  1. I think you are doing the right thing waiting. You've made great choices every step of the way. Your patience will be rewarded. That's a dead deer imo and likely did not go far. Good luck, hang in there. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  2. Live from the couch, watching Premier league soccer. Got 2 texts from my buddy who is in GA with rifle. Cull buck and nice 8 down so far. Wish the weather would cooperate up here. Maybe tomorrow. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  3. That's a dandy. Look forward to reading the story in the harvest thread. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  4. I would suggest hunting closest stand to the camera you saw him on recently and as long as you can. While deer patterns vary at this time of year, i have had success with using the most recent info. To determine sramd location and even if not in range, you may be able to grunt him in. Good luck! 5. Is mandatory blaze orange for firearms a bad thing? How about extended hours for archery only, if wearing blaze while firearm hunting is too much to ask? Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  6. Are there statistics for accidental shootings etc in states where it is legal to hunt 30 mins after sunset. NYDEC seems to base the regs on safety at least according to the DEC folks I spoke to some time ago. My guess is no hunting after sunset is feel good reg. that adresses a non-issue from a safety standpoint and that statistics from states with more generous shooting times would suggest that hunting in those states is not more dangerous than in NY (for humans or non-game species). But that's just my guess, with no stats whatsoever to back that up. Flame-on. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  7. The deer was taken in 1c, on County land in Yaphank. We basically met and chatted at the parking spot and discussed where each of us would be hunting so as not to crowd each other. He favored an open area closeby and I tend to hunt a bit further in where ther is more cover. We would hunt only about 200 yards apart. After the hunt, I told him about the doe and fawn I saw. He told me about the deer he'd seen with the "yellow antlers" and he encouraged me to hunt that area the following day as he would not be hunting. The following afternoon, I was back in the same area, but set up closer to where he described seeing the deerbut still in cover that I prefer. The deer showed up and responded to the grunt call and the rest is history. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  8. I hunt public land almost exclusively and for the first 15-20 years I was very cagey about sharing info with other hunters. Now, not so much. Seeing a discussion on the live from the woods thread about Phade's posting of deer pics made me think of my thought evolution. Two experiences with generous strangers I encountered on public land hunts helping to put me on deer, led to two of my best hunting experiences, including my best buck. Now I am more inclined to be open about what and where I have seen deer with folks who are putting in the effort. Kind of like following the example set by those 2 guys I had only met briefly. Here' s a photo of my best buck. I will be forever grateful for the elderly gent who set me up for success. How has your thinking evolved?...or has it? Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  9. Is texting and keeping up with social media or even just technology helping or hurting the hunt? By that I mean both the experience of being in the woods and in pursuit of game and the actual taking of the game. For example, on opening day I was triple checking the distance of a tree when i failed to notice a spike sneak up behind me. Now i admit that tree had not moved and was still 22 yards away, but I am kind of anal retentive that way. Fact is I've been busy texting and had deer sneak up on me. But sharing has become part of the hunting experience for me. What are your thoughts? Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  10. I try to take advantage of cover. Usually hang stand 12-14 feet when leaves are on the trees and use climber to 16-20 feet or higher, when leaves have fallen. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  11. Nicely done. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  12. I hunt public land where there is not that good a chance of hunting the same spot due to hunter competition. 2 yrs ago i tried mock scrapes near what appeared to be natural scrapes. One time it got some attention from a young buck that i ended up taking....Not at the scrape but closeby at a scent wick. Probably just lucky that day. 80% of the time my attempts at scents and lures do not work or even put does off a bit. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  13. Go to the dec website. There is an on line access permit that you fill out and print both a parking permit and an access permit. During October that gives you access to all DEC owned or managed lands for archery. Maps can be downloaded or printed from the website. Come November 1, you can archery hunt the spots south of the LIE. Spots north of the LIE require reservations. If you are a Suffolk resident you can access County land by a separate permit. If you live in East Hampton, or Riverhead you have additional town lands that are permitted. That's a brief intro., but really the info is on the DEC website and you can call thrm with questions. But hope this is helpful. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  14. Finally got one down. 20 yard broadside shot. Hit was a bit high and back and no exit, so no blood. Found the deer after a 90 minute grid search only 100 yards from my stand. As photo shows, it was dark by the time I got him. Small 7 pointer. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  15. I like hunting stories with a happy ending. I must be quite a relief! I get that self- doubt everytime the animal doesn't fall withing sight or sound. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  16. Hunting 1C. Saw 1 adult doe at 40 yds and 1 small doe at about 35 yds. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  17. I treat outer and under layers. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  18. My first bow harvest was a 60 lb wild boar in FL. It was delicious. I would suggest small is better when it comes to wild pigs. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  19. I will be out, probably just the afternoon. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  20. Haven't done any scouting this year to see deer. But in years past i have seen batchelor groups into early October. That's on Long Island. Might be different elsewhere. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  21. My GPS , satellite monitor and telemetric game camera is showing 8 large cervids bedded near the north pole. Sent from my SM-G925V using Tapatalk
  22. Just read an article in deer and deer hunting from January 15, 2017 on antlered does. Could not figure out how to link to it. Paraphrasing, the article says the odds of an antlered doe is around 1:1,000. Not directly related to odds of a velvet buck, but found it interesting. I have only seen/found 1 antlered doe, and it had been dead a couple days at least when I found it.
