Don't want to relive what happen a few years back. Started snowing Thursday night before bow opened Saturday, we got 22" of wet snow. Thunder and lightning, and pounding snow. They called it the" October Surprise" . With the leaves still on the trees, all the weak limbs came down. What a mess. Limbs stripped on every tree in the area. Even the oaks took a hit. No power for 12 days.Took 2 hours to get to our 20 minute spot. Nothing moved, and I don't know how we would have got a deer out anyways. Top it all off, a few miles north, never got anything.

The muck runs southwest from Clarendon to a little north of Oakfield. Vegetables were grown in the natural humas there years ago, but today, it's alot of corn and soybeans. It's all private owned and alot of people hunt it. The Alabama swamps is full of deer; WMU 8G. My son ( with help) pulled a big doe out last year weighing 140#.

Their's some big deer harvested out of the muck land over your way.

Seems like Jefferson has good numbers in buck harvest/town. 3157 buck total, last years est.. Do the does with young ones chase the bucks out? Maybe the cameras aren't in the right spots.

Still think it's a great idea. Don't see where a steel bath tub can hurt a thing. Use to sink a cast iron tube in the geese and duck pen when I had them. They had a ball in it. We have a pond on the farm so, we're lucky. It's spring fed and keeps fairly clean. This time of the year, it's full of tracks, including deer. Nice place to set a cam as you showed. We have had 3" of rain in the last week, and the big ditch is starting to fill with water. Looks like it could be boot city for bow if it keeps up. Could it be a repeat of last May ahead?

Corn seems to do as well broadcasting on, as planting in rows. Some hunters out west planted milo this year because their corn was stunted, due to the drought. It seem to do well in droughty conditions. Deer are eating it, even though their not use to seeing it. Seems like something to try next year.

Here are some oats I planted on the last day of August. First time experiment planting oats in the Fall, Protein 14 %. About 5 " tall now. Deer have found them and are hammering away. Still eating alfalfa, trefoil, clover, and grapes

Grow, I know you plant it for the birds, but do the deer bother with the sorghum right now, and what about when it turns brown? Might try some next year.

A farmer friend told me that local raised corn won't grow, because of being dried down to 12% moisture, that kills the germ . The TS store gets their corn from the midwest where is doesn't need drying, thus it will grow. It's also a hybrid so, you take your chances. Grow proved how well it will do.

Thats a great idea. Helping the wildlife out during stressful times, not to mention going green and recycling.

What I thought to be 3 black bears running straight at my stand, 3 little arrows in my quiver, and thinking it was all over for me; I had bought the farm. Turned out to be a neighbors loose black angus cows. ( It was a little foggy) Always bring your glasses! Not to mention, I had to quit a little earlier that evening.

If you go on "Turkey Harvest" on the bottom of that page, go to Turkey Management link. It explains in detail about each part of the state. It's nice to see good numbers in your part of the state. Our NW part of the state just doesn't have good numbers of turkey, and the harvest data supports that. The season starts here on the second week of bow season, and most of the archers, I know, get turkey tags. I won't harvest a hen or jakes , figuring the numbers might rise. About 50% of those archers will take a turkey, like wise with deer, given the chance.The DEC should close fall hen harvest here, to get numbers up. With the Spring we had this year, those numbers will. no doubt, fall more.

I've been thinking of using them , but understand their hard on a Whisker Biscuit's life.

I would say most of the WMU's were well represented. To me, it looks like the trend is growing towards larger racks in N.Y.S.. At least the ones I saw. Maybe attending the BBC awards, just makes it seem that way, don't know ? I'm sure Joe knows the answer. They say a picture holds a thousand words, well their are millions in that "Record Book." Really pumps up the old blood, a month to the day, when bow starts!

There were also black bears there. Those full mounts sure looked real and were nicely done. The bears rugs were great. We don't get a chance to get that close to many bears on the west side of the state. I try to post some pictures today.

These are not just blinds, their mega blinds. They all look great. What happen to the olde'n days when you went out and sat on a log?

Just returned home from the 2011 awards banquet. First of all, I would like to thank everyone that makes this possible. It must be a huge undertaking to plan and put on such an event. Thank you. The awards presentation was great. It most enjoyable to hear all the humor, and the stories, oh the stories, they were great. The MC did a wonderful job also. Now the trophys, oh those trophys. Never have I seen that amount in one building before. Alot of big deer harvested in 2009, 2010. Everyone was great. Now if you don't have the 16th edition of the Whitetail Record Book, get yourself one. It is the best by far. Beautiful color photos, and tons of stats.

In past years of fall turkey hunting, I've seen plenty of hens and a jake or two, but never a gobbler. They seem to start hanging out on the farm, late October, about the time the woodcocks roll in,and stay to about Thanksgiving. Their in the chickory and clover then and hang out in the back thickets alot. Don't know where the gobblers are?
