Can we all agree that , all things being equal , that a faster bow is more forgiving of yardage judgement mistakes?

I am just stating my experience. Maybe it is different for others. Shooting a target in my yard at known distances is fairly easy. Judging distance is one of the harder things to master in archery. What I am saying is that if a person limits himself/herself to 30 yds or less a faster bow takes all the guess work out . You can sight in your bow to be a few inches high at 20 and it will be a few inches low at 30. I do not need to know where 10,20 yds is.Picture shooting down a 6"pipe to your kill zone.Much like one does zeroing a rifle at 150 yds .

Correct.... There is no better tool to improve ones abilities than practice. 2-5 fps will not make a discernible difference in trajectory 20 -30fps will. I do not know about others. But I am far from perfect, esp under the pressure of a buck popping out of the brush ~30 yds away. I know under my set-up (that I practice with a lot)that a miss judgement of a few yards either way will not result in a missed deer. It is a win win.If my setup was finicky and inaccurate I would change my tune.Like I said before I cannot shoot a perfect 300 yet but I do not believe it is the bows fault it is all about practice.

All good points,Bill. If I could not shoot my bow accurately I would definitely be looking for a more forgiving set-up. I know ,at least in my experience , many of the newer bow are shooting a lot faster and just as accurate as the bows they are replacing. I have debated weather to go with a heavier arrow , but at least on deer size game I have only ever had 2 arrows not blast through. One was in the spine from a really sharp treestand shot.Another was a double shoulder hit. The later one was last year on my ten point .The arrow blasted through 1st shoulder blade and barely stuck through the opposite shoulder blade at 30 yds. I agree on the poundage also,I can pull 80#+ but it is not any fun. I prefer to hunt with 65#. I can sit on my arse on the ground and pull back slow in close quarters.
  6. Crowds? Lol.. I guess I am pretty luck, I have never seen another person when I go opening day. Of course where I go ,the fish aren't biting very good yet on opening day, The water is still to cold. But yes ...I cannot wait.

I have had good luck with my Vapor trail ProV dopaway rest..Very easy to set up and has containment. Is it any more accurate or better than a Wb? I cannot shoot well enough to tell. This winter , my 5 spot average is hovering around 290...One of my friends still shoots a wb and his is around 290+. He always seems to shoot just that much better, dam him..lol. I just had try one of these newfangled rests and see what all the hype was about. As long as you have good follow through (not grabbing or torquing the grip during the shot) Most people would be well served with a wb. As far as the faster vs slower bow debate goes. Imo a faster bow is a little more forgiving ,at longer hunting distances , of yardage judgements. With my old slow bow a guess of 35 yds when the deer was actually at 38 resulted in a clean miss. with my new bow ~ 40+fps faster It would result in a dead deer. I only hunt with 1 pin. With my old bow I had a maximum of 31 paces that I could aim at the center of kill zone and kill the deer. With the faster bow I now have a maximum distance of 38 paces. Steps ,not yards,I have short legs....So is the faster bow more accurate?? No..But it is easier to hit a given target at longer range.
  8. Yes, and it just seems much more satisfying to shoot a group.
  9. No robinhoods in a while but..A friend and I were doing a little shooting this am: at the local shop. He was goofing off and shot at one of my arrows in my target unluckily for him it was a hanger .2 arrows later I broke it . In the past , hangers were fair game ,lol. have not done that in a while. I felt guilty after and paid for his range time.
  10. Come on ..First of all I happen to agree with may of your posts. I already said the safety issue is not there(poor reason to deny crossbows) All I meant ,is to say you can accidently shoot youself in the foot or the leg or set the xbow down and accidently discharge it, etc..The list of really stupid ways( and highly unlikely ways)one could hurt themselves with a crossbow could go on and on . Go ahead and try to end this stupid discussion and shoot yourself in the head with a compound..........Oh you are still here... I thought so.I do not need a chart or statistic to tell me this (common sense). A ridiculous discussion we are having. I happen to like archery season the way it is and have yet to be shown why a xbow season between archery and ml is not a viable compromise. Either way it will not be the end of my world.
  11. Yeap , because everybody is going to slowly switch over to the pistol because it is a superior weapon, if it is left in gun season.
  12. It is funny how 2 sides of a debate are so solid in their convictions.Step back and listen or comprehend what the others saying. As I have said before, imo crossbows need their own season after archery. Any one with any comman sense would have to agree that crossbows are more dangerous than a compound. You simply cannot do things with a bow that you can with a xbow. Is it a good arguement against crossbows, I don't think so. Accidents are statisticaly insignificant. Those against a separate season for xbow...What reason would there be to not do this? What would be the harm?( have to wait an additional week or so to hunt?) Like I have said before I think xbows are nice weapons and will probably hunt with one eventually, after I have hunted with my bow.And I will repeat ,after seeing the affects that have happened already, due to our shortsightedness(compounds, modern inlines) we should think about future generations of hunters. Why cannot we have our cake and eat it too? A xbow season will draw in new hunters and allow others with bad shouldeers etc... get in the woods while it is still quiet. Yet still leave a few weeks for our modern age "traditionalists"(lol) This debate reminds me of our political mess D vs R ..Idiots on both sides (in the political arena) with no intention of meeting in the middle. All or nothing. In the long haul everybody loses.

Yes he was...This is the view that morning on the way to my stand.
  15. Yes, I have been shooting spots at the local bow shop, and he is getting more and more crossbows in. Gotta admit they are pretty cool and look like fun.I will have one also, to play eventually.
  16. All good points..Although I feel that we can accomplish both. I am guilty of this myself..When the next season with a superior weapon opens I am all over it.By that time, I am tired of watching deer at 40+ yards walk by. My game has not quite risen to the level where i can feel confident in harvesting a deer with my bow when I have a more efficient choice. On the other hand I am normaly dead set against the government mandating my choices even for my own benefit.Like everything else there is no perfect anwser.
  17. No cloudy judgement here.lol. I am quite aware of how and why the state divides the season...I was just trying to make a point( maybe poorly done).I am glad you are confident that Xbows will not take over archery season.I am not.(give it time) Yes, I talked to some state people the other day and they said I could schedule my vacatation this fall around an oct 1st date with 99% certainty.

Funny ,after looking at the picture I had to go back down stairs and make sure I counted points right .lol. I did , they just do not show at that angle.

Thanks guys. Yes he is a letchworth buck. I have shot a few nice bucks in the north country but never anything bigger than a 6 point with my bow.

I just got him back from the taxidermist. Not a monster but my biggest bow buck by far.He and I had a staring contest for an hour...I won....
  21. Sorry for the tangent,Obviously I do not agree but back to the regular scheduled program.
  22. Yeap .... That is what I have been hearing also.
  23. True....But on that note why do we not start hunting season oct 1st. We can hunt with any weapon of our choice... How many people are not going to carry a gun? Besides the fact fact that the state wants more $ for each season why divide the season up? New hunters ,young hunters just learning our sport are goin to miss out on more tradional hunting methods.... I know I am kinda laying it on thick... but imo this is where our sport is headed like it , or not. I started hunting with a rifle for the 1st few years..Someone said I could start hunting 2 weeks earlier so I took up archery..If not for that I probably would not have ever started my favorite method to hunt deer. I can read the writing on the wall. it is just a matter of time and crossbows will be in archery season...Maybe my kid or her kids will at least take my old bow off the wall and shoot a target or maybe a deer with it. lol.
