  1. A friend of mine carries a Sig 938, which bears some similarities to a compact 1911. He previously carried an officer 's 1911. Something you might want to consider. Also, EAA has a polymer frame 1911, that you can research reviews, etc. Good luck. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  2. Haven't taken the slug gun out in at least a decade. But still can bow hunt in January. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  3. Only saw turkeys today. Had one roost nearby. A little tough to make out in the photo. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  4. Last hour of what is likely my last hunt of the year. Lots of guys out in 1c today. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  5. Lots of good info provided by others. I will echo a few and add my perspective. Post-season scouting is great for getting to know the lay of the land, and at this time of year there are fewer ticks and you might even find a shed antler. Post-season scouting info on deer movement may or may not be useful for early season, as movements tend to change with food sources hunter pressure, etc. Look for and make a mental note of where other hunters have set up tree stands, such as marks from use of climbers, trimmed branches, etc. It at least gives you an idea of what other hunters thought were good places to hang a stand, for whatever that might be worth. For early season, I use most recent info, by low impact scouting - looking for fresh sign, early season food sources, like a white oak loaded with acorns, etc. Many scoff at the idea of scouting just days before the opener, due to disturbing deer, but it has helped rather than hinder my opportunities. Your results may differ. Put in as much time as you can, but don't burn yourself or your best stand sites out. Try to keep hunting in perspective and I think you will get as much enjoyment out of it as the time you put in. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  6. Trying a spot on state land 1c that i haven't hunted in years. Feels like October weather with wind in the teens. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  7. You weren't the only one. Could have used some of this nice weather last month. Tried a public land spot I hadn't hunted in a few years, but that gets hunted pretty hard. Saw 1 doe. Closest it came was 60-70 yds. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  8. Lots of deer sign, but no deer sighted while on stand today. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  9. Back out on County land in 1c. 40 deg WNW wind at 9 mph. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  10. No deer sightings today, but a beautiful fall-like day. Now off to hang out with the grandkids. Life is good. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  11. Checking in from County land in 1c. Sunny 40 deg. W wind 8 mph. Beautiful day. Was going to work on the truck, but the woods were calling me. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  12. Still have a month of open season here in 1c. This season has been average or better than average in some respects from my perspective as a public land bowhunter. Highlights: Saw deer most sits (a bit better than my 50-50 avg.) Doe pee worked better this year than in past years. I rarely hunt from the ground, but had a decent buck encounter from a makeshift ground blind - that was a first. Got a small 7 pt 10/8, and it is tasty. I have a month left in the season. Lowlights: Hunted less due to rain and a wicked cold/cough that was tough to shake. The shot on the buck was a bit high and back (even though it was a quick kill and short recovery, I am thankful, but not happy). Drawing the bow when it is cold is getting difficult, so may have to lower the poundage....again. It sucks getting old. Enjoyed this forum and hope to post a bit more before my season ends. 13. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and that it was nothing more than dehydration. Take it easy. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk

    First buck

My first buck was taken on state land just east of Brookhaven National Labs on opening day 2003. I had seen a bachelor group the previous Sunday while low impact scouting, and that made the decision of where to hunt for me. Made a plan to hunt that spot with a buddy from work. To secure that spot i got there early....too early it turned out, as i got a parking ticket from the encon. Officer. My hunting buddy was late and he packed it in around 11. I hunted the entire day. About 30 minutes before sunset the bachelor gropu came through. Had no shot at the biggest buck, but fortunately the smalkest buck a 4 point walked into a open lane at 15 yards and I took the shot. I spined it and it dropped in its tracks. A follow up shot sealed the deal. I remember it like it was yesterday. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  15. Huntic public lan in 1c. Just had 8 does and fawn come running in. I kept looking for the buck chasing, but did not see one. They got to 50 yds downwind, stood for a while then turned away and left. A minute or so later I heard a couple ATVs, so I believe the ATV's pushed them. Made for a few minutes of excitement anyway. 16. Congrats Phillyfan. The first archery harvest is like a natural high...at least it was for me. Enjoy! First of many I hope. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  17. @juthunter glad you made it home. Sorry aboutthe injuries. Close call. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  18. Thanks for sharing that heartfelt story. My sympathy and best wishes to you and your family at this time. God bless. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  19. Congrats ADK! Great buck and impressive shot at 40 yds. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  20. Out i 1c for a late afternoon sit. So far 1 doe passed by at about 50 yds. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  21. I been using the archer's choice by Nikon with angle compensation for the past 9 or 10 years. Not sure if they still make it, but i haven't had any problems with it. You may get false readings if there is stuff in the foreground, but it works for me and fits easily in a pocket. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk

  23. Almost got it done from a brush blind. Still shaking. Mature 9 pt.needed to take 1 more step. Held draw for an age during a 20 yd stare down. Only a neck shot and would have had to slip arrow between 2 trees. Never going to take that shot. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  24. I use a commercially made scent drag, but i would think that anything absorbent and reasonably scent free should work. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
