  1. A 90-100"+ deer is a trophy , and pretty hard to come by in many areas of the state. Most hunters hunt many hours before getting the opportunity to shoot something that big. I have seen the results of AR and 90-100"s is the average buck sighted not the once every ten year opportunity.
  2. Talking about no legs. A " friend" shot a doe a couple of weeks ago that had one front leg shot off at the knee and the other was broken. She was stall navigating but not very well, poor girl.
  3. Have any of you AR haters hunted in an established AR zone ? I have only hunted one AR area and the sighting of 2 1/2 years old bucks is up. It would seem to me, except for the 1st year ,maybe 2 where everyone will have to pass up some small bucks that the odds of shooting a buck are just as good. It is just more likely to be a nicer buck. This year alone I passed on 4 smaller bucks, spotted 3 other larger bucks (out of range of coarse), and shot a nice 10 point. Maybe other AR areas are not this good?
  4. How about 2 buck rule. 1st one, anything goes. 2nd one use AR? A compromise .

Ho-ho-ho... True.. Maybe I will get something new for next season.Lol.
  7. Is that the brutally sharp thorned bush found in the woods down there? I come across some while hunting 8m .I have never seen anything like it in 6a where I live. It makes berry briars seem gentle.
  8. How the heck did I get brought into this totally unrelated topic with my previous post 7j? It is a fact that , in my area and many others, deer #s are down significantly compared to 10 years ago. I cannot speak on yours or others specific hunting areas. I have no idea about the 50s-60s .I have only been deer hunting for 20 years. Back on topic. Imo , If you are in the wood on a big chunk of state land ,for example, and unknowingly wander off into a private piece that is unposted and meets all the other guidelines then you are not trespassing . To park beside the road and just walk onto a property even if it is not posted should be classified as trespassing. But the law works in strange ways sometimes.
  9. Years ago ,some friends and I were hunting one of our properties. On the way out, from our morning hunt, we heard a gunshot.Obviously in one of our meadows. Sure enough there was a dead doe laying in the field. No one on the way to claim it. We debated what to do and decided to lay it over a round bale and see if they returned and got it.To there benefit, when we returned for the night hunt. the deer was gone .
  10. On one hand, I do not agree with or like to see anybody hunting from a vehicle. On the other hand , what is the old guy hurting.I am sure if he got a deer he would either get it himself of call a nonjudgmental friend or family member to help him out. I would assume it is not a highly populated area and on his own land or land that he has permission to hunt. If he can be successful ,good for him. I am sure that all of us never drive over 55 or would not even dream of shooting that buck standing 50 yds away at 4:35 when sunset was at 4:34.
  11. Yes, This year I found 3 dead deer while archery hunting in the newly opened archery zone in Letchworth.
  12. "unless it is unimproved, apparently unused and unfenced" I would be willing to bet this is meant for the big woods where one could easily wander onto neighboring pieces without knowing it.Either way ignorance only works the 1st time .Most well settled parts of the state have an old fence line or hedge....something indicating a property line.
  13. Yeap..You are right! Brain far on my part..lol
  14. Gee wiz. ..Some of you guys are just mean.
  15. I have never hunted any where else in the county, but Letchworth sp . The park seems to have a real good buck to doe ratio imo. The deer numbers are down quite a bit, but with a little effort, there are some nice bucks to be found.
  16. Wow that's a monster.Years ago I shot a 5 point doe with horns still had velvet on her horns. Interestingly enough ,after talking to the neighbors , I discovered that she was seen in the fields over the summer with fawns.

    hunt

Yeah ... This sucks rifle season just ended today .2 + months of hunting should be enough right? Well that is what my woman says..I can never seem to get enough .I know that big one must be hiding in that swamp I did not hunt enough. One more weekend with the muzzleloader then it is the long wait until next year.
  18. Looks pretty comfy..Not my cup of tea , but I do not see anything wrong with it. .........I have been out on more than a few cold rainy days where a blind/camp would be nice..lol
  19. Nice response .I would have to disagree with much of what you have to say. I am sure there are many areas that have a healthy and well balanced deer herd .I am just as sure there are as many or more that do not..Thanks to a previous link we can see in black and white that over-all our deer take has declined ~20- 33 %on average over the past 10 years . Now if what you say holds true in some areas ,then in other areas the hunting must be downright terrible. A truly good hunter patterns other hunters as well as deer year round. This is what I do. Lol I live in the middle of some great farm land.If they are not in that alfalfa they are in the next one or the cornfield after that, ets.... Today I walked through one of my old haunts in the hills .The furthest landing is 3.5 miles in.I crossed 2 deer tracks .And yes during my still hunt right through the middle of their home the deer sign is way down.
