day..... ground beef....i tell ya....Haven't done that in a while. I am hoping to drop three and fill my freezer, give some to family, landowners and friends. 3 good size deer in 2018 was great. I've eaten far too much chicken this year. It tastes like sadness and disappointment. All does are in trouble. Any buck over 5 points in archery and any buck in gun and muzzle season is on the plate -
Looks like a great day guys! Those are def beercan panfish.

It is hard to tell the difference but line markings and fins are just a bit different. Oneida has both of them .

With the world being the mess it is with a pandemic, rioting and strong swings in the economy, will this change the way you deer hunt? Do you normally only shoot one and now might shoot two or three to stock the freezer? Will you not pass on smaller bucks early? Will you be filling family freezers as well? For the first time in over 10+ years I didn't tag a deer last season. I had opportunities it just didn't pan out. Passed some small bucks and had a couple of misses and a miss fire on a bad round. The year before I had my best year ever in 2018. This last year just wasn't in the cards for some reason. But this year it may be in the back of my mind to not pass on smaller bucks, unless I have filled freezer with a couple of early does. I usually take anything 5 points or above and usually feel I can get a doe or two along the way. But not having a full freezer this last season and all the chaos and who knows when that ends. Meat is always the first priority but this year I feel it is a little more of a priority. And I am banking walleye right now like cordwood . Lol. But deer season is starting to loom in my head and prep to begin soon. How bout you?...

Awesome. Nothing like a new toy! AJs archery in Cazenovia prob isn't too far from you, I've heard good things about them. Heard they have a good selection and will set up bow ready to hunt.

they are just getting wise on your spinners. Youve lipped enough of them that word is out on you fella!
-
got some smallie killers there Jay ! If you have any 2" twister tails feed them onto those spinner baits for added action. Esp the white and Chartruese ones. Or a small rubber craw trailer off the orange. Nice haul. Last year you were all about the lawn, glad you bagged that and took up more fishing! Fish pics are way more interesting than lawn pics. If you do any trout fishing the panther martin deluxe fly in gold 1/32 oz and 1/16 oz is a winner too.

I wish that was the case. This year the weather has been really good so I have gotten out a lot. Hasn't hardly rained in a month. So every weekend I go out usually 5am-9 or so and then still have the full day for the most part. I have taken 5 days off thru May and June and fished all of those mornings too. It helps that I live 200 yards from the lake and can be on the water in like 10 minutes. So usually fish, fish cleaned and back at home by 10 am for a cold one. I actually cancelled 3 days off because of work or bad weather but still have had so many good weather days to fish. I try to get out as much as possible May, June, July when the bite is the best. August comes and I am usually stumped out there and then hunting season and prep looms. Fishing gets really good again in late Sept and October. Then I try to fish off the pier when the conditions are right before hunting early in the morn. Which I can walk to from the house. Hit it right and can get a real quick limit there. Personal best is 16 minutes. -
Deer movement advice on a large clear cut

If it's real thick I would cut trails to funnel them where I want them to go. -

New truck pulls the boat great. The whole 2 miles to the launch. Lol. There is actually one closer like 300 yards but I don't like it as much. -
Pontoons do get blown around in the wind but they aren't bad in moderate chop to drive. It's just sitting you move pretty good. If just going for rides no big deal. Or can anchor and wouldn't have to worry about the wind. But if trying to bass fish a shoreline or something they are just too hard to control even with a troll motor it's tough. If cruising on the lake with some friends and some light fishing they are great. We used to take 14-15 people on one and go to some islands on the St Lawrence and have a clam bake. It was fun. Go with a minimum 75% of the horsepower rating for any boat so your not under powered. Get power tilt and trim as well. Yamaha , Honda, Merc, in that order if have a choice. And they aren't that hard to load unless in real heavy wave and then all boats are tougher to load.

Good day on the water. Got up at 4:30 and a storm was moving in. It passed and hooked on and headed out to the lake. Real slow first troll one hit. Then hooked a real nice one got it within sight and it had another line tangled in it. It came off and my other pole dropped. Got him in. 25fow. Then lost another good one in 21 fow, same thing within site and off. One of those days. Went back thru that area twice and got one keeper and 6 shorts. Two at a time sometimes. Boated 8 lost 2 just couldn't get three keepers. Still a good day. -

Thanks. Almost bought a Ranger and prob would have if they weren't offering so many incentives. Test drove two of them. -
That's awesome. He and you must've been smiling ear to ear. Congrats to you both.

Couldn't pull that limit but still a good day esp when I didn't think I would get out. Waited til after a small storm at 5 this morn. Lost two as big or bigger than my best one within sight and they came off. But a good day fishing anyway.

Now I neeeeed to fill the freezer with fish! And hopefully some venison. Ramen noodles are gonna be a staple otherwise. Prob shouldn't have gotten it but I did. I usually make payments for 5 years and drive it without payments for 5 years. Traded in a year and a half early cause of the incentives. Dunno bout " big pimping" maybe more like rednecking. Lol. -
Smoked chicken and pepper jack quesidilla

You can but for them to come out we'll need to add butter, at least to me it seems. And if doing that might as well deep fry them. Any of those grilled or fried are good, can't lose. But those eyes and perch cook fast and can get overdone easy. Grilled with some lemon slices and some seasoned salt or a little Cajun seasoning in foil is still good, but the deep fryer for those is king for me. I also tried the air fryer and was def disappointed in that.

Bought a new truck today after a lot of trepidation. Hoping to flop a deer or two in the bed this fall. Was gonna wait at least a year and prob get something smaller like I had - another Frontier or a Ranger. But wanted a full size truck and with the incentives available right now can't pass up the chance. -
Walleye and perch are tough to grill. They are a very delicate fish and fall apart easy. But they are good baked as well. Dunno where you've gotten white perch but for me can't beat a yellow. Although I've eaten plenty of white perch and they are also good. And anything from a deep cold lake is usually better. Water temp here is still in the 60s even on the surface. As far as frying that goes for any kind of food. It's better to grill it or bake it then deep fry, not just fish. But no tastier way to have fresh walleye than deep fried.

Very Sorry to hear this. Condolences to you and your family.

Took the day off Friday cause weekend esp sat looking like a washout. Good bunch of fish to fillet. Fishing buddy Corey took them home and had a fresh fish fry. Not a boat limit of eyes but had plenty for a good morning out. -
Looks like some good days on the water. Way to go. Your son can pull in walleyes to Kings! Thanks for posting up those pics.

Def like yellows better. But the whites go in the fryer too Don't tell Biz.... They are more like a rock bass I think.
