  1. My large upright freezer give up a couple weeks ago. It was purchased new in 1983 . Lost about 10 lbs of venison, ( it was beyond the jerky stage). Now, will be in the market for a new one. You have me thinking. Is the failure rate of an upright less than for a chest freezer?
  2. I think it depends on what part of hunting season, weather conditions, and hunting pressures, on where to set up at . We will not limit ourselves but, try to make an educated guess on where to sit through the 9 week season. . The deers habits change quite alot in that time period. Just knowing the different phases of the breeding season has raised our success rate.
  3. The Fitzgeralds are very good . They are top notch bowhunters. Their form of hunting is more realistic to how it really happens in the woods. Have alot of their viewings. Missed a seminar a few years ago, as tickets sold out rapidly. People that were lucky enough to go, said it is was great.
  4. What are your views on hunting videos? Are they worth the money? Deer and turkey videos are my favorite. I like the Drury productions. Dream Season, Whitetail Madness, Wild & Fair Chase , and Longbeard Madness. Own'em all. Second best, Monster Bucks. I would like to see more productions from New York. The big names don't bother much. We have some of the best deer and turkey hunting in the country. This would also promote more management practices along with helping state revenues.
  5. I would say it's up to the conservation officer who seen you doing it. He would go by the law, and that seems to be a very fine line. In this day in age, I think a ticket would be in order. Deer will eat standing corn right into February of the next year. If the corn is on the ground, and you get normal winter weather conditions, the corn will mold in a short period , and not be worth as much to wildlife. I have grown corn for many years. If their is enough , it stays in pretty good shape right in May to be picked. Otherwise, every creature out there will consume it. Leave your corn standing, the deer will come in more, and it's alot more challenging shot come the chance.
  6. Have you had any complaints with the Cuddieback camera? I know in talking to few people and some or the reviews on the major hunting stores, they work good for a season or two and then stop working.
  7. Maybe the flash is the secret in the clear picture. We started with flash, but went over to IR cameras, because we felt the deer were spooked by the flash. We were also afraid of theft because, the flash is so easy to see. I do like the sharpness of those pictures.
  8. Wow, that gun is so nice, I wouldn't want to take it out and get it dirty, but I'm thinking anyways about it.
  9. Bushnell has made huge advances in a few years. This industry is sure growing fast. I remember the old 35mm cameras in the boxes, not to many years ago. I can't believe the quality you get in some of the pictures. What is next on the horizon?
  10. The quality of those pictures are really nice. What brand of camera are you using?
  11. The problem is these people vote, and the politicians listen to them if they make up a majority. That is how some of these wackey laws get through. We as bowhunters, gun hunters, and just plain lovers of nature have to stand tall and stay united. Keep informed, and thank you to the people who created Hunting New York forum, and sites like this one , so we may continue our rights to do what we have done in the past, and for our children in the future.
  12. That is alot of work with a hand tiller. Can understand why you were shaky. That is where a nice compact tractor with a rear tine tiller comes in handy. Those spots look like that wouldn't be possible to get to with such a rig. It will be well worth it, when the green is showing with the deer right along with it. The progress will be interesting to follow. Hope mother nature is on your side.
  13. I usually plant about 3 acres. Just starting to be able to walk across the ground. Like to get them in during May, but not this year, to wet. Last year, I got them in early and all came up very nice. In a few days, all that were showing were stems. Think every deer for miles around came in and cleaned them off. They did grow new leaves, but never made alot of beans. I worked up part, and put it into wheat in September. You should see the heads on that wheat, from the nitrogen fixed into the soil from the beans. Maybe 3 inches long, There is ample clover and alfalfa in my fields, but they know when the beans are up .I'll be putting in acres of alfalfa some time before August 15th, but don't know about beans this year.
  14. Thanks for showing those pictures. Now I got that itchy feeling. Only 131 days from tomorrow. Getting late, got to get those tree stands up. Oh no, bow needs tuning up, and the bow shop packed. lol
  15. New York Hunting & Trapping 2010-2011 official guide to laws & regulations, page 18 under hunting definitions- Motor Vehicle- means every vehicle or device operated by any power other than muscle power including, but not limited to automobiles, trucks, motorcycles ,tractors, trailers, motorboats, snowmobiles, and all-terrain vehicles whether operated on or off pubic highways. The law is pretty clear to me. no hunting off trailers. What about bicycles, and wheelbarrows? Muscle power.
  16. Been seeing live fawns while turkey hunter, checking my field crops, and on the tractor. Have not found any parts or pieces like above. Usually, seeing sets of twins is very common by now. This year, I have yet to see any twins, all singles. Few fawns are nice size already, but have also seen some later drops. What is everyone else seeing? Any differences from other years?
  17. I bought Herters Fowl-Tech rain wear back for the 2008 turkey season. Just completed 2011 turkey season,( wetest on record) and the jacket and pants are in great shape yet. I use it almost every day during bow season for deer, even though it's not raining. Bought a larger size to go over other clothing. It's really a great product for the money. It stays waterproof. I paid 40 bucks for the jacket and 35 for the pants back then. Just looked them up in Cabela's and they run 75 for the jacket, 70 for the pants. Boy, have things gone up. Should have bought 2 sets for a later date. The only complaint I have is never getting enough pockets for all my stuff. My son says to get a backpack. Dad likes pockets with good zippers. Call me old fashion.
  18. Seemed like every time I went out, the ditch in front of me had 3 feet of water in it. Sitting in the blind looking at my 14 inch tall boots, wet feet were going to be the outcome, if a gobbler came in. Would be well worth it . Never remember such a wet May. Over 7 inches in the rain guage
  19. What a nice bird to start out with. Congrats on the success. Late birds are just as good eating as early ones.
  20. That turkey would make anyone sit up and notice. He's one big Tommy.
  21. I totally agree with you. Finding what the turkeys want to hear is the key to success. This year however, they seem to be coming in more silent then usual. Maybe because it's getting late in the year. Had one jake present himself this past Saturday, but passed on him. Come in without a peep. He'll be a nice gobbler come next year. Sunday was deer day. Monday was two nice hens very early. No gobbler with them. Seemed very lonely just wanting to make a friend with the decoys. One more day left, maybe the best for last? Good luck to all that all still out in the woods.
  22. May is going by, so fast. It has been the best year for me, thus far. Have had more action in the last few days, than I've had all season. The birds come into the call but, just can't get them in those last few yards needed for a good shot. The excitement grows however, with each encounter. Don't know if I'll ever harvest a bird, someday maybe. Just being out with the wildlife is a great rush and can't wait for this weekend.
