  1. Gotta bail for tonite. It's back to pouring here again. So tonite get my stuff ready for weekend and cook a big pot of chili. Gonna be a hunting weekend and Monday too.
  2. cool place to have hunted. Shouldve gotten a hero pic of you with the ocean in the background. Congrats on the deer and a great hunt.
  3. i am so on the fence! want to go after work but its been a soaker here. I can be in the stand by 5 but still considering.......
  4. gotta be getting low on those cube steaks!? time to drop a doe and refill.
  5. $98 is certainly not unreasonable. I always do my own , its just part of it to me and I am very picky on what i do with the meat. If Millers in lowville was a bit closer i would consider going there, but had a couple bad experiences with the local garage shops in the area. Got steaks back with more bone dust than can believe. Which tells me they werent cleaning the game or the equipment very well.
  6. i always liked the muzzle loader opener for North. The big woods and a chance for a bear. But that damn early southern opener now makes me stay at home and hunt ! I know i have a choice but just hard to pass up private land vs public and spots i know well and no travel etc. good luck all!
  7. the corn fields i have to hunt arent very big. Havent seen that cause usaully they are right up against the woodline and deer just exit anywhich way . But after they have been cut have had lots of deer out there the next day in the cut field (back when corn was left) . Now after a cutting not much out there. plus most of our area they cut them at night. Next morn is usually good to be on it.
  8. yup def that smell travels all over. But i used to like those fields for late season hunting . Now i go out there and they are just bare, nothing for them to come back to.
  9. dunno bout you, but it used to be when they cut a field of corn where i hunt there was a ton of corn left in the field. With the new machines these days it looks like a parking lot after.
  10. i actually dont put my cams too close to my stands. I usually put them along some field edges for a couple of months at the end of summer just to get picks of whats in the area. That way when i go to pull them i am not at my stands leaving scent. My stands are setup along areas in between the fields and bedding - or across the other side of the field in an area with more cover. But i have some on the edge of a huge cloverfield and also on a wheat field or a beanfield, next to a cornfield. I have always gotten pics of at least one good buck (good for me at least lol) but this year just a total strikeout. And i am esp surprised by the one place with the large fields. I also hunt another spot that we dont get many summer pics but generally have one or two pics still. Its real brushy and we put cams on the onnly trails avail. That spot always pics up during season and i hope it really picks up this year. this is about the usual pics i get Aug/Sept below
  11. this is the first year that i havent had a single pic of a real decent buck. The two main properties i hunt there is always one real good one and usually another decent one. Best pick i have is a 4, possible 6 point. Last year i had a big 9 at each spot and a smaller 8 at each spot. And that has been the norm for years. These properties are certainly not loaded with big bucks and have never been, but usually have something around to get ya excited. Just seems so different this year. I guess during the rut you never know what is gonna come thru but i am hesitant on waiting as much as i might normally. And it even seems there are less does. Am thinking the neighbors all had a good season last year? I still get the rush of hunting over even getting a doe so dont get me wrong , but its always great to have that feeling that a big boy could step out. Not feeling that this year. Am thinking that if a 5 point comes thru he might be in trouble early this year. I just wont shoot a spike as i would rather just take a doe. and generally pass anything 4 and under. The properties i hunt are def surrounded by other hunters and i dont have enough land with them to bother with trying to grow big bucks, but i do like to let the smaller ones pass and take a doe. And i certainly dont harvest enough bucks myself to be causing the low numbers, as i didnt even fill a buck tag last year. I passed on a decent 7 point last year and a couple of 4s and spikes. Would think there would be more decent bucks around this year, this year def seems different. and the cameras are so empty. might do some card pulls this weekend and see if anything has been thru. But have had them out since Aug 1 and nothing bigger than than a 4 is so outa the usual.
  12. i bet i could have missed them all!! nice shooting thats awesone thats some fine shooting ! always impressed by wing shooters! Im not bad on a deer, thank goodness they dont have wings though!
  13. My hunting buddy is also off Friday and chomping at the bit. I'm gonna be dying a little at work that day. But I am off Sat,sun, mon. Something gonna happen! Good luck Friday. Get the party started!
  14. Sat is supposed to highs in the 40's . This and the harvest thread gonna light up!
  15. i hunted up here in Indian lake for bears and never saw a thing. But this gal hiking up there sure did. Shes tough! https://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Three-bears-and-one-tough-hiker-4847473.php#photo-5242034
  16. We talk a lot about the right or wrong shots and when to take and not to take and how far etc........ but whats the best shot youve ever made while hunting anything with gun or bow? Mine is a bow shot at 31 yards on a buck about 5 -6 years ago. I was in a stand and a buck came out into a field just before dark. He just stood there in the same place and just wouldnt move. I couldnt see his head anymore but saw antlers when he walked out. But I had a full picture of his body in the kill zone. I was looking through the crotch of a tree half way between us and I kept watching as he stood there and i then thought - i can make that shot! So i drew back and lined up between the crotch of the tree and shot- yup hit him and he took off running with arrow but he turned so i couldnt see for sure where it hit. It was like 5 minutes of legal light. So i sat for 1/2 hour then got down to check the spot quick. When I did i heard a crash in the woods. So i backed out til morning. Came back the next morn and went in where i heard the crash. but no deer and no blood. Kept looking and like 50 yards away found a solid blood trail for about 25 yards and it ended. And didnt know which way the deer was headed for a direction. So i started doing semi circles and couldnt find a thing. on one of the circles i ended up back on the edge of the same field and i look out and at 25 yards is two bucks - one a nice 8 point. I was tempted as they couldnt see me in the brush but def knew something was there. I grunted and they came closer. but of course already tracking a deer and a buck at that. So they got wary and took off. I looked for another hour and a half and just couldnt believe i couldnt find it. So i went up on a ridge that was above everything and there was a white belly down in the gully of a creekbed. And i had walked buy there twice already prob as close as 20 yards and never saw it. Arrow was still in it sticking almost straight up but not out the other side. Hit high lung and it prob died just a short while after i shot it, but was surprised the arrow didnt pass through. this is the stand and can see the spot i shot through the little tree to the right behind the stand. Deer was prob about 150 yards from there down in a deep creek bottom right up against a bed of stones. I made a heart shot on a doe as well last year but the one thru the tree had to be the best. And I am one to pass a lot of times but for some reason I was confident i could make that shot.
  17. i shouldve been on the troll on Monday instead of deer hunting - but this time of year i always end up saying that!
  18. Pedro in the pregame is unwatchable
  19. Yanks need CC from 2007 to appear and Angel Hernandez to have a few more pregame shots to make those great calls again.
  20. nice job outa you! Meat and a good story
